ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮ ਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਗੁਰਪੁਰਬ
The 2026 date
SGPC / Harmandir Sahib: Tuesday, 27 October 2026 — 11 Katak, Nanakshahi Samat 558.
Original 2003 Nanakshahi: Friday, 9 October 2026 — 25 Assu (original 2003 Nanakshahi).
Guru Ram Das Ji (1534–1581) was the fourth Sikh Guru. He is remembered as the founder of Ramdaspur — today’s Amritsar — and for excavating the Amrit Sarovar, the pool later enclosed by Harmandir Sahib.
Harmandir Sahib (the Golden Temple) was completed in the time of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Guru — not under Guru Ram Das Ji alone.
Parkash Purab dates can follow the SGPC / Akal Takht calendar or the original 2003 solar Nanakshahi calendar. This page cites both. Confirm the diwan with your local gurdwara.
History
Guru Ram Das Ji was born in Chuna Mandi, Lahore, and was known in youth as Bhai Jetha. He received Guruship from Guru Amar Das Ji in 1574 and served as the fourth Guru until 1581.
He laid out the settlement of Ramdaspur and had the Amrit Sarovar excavated. The sarovar later became the setting of Harmandir Sahib, completed under Guru Arjan Dev Ji.
He composed the four Lavan stanzas sung in the Anand Karaj, the Sikh wedding ceremony. Those hymns remain part of living Sikh practice.
Significance
The gurpurab marks the Parkash (birth anniversary) of the Guru who founded Amritsar and whose hymns shape the Anand Karaj.
At Harmandir Sahib the day is observed with special kirtan. In 2026 the SGPC announced a Nagar Kirtan from Sri Akal Takht Sahib on 26 October, the day before the Parkash Purab on 27 October (The Tribune, 7 October 2026).
Sangats worldwide mark the day with kirtan, katha, and langar. Local hours are set by each gurdwara, not by this directory.
How it is observed
Many gurdwaras complete an Akhand Paath or Sehaj Paath so that the bhog falls on the gurpurab.
The sangat gathers for Asa di Var, kirtan, and katha of Guru Ram Das Ji’s life and bani.
Langar is served throughout the day. Some cities take out a Nagar Kirtan. Dress modestly, cover your head, and remove shoes — see the visiting guide on this site.
This page does not invent service times. Open Nearby or a city listing and confirm with that sangat.
