Gurdwaras in Toronto and Brampton: a complete guide

The Greater Toronto Area is home to one of the largest Sikh communities outside of Punjab. Per the most recent Statistics Canada census, Sikhs make up a substantial share of the population in Brampton specifically, which has the highest concentration of Sikh-Canadians in the country.

This guide covers active gurdwaras across Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, and the surrounding GTA. Use it to find a gurdwara near where you are, whether you're a long-time resident, a recent arrival, or visiting family for a weekend.

Editor's note before publishing: Replace each [verified — date] placeholder with a real verification date once each gurdwara's committee has confirmed the entry. Do not publish unverified listings. The list below is a structural template; populate with confirmed details from the live Gurdwaras.com directory.

Quick orientation

The GTA's Sikh community is large and well-organized. Most neighbourhoods have a gurdwara within a 10-minute drive. Service times vary, but most run:

  • Daily nitnem (early morning prayers) starting around 4–5 AM.
  • Daily diwan with kirtan in the evening, typically 6–8 PM.
  • Sunday/weekend langar continuously through midday, with the largest crowds.
  • Special diwan on Gurpurabs (Guru anniversaries) — call ahead.

Most gurdwaras have parking, accessible entrances, and English/Punjabi speakers. Many also offer Punjabi-language classes for children, weekly youth programs, and library access.

Brampton

Toronto (City)

Within the City of Toronto, gurdwaras are concentrated in the western and northern parts of the city. The downtown core has fewer gurdwaras than the suburbs, reflecting where the Sikh community has historically settled.

Etobicoke / Rexdale corridor

The corridor along Albion Road and Rexdale Boulevard has several gurdwaras within walking distance of each other. Confirmed listings at gurdwaras.com/listings/toronto.

Scarborough

Scarborough's Sikh community has grown significantly over the last two decades. Multiple active gurdwaras serve the eastern GTA. Verified listings at the directory page above.

North York

A handful of gurdwaras serve the North York area, including a historic gurdwara in the Wilson Avenue / Sheppard area.

Mississauga

Mississauga's Dixie Road / Derry Road area is a hub for the city's Sikh community. The largest gurdwara in the area, Ontario Khalsa Darbar, hosts the GTA's largest annual nagar kirtan and serves langar continuously on weekends.

Smaller gurdwaras serve the Erin Mills, Meadowvale, and Streetsville neighbourhoods.

Vaughan and York Region

Vaughan, Markham, and Richmond Hill have growing Sikh communities and recently-established gurdwaras. Listings at gurdwaras.com/listings/vaughan and adjacent York Region city pages.

Visiting tips

  • Time of day matters. Mid-morning is quietest; evening diwan and Sunday langar are the busiest.
  • Special diwan on Gurpurabs runs longer and more crowded than usual. Call the gurdwara to confirm timing — most do not publish the schedule online.
  • Parking is generally ample at suburban gurdwaras and tighter at city gurdwaras. On Vaisakhi or Bandi Chhor Divas, plan for street parking and walk-in.
  • Accessibility. Most newer gurdwaras have step-free access, elevators between floors, and accessible washrooms. Older gurdwaras may not — call ahead if accessibility matters.
  • Public transit. The GTA's gurdwaras are well-served by buses; several are walkable from MiWay (Mississauga), Brampton Transit, TTC, and YRT routes. Check the listing's address page for transit directions.

Vaisakhi 2026 in the GTA

Vaisakhi is the biggest day of the Sikh calendar — celebrating the founding of the Khalsa Panth in 1699. Most GTA gurdwaras host or participate in the Khalsa Day Parade, the largest annual Sikh-Canadian gathering. Expect:

  • Multi-hour nagar kirtan procession through Mississauga / Brampton
  • Continuous langar at major participating gurdwaras
  • Public-square gatherings with kirtan and speeches

Closer to the date, Gurdwaras.com will publish a Vaisakhi-2026-specific page with the parade route, host gurdwara contacts, and timing.
