Gurdwara Sisganj Sahib in Chandni Chowk marks the site where Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru revered as Hind Di Chadar (Shield of India), was publicly beheaded on November 24, 1675 on the orders of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb for refusing to convert to Islam. The Guru had sacrificed his life to defend the religious freedom of Kashmiri Hindu Brahmins who had sought his protection from forced conversion. The shrine was first built by Sikh General Baghel Singh in 1783 and the present structure was completed in 1930 after prolonged litigation during the British Raj.
