ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦੁਰ ਜੀ ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਦਿਵਸ
The 2026 date
SGPC / Harmandir Sahib: Monday, 14 December 2026 — 29 Maghar.
Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji (1621–1675) was the ninth Sikh Guru. He was executed in Delhi in 1675 after refusing to convert, and after standing for the right of Kashmiri Pandits to practise their faith.
Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib in Chandni Chowk marks the site of the martyrdom. Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib marks where the body was cremated.
Shaheedi Divas is a day of remembrance — kirtan, katha, and often an Akhand Paath — not a festival. It is not the late-December Chaar Sahibzaade week.
History
Kashmiri Pandits sought the Guru’s help against forced conversion under Aurangzeb. Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji went to Delhi and was imprisoned.
Companions Bhai Mati Das, Bhai Sati Das, and Bhai Dayala were executed first. The Guru was beheaded in Chandni Chowk on the shaheedi remembered each year.
Bhai Jaita (later Bhai Jiwan Singh) carried the Guru’s head to Anandpur Sahib. Lakhi Shah Vanjara cremated the body by burning his own house — the site of Rakab Ganj Sahib.
Significance
The shaheedi is remembered as a stand for freedom of conscience — the right of another community to keep its faith.
Delhi and Anandpur Sahib hold major diwans. Sangats worldwide mark the day with kirtan and katha.
How it is observed
Many gurdwaras complete an Akhand Paath so the bhog falls on Shaheedi Divas.
The sangat gathers for kirtan and katha of the ninth Guru and the three companions martyred with him.
