About

Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, one of the most prominent Sikh shrines in Delhi, was originally the bungalow of Raja Jai Singh of Amber where the eighth Guru, Guru Harkrishan, stayed after being summoned to Delhi by Emperor Aurangzeb in 1664. During a devastating epidemic of cholera and smallpox, the young Guru selflessly tended to the sick and distributed medicines, food, and clothing to the poor, earning the title Bala Pir (Child Prophet) from the local Muslim community. He contracted smallpox himself and passed away at age five; the sacred pool built over the original well is revered for its healing waters, and the shrine was first constructed by Baghel Singh in 1783.
