The Golden Temple

Harmandir Sahib — Sri Darbar Sahib, the Golden Temple — stands in the sarovar at Amritsar, Punjab. Sikhs know it as the house Guru Arjan Dev Ji built with four doors, in the city Guru Ram Das Ji founded.

This is a place guide, not a ticket desk. Gurdwaras.com does not sell entry, does not rate gurdwaras, and does not invent queue times. Live kirtan from Darbar Sahib is on /kirtan.

History

Guru Ram Das Ji founded the city of Amritsar. Guru Arjan Dev Ji built Harmandir Sahib in the sarovar and installed the Adi Granth there. The four doors are a Sikh teaching: the house is open from every side.

Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji built the Akal Takht facing the Harmandir. Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s court is remembered for later gold plating — the name “Golden Temple” is that later skin, not the original brick gurdwara.

1984’s Operation Blue Star damaged the Akal Takht. That history is on /learn/sikh-history. This guide does not replay casualty figures this site has not sourced.

Significance

Harmandir Sahib is the most widely recognised Sikh gurdwara. Daily prakash, kirtan, hukamnama, and langar run as at other gurdwaras, at a scale that draws sangat from around the world.

A visit is seva and darshan, not a rated attraction. Gurdwaras.com has no star ratings for places of worship.

Visiting

Cover your head, remove shoes, and wash your hands. Dress modestly. Photography rules are set on site and can change; follow the sevadars.

The parikarma around the sarovar, the causeway to the Harmandir, and langar halls are the usual path. There is no booking through this website.

For general gurdwara etiquette anywhere, see /visit. For Amritsar hours and security, use the SGPC / Darbar Sahib information channels — not a time invented here.

Langar

Langar at Harmandir Sahib is the same institution Guru Nanak began and Guru Amar Das made a condition of audience: sit in a pangat and eat. Volunteers cook and serve; you do not pay this site for a meal.

The idea is explained on /learn/sikh-concepts#langar and /learn/sikh-history.

Live kirtan

Asa di Vaar at amrit vela, kirtan through the day, Rehras near sunset, and further paath at night are the usual rhythm. Exact clock times are IST and set in Amritsar.

Listen on /kirtan — Live Kirtan from Sri Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple). That page is the stream hub; this page is the place guide.
