Guru Arjan Dev Ji

Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Guru, compiled the Adi Granth — the first edition of what became Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji — and installed it at Harmandir Sahib.

Life

Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Guru, compiled the Adi Granth — the first edition of what became Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji — and installed it at Harmandir Sahib.

He built Harmandir Sahib with four doors, a sign that the house is open to every direction and every community. In 1606 he was martyred under Jahangir after refusing to alter the Granth.

  • Compiled the Adi Granth — the first edition of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
  • Built the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) at Amritsar with four doors signifying openness to all four castes / directions.
  • First Sikh martyr — tortured and killed by emperor Jahangir for refusing to alter the Granth.
