Gurdwara Qilla Lohgarh Sahib near Anandpur Sahib marks the site of one of five defensive forts built by Guru Gobind Singh during his 25-year residence at Anandpur Sahib. Lohgarh ('Iron Fort') was the second strongest fortification and housed the Guru's weapons manufacturing facility. It was here that Bhai Bachittar Singh famously turned back a war elephant sent by the hill chiefs to batter the fort's gates during the siege of 1700, striking the beast with a nagani spear. The fort was never captured by force and only fell after the Sikhs voluntarily evacuated Anandpur in December 1705.
