ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਗੁਰਪੁਰਬ
The 2026 date
SGPC / Harmandir Sahib: Tuesday, 24 November 2026 — 9 Maghar.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji (1469–1539) is the founder of Sikhi. His birth is commemorated as a gurpurab — an anniversary observed with kirtan, katha, and langar.
In India the same Parkash Purab is widely called Guru Nanak Jayanti. It is one observance, not two dates.
The janam asthan associated with Guru Nanak is Rai Bhoi di Talwandi, today Nankana Sahib in present-day Pakistan.
The SGPC keeps the day on Kartik Purnima (the full moon of Katak). Confirm the diwan time with your local gurdwara.
History
Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 at Rai Bhoi di Talwandi. Sikh tradition remembers his parents as Mehta Kalu and Mata Tripta, and his elder sister Bebe Nanaki.
He taught Naam Japna, Kirat Karni, and Vand Chakna — remember the Divine, earn honestly, and share. Those three remain the everyday frame of Sikh life.
His journeys (Udasis) carried that teaching across South Asia and beyond. He settled at Kartarpur, where a sangat lived by those practices. Guruship then passed to Guru Angad Dev Ji.
Significance
Parkash Purab marks the birth anniversary of the founder of Sikhi. Guru Nanak Jayanti is the same day under the name used in much of India — not a second date.
Sangats mark it with Asa di Var, kirtan, katha, and langar. Harmandir Sahib and Nankana Sahib hold large diwans; local hours are set by each gurdwara.
How it is observed
Many gurdwaras complete an Akhand Paath so the bhog falls on the gurpurab.
Some cities take out a Nagar Kirtan the day before. Dress modestly, cover your head, and remove shoes — see the visiting guide on this site.
This page does not invent service times. Open Nearby or a city listing and confirm with that sangat.
