Maaroo, Fifth Mehla:
ਜੀਵਨਾ ਸਫਲ ਜੀਵਨ ਸੁਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਸਦ ਜੀਵਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jeevanaa safal jeevan sun har jap jap sadh jeevanaa ||1|| rahaau ||
Fruitful is the life, the life of one who hears about the Lord, and chants and meditates on Him; he lives forever. ||1||Pause||
ਪੀਵਨਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਮਨੁ ਆਘਾਵੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵਨਾ ॥੧॥
peevanaa jit man aaghaavai naam a(n)mirat ras peevanaa ||1||
The real drink is that which satisfies the mind; this drink is the sublime essence of the Ambrosial Naam. ||1||
ਖਾਵਨਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਭੂਖ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਸੰਤੋਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੀਵਨਾ ॥੨॥
khaavanaa jit bhookh na laagai sa(n)tokh sadhaa tirapateevanaa ||2||
The real food is that which will never leave you hungry again; it will leave you contented and satisfied forever. ||2||
ਪੈਨਣਾ ਰਖੁ ਪਤਿ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰ ਫਿਰਿ ਨਾਗੇ ਨਹੀ ਥੀਵਨਾ ॥੩॥
painanaa rakh pat paramesur fir naage nahee theevanaa ||3||
The real clothes are those which protect your honor before the Transcendent Lord, and do not leave you naked ever again. ||3||
ਭੋਗਨਾ ਮਨ ਮਧੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਸੰਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਲੀਵਨਾ ॥੪॥
bhoganaa man madhe har ras sa(n)tasa(n)gat meh leevanaa ||4||
The real enjoyment within the mind is to be absorbed in the sublime essence of the Lord, in the Society of the Saints. ||4||
ਬਿਨੁ ਤਾਗੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੂਈ ਆਨੀ ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੀਵਨਾ ॥੫॥
bin taage bin sooiee aanee man har bhagatee sa(n)g seevanaa ||5||
Sew devotional worship to the Lord into the mind, without any needle or thread. ||5||
ਮਾਤਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਅਉਖੀਵਨਾ ॥੬॥
maatiaa har ras meh raate tis bahuR na kabahoo aaukheevanaa ||6||
Imbued and intoxicated with the sublime essence of the Lord, this experience will never wear off again. ||6||
ਮਿਲਿਓ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਰਬ ਨਿਧਾਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਦੀਵਨਾ ॥੭॥
milio tis sarab nidhaanaa prabh kirapaal jis dheevanaa ||7||
One is blessed with all treasures, when God, in His Mercy, gives them. ||7||
ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਚਰਣ ਸੰਤ ਧੋਇ ਪੀਵਨਾ ॥੮॥੩॥੬॥
sukh naanak sa(n)tan kee sevaa charan sa(n)t dhoi peevanaa ||8||3||6||
O Nanak, service to the Saints beings peace; I drink in the wash water of the feet of the Saints. ||8||3||6||

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ikOankaar satigur prasaadh ||
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਜਿਸੁ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਚਿੰਤਾ ॥
jis gireh bahut tisai gireh chi(n)taa ||
The household which is filled with abundance - that household suffers anxiety.
ਜਿਸੁ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਥੋਰੀ ਸੁ ਫਿਰੈ ਭ੍ਰਮੰਤਾ ॥
jis gireh thoree su firai bhrama(n)taa ||
One whose household has little, wanders around searching for more.
ਦੁਹੂ ਬਿਵਸਥਾ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਸੋਈ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਭਾਲੀਐ ॥੧॥
dhuhoo bivasathaa te jo mukataa soiee suhelaa bhaaleeaai ||1||
He alone is happy and at peace, who is liberated from both conditions. ||1||
ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਰਾਜ ਮਹਿ ਨਰਕੁ ਉਦਾਸ ਕਰੋਧਾ ॥
gireh raaj meh narak udhaas karodhaa ||
Householders and kings fall into hell, along with renunciates and angry men,
ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਬੇਦ ਪਾਠ ਸਭਿ ਸੋਧਾ ॥
bahu bidh bedh paaTh sabh sodhaa ||
and all those who study and recite the Vedas in so many ways.
ਦੇਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਜੋ ਰਹੈ ਅਲਿਪਤਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਘਾਲੀਐ ॥੨॥
dhehee meh jo rahai alipataa tis jan kee pooran ghaaleeaai ||2||
Perfect is the work of that humble servant, who remains unattached while in the body. ||2||
ਜਾਗਤ ਸੂਤਾ ਭਰਮਿ ਵਿਗੂਤਾ ॥
jaagat sootaa bharam vigootaa ||
The mortal sleeps, even while he is awake; he is being plundered by doubt.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈਐ ਮੀਤਾ ॥
bin gur mukat na hoieeaai meetaa ||
Without the Guru, liberation is not obtained, friend.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਤੁਟਹਿ ਹਉ ਬੰਧਨ ਏਕੋ ਏਕੁ ਨਿਹਾਲੀਐ ॥੩॥
saadhasa(n)g tuTeh hau ba(n)dhan eko ek nihaaleeaai ||3||
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the bonds of egotism are released, and one comes to behold the One and only Lord. ||3||
ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਤ ਬੰਧਾ ਨਹ ਕਰੈ ਤ ਨਿੰਦਾ ॥
karam karai ta ba(n)dhaa neh karai ta ni(n)dhaa ||
Doing deeds, one is placed in bondage; but if he does not act, he is slandered.
ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨ ਮਨੁ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਚਿੰਦਾ ॥
moh magan man viaapiaa chi(n)dhaa ||
Intoxicated with emotional attachment, the mind is afflicted with anxiety.
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਮ ਜਾਣੈ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਹਿਆਲੀਐ ॥੪॥
gur prasaadh sukh dhukh sam jaanai ghaT ghaT raam hiaaleeaai ||4||
One who looks alike upon pleasure and pain, by Guru's Grace, sees the Lord in each and every heart. ||4||
ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ਮਹਿ ਸਹਸਾ ਬਿਆਪੈ ॥
sa(n)saarai meh sahasaa biaapai ||
Within the world, one is afflicted by skepticism;
ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਪੈ ॥
akath kathaa agochar nahee jaapai ||
he does not know the imperceptible Unspoken Speech of the Lord.
ਜਿਸਹਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਸੋਈ ਬੂਝੈ ਓਹੁ ਬਾਲਕ ਵਾਗੀ ਪਾਲੀਐ ॥੫॥
jiseh bujhaae soiee boojhai oh baalak vaagee paaleeaai ||5||
He alone understands, whom the Lord inspires to understand. The Lord cherishes him as His child. ||5||
ਛੋਡਿ ਬਹੈ ਤਉ ਛੂਟੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
chhodd bahai tau chhooTai naahee ||
He may try to abandon Maya, but he is not released.
ਜਉ ਸੰਚੈ ਤਉ ਭਉ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
jau sa(n)chai tau bhau man maahee ||
If he collects things, then his mind is afraid of losing them.
ਇਸ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਚਉਰੁ ਢਾਲੀਐ ॥੬॥
eis hee meh jis kee pat raakhai tis saadhoo chaur ddaaleeaai ||6||
I wave the fly-brush over that holy person, whose honor is protected in the midst of Maya. ||6||
ਜੋ ਸੂਰਾ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਹੋਇ ਮਰਣਾ ॥
jo sooraa tis hee hoi maranaa ||
He alone is a warrior hero, who remains dead to the world.
ਜੋ ਭਾਗੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਜੋਨੀ ਫਿਰਣਾ ॥
jo bhaagai tis jonee firanaa ||
One who runs away will wander in reincarnation.
ਜੋ ਵਰਤਾਏ ਸੋਈ ਭਲ ਮਾਨੈ ਬੁਝਿ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਲੀਐ ॥੭॥
jo varataae soiee bhal maanai bujh hukamai dhuramat jaaleeaai ||7||
Whatever happens, accept that as good. Realize the Hukam of His Command, and your evil-mindedness will be burnt away. ||7||
ਜਿਤੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਾਵਹਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਗਨਾ ॥
jit jit laaveh tit tit laganaa ||
Whatever He links us to, to that we are linked.
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਅਪਣੇ ਜਚਨਾ ॥
kar kar vekhai apane jachanaa ||
He acts, and does, and watches over His Creation.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਸੁਖਦਾਤੇ ਤੂ ਦੇਹਿ ਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲੀਐ ॥੮॥੧॥੭॥
naanak ke pooran sukhadhaate too dheh ta naam samaaleeaai ||8||1||7||
You are the Giver of peace, the Perfect Lord of Nanak; as You grant Your blessings, I dwell upon Your Name. ||8||1||7||

ਬਿਰਖੈ ਹੇਠਿ ਸਭਿ ਜੰਤ ਇਕਠੇ ॥
birakhai heTh sabh ja(n)t ikaThe ||
Beneath the tree, all beings have gathered.
ਇਕਿ ਤਤੇ ਇਕਿ ਬੋਲਨਿ ਮਿਠੇ ॥
eik tate ik bolan miThe ||
Some are hot-headed, and some speak very sweetly.
ਅਸਤੁ ਉਦੋਤੁ ਭਇਆ ਉਠਿ ਚਲੇ ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਅਉਧ ਵਿਹਾਣੀਆ ॥੧॥
asat udhot bhiaa uTh chale jiau jiau aaudh vihaaneeaa ||1||
Sunset has come, and they rise up and depart; their days have run their course and expired. ||1||
ਪਾਪ ਕਰੇਦੜ ਸਰਪਰ ਮੁਠੇ ॥
paap karedhaR sarapar muThe ||
Those who committed sins are sure to be ruined.
ਅਜਰਾਈਲਿ ਫੜੇ ਫੜਿ ਕੁਠੇ ॥
ajaraieel faRe faR kuThe ||
Azraa-eel, the Angel of Death, seizes and tortures them.
