ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰਾਏ ॥
satigur dhaataa mukat karaae ||
The True Guru, the Giver, grants liberation;
ਸਭਿ ਰੋਗ ਗਵਾਏ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
sabh rog gavaae a(n)mirat ras paae ||
all diseases are eradicated, and one is blessed with the Ambrosial Nectar.
ਜਮੁ ਜਾਗਾਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਰੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝੀ ਠਰੁ ਸੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
jam jaagaat naahee kar laagai jis agan bujhee Thar seenaa he ||5||
Death, the tax collector, does not impose any tax on one whose inner fire has been put out, whose heart is cool and tranquil. ||5||
ਕਾਇਆ ਹੰਸ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
kaiaa ha(n)s preet bahu dhaaree ||
The body has developed a great love for the soul-swan.
ਓਹੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਓਹ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
oh jogee purakh oh su(n)dhar naaree ||
He is a Yogi, and she is a beautiful woman.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਭੋਗੈ ਚੋਜ ਬਿਨੋਦੀ ਉਠਿ ਚਲਤੈ ਮਤਾ ਨ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
ahinis bhogai choj binodhee uTh chalatai mataa na keenaa he ||6||
Day and night, he enjoys her with delight, and then he arises and departs without consulting her. ||6||
ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਰਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਛਾਜੈ ॥
sirasaT upai rahe prabh chhaajai ||
Creating the Universe, God remains diffused throughout it.
ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਗਾਜੈ ॥
paun paanee baisa(n)tar gaajai ||
In the wind, water and fire, He vibrates and resounds.
ਮਨੂਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਦੂਤ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
manooaa ddolai dhoot sa(n)gat mil so paae jo kichh keenaa he ||7||
The mind wavers, keeping company with evil passions; one obtains the rewards of his own actions. ||7||
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਦੋਖ ਦੁਖ ਸਹੀਐ ॥
naam visaar dhokh dhukh saheeaai ||
Forgetting the Naam, one suffers the misery of his evil ways.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਭਇਆ ਚਲਣਾ ਕਿਉ ਰਹੀਐ ॥
hukam bhiaa chalanaa kiau raheeaai ||
When the order to depart is issued, how can he remain here?
ਨਰਕ ਕੂਪ ਮਹਿ ਗੋਤੇ ਖਾਵੈ ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਮੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
narak koop meh gote khaavai jiau jal te baahar meenaa he ||8||
He falls into the pit of hell, and suffers like a fish out of water. ||8||
ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਨਰਕ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਭੋਗਾਈਐ ॥
chauraaseeh narak saakat bhogaieeaai ||
The faithless cynic has to endure 8.4 million hellish incarnations.
ਜੈਸਾ ਕੀਚੈ ਤੈਸੋ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
jaisaa keechai taiso paieeaai ||
As he acts, so does he suffer.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਬਾਧਾ ਗ੍ਰਸਿ ਦੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
satigur baajhahu mukat na hoiee kirat baadhaa gras dheenaa he ||9||
Without the True Guru, there is no liberation. Bound and gagged by his own actions, he is helpless. ||9||
ਖੰਡੇ ਧਾਰ ਗਲੀ ਅਤਿ ਭੀੜੀ ॥
kha(n)dde dhaar galee at bheeRee ||
This path is very narrow, like the sharp edge of a sword.
ਲੇਖਾ ਲੀਜੈ ਤਿਲ ਜਿਉ ਪੀੜੀ ॥
lekhaa leejai til jiau peeRee ||
When his account is read, he shall be crushed like the sesame seed in the mill.
ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਤ ਬੇਲੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
maat pitaa kalatr sut belee naahee bin har ras mukat na keenaa he ||10||
Mother, father, spouse and child - none is anyone's friend in the end. Without the Lord's Love, no one is liberated. ||10||
ਮੀਤ ਸਖੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਜਗ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
meet sakhe kete jag maahee ||
You may have many friends and companions in the world,
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
bin gur paramesar koiee naahee ||
but without the Guru, the Transcendent Lord Incarnate, there is no one at all.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਰਾਇਣਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
gur kee sevaa mukat parain anadhin keeratan keenaa he ||11||
Service to the Guru is the way to liberation. Night and day, sing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises. ||11||
ਕੂੜੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਕਉ ਧਾਵਹੁ ॥
kooR chhodd saache kau dhaavahu ||
Abandon falsehood, and pursue the Truth,
ਜੋ ਇਛਹੁ ਸੋਈ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥
jo ichhahu soiee fal paavahu ||
and you shall obtain the fruits of your desires.
