Langar — The Guru's Kitchen
A sacred tradition of community kitchen, where everyone sits together as equals and shares a free meal regardless of caste, creed, colour, or social status.
What is Langar?
Langar was started by Guru Nanak Dev Ji over 500 years ago as a revolutionary practice of equality. In every Gurdwara around the world, volunteers prepare and serve vegetarian meals to all visitors, free of charge. The tradition embodies the Sikh principles of seva (selfless service), equality, and sharing.
Free for Everyone
Langar is always free. No one is turned away, regardless of background or faith.
Sit Together as Equals
Everyone sits on the floor in rows (pangat), dissolving all distinctions of wealth and status.
Vegetarian Meals
Langar is always vegetarian, ensuring everyone can eat together without dietary restrictions.
Worldwide Tradition
Gurdwaras across the globe serve langar daily, feeding millions of people every day.

Visiting a Gurdwara for Langar
Before You Arrive
Gurdwaras are open to everyone. No appointment is needed. Langar is typically served after the main prayer service, but many large Gurdwaras serve food throughout the day. It is customary to cover your head with a scarf or bandana — head coverings are available at the entrance if you don't have one.
At the Gurdwara
Remove your shoes at the entrance (shoe racks are provided). Wash your hands before entering the Langar Hall (dining area). You will sit on the floor in rows (pangat) with everyone else. Volunteers will serve you — the meal is always vegetarian and includes roti (flatbread), dal (lentils), sabzi (vegetables), and rice or kheer (dessert).
Want to Help?
Volunteering in the Langar kitchen or helping serve food (seva) is welcomed and encouraged. It is one of the most meaningful ways to participate in Gurdwara life. Speak with anyone at the Gurdwara — the community is always happy to include newcomers.