ਸਾਚ ਵਖਰ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਲੈ ਲਾਹਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
saach vakhar ke vaapaaree virale lai laahaa saudhaa keenaa he ||12||
Very few are those who trade in the merchandise of Truth. Those who deal in it, obtain the true profit. ||12||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਲੈ ਚਲਹੁ ॥
har har naam vakhar lai chalahu ||
Depart with the merchandise of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har,
ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਹਲਹੁ ॥
dharasan paavahu sahaj mahalahu ||
and you shall intuitively obtain the Blessed Vision of His Darshan, in the Mansion of His Presence.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹਹਿ ਜਨ ਪੂਰੇ ਇਉ ਸਮਦਰਸੀ ਚੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
gurmukh khoj laheh jan poore iau samadharasee cheenaa he ||13||
The Gurmukhs search for Him and find Him; they are the perfect humble beings. In this way, they see Him, who looks upon all alike. ||13||
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਕੋ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
prabh bea(n)t gurmat ko paaveh ||
God is endless; following the Guru's Teachings, some find Him.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਨ ਕਉ ਸਮਝਾਵਹਿ ॥
gur kai sabadh man kau samajhaaveh ||
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they instruct their minds.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਹੁ ਇਉ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੈ ਲੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
satigur kee baanee sat sat kar maanahu iau aatam raamai leenaa he ||14||
Accept as True, Perfectly True, the Word of the True Guru's Bani. In this way, you shall merge in the Lord, the Supreme Soul. ||14||
ਨਾਰਦ ਸਾਰਦ ਸੇਵਕ ਤੇਰੇ ॥
naaradh saaradh sevak tere ||
Naarad and Saraswati are Your servants.
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਸੇਵਕ ਵਡਹੁ ਵਡੇਰੇ ॥
tirabhavan sevak vaddahu vaddere ||
Your servants are the greatest of the great, throughout the three worlds.
ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਤੂ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
sabh teree kudharat too sir sir dhaataa sabh tero kaaran keenaa he ||15||
Your creative power permeates all; You are the Great Giver of all. You created the whole creation. ||15||
ਇਕਿ ਦਰਿ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਦਰਦੁ ਵਞਾਏ ॥
eik dhar seveh dharadh van(j)aae ||
Some serve at Your Door, and their sufferings are dispelled.
ਓਇ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਛਡਾਏ ॥
oi dharageh paidhe satiguroo chhaddaae ||
They are robed with honor in the Court of the Lord, and emancipated by the True Guru.
ਹਉਮੈ ਬੰਧਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਤੋੜੇ ਚਿਤੁ ਚੰਚਲੁ ਚਲਣਿ ਨ ਦੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥
haumai ba(n)dhan satigur toRe chit cha(n)chal chalan na dheenaa he ||16||
The True Guru breaks the bonds of egotism, and restrains the fickle consciousness. ||16||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਚੀਨਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਸਾਈ ॥
satigur milahu cheenahu bidh saiee ||
Meet the True Guru, and search for the way,
ਜਿਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥
jit prabh paavahu ganat na kaiee ||
by which you may find God, and not have to answer for your account.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਭੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੭॥੨॥੮॥
haumai maar karahu gur sevaa jan naanak har ra(n)g bheenaa he ||17||2||8||
Subdue your egotism, and serve the Guru; O servant Nanak, you shall be drenched with the Lord's Love. ||17||2||8||
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
maaroo mahalaa pehilaa ||
Maaroo, First Mehla:
ਅਸੁਰ ਸਘਾਰਣ ਰਾਮੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥
asur saghaaran raam hamaaraa ||
My Lord is the Destroyer of demons.
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਰਮਈਆ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
ghaT ghaT ramieeaa raam piaaraa ||
My Beloved Lord is pervading each and every heart.
ਨਾਲੇ ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਲਖੀਐ ਮੂਲੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਿਖੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
naale alakh na lakheeaai moole gurmukh likh veechaaraa he ||1||
The unseen Lord is always with us, but He is not seen at all. The Gurmukh contemplates the record. ||1||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥
gurmukh saadhoo saran tumaaree ||
The Holy Gurmukh seeks Your Sanctuary.
