ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
poorai satigur sojhee paiee ||
The Perfect True Guru has imparted this understanding.
ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈ ॥
eko naam ma(n)n vasaiee ||
I have enshrined the Naam, the One Name, within my mind.
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੀ ਤੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
naam japee tai naam dhiaaiee mahal pai gun gaahaa he ||11||
I chant the Naam, and meditate on the Naam. Singing His Glorious Praises, I enter the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||11||
ਸੇਵਕ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
sevak seveh ma(n)n hukam apaaraa ||
The servant serves, and obeys the Command of the Infinite Lord.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸਾਰਾ ॥
manmukh hukam na jaaneh saaraa ||
The self-willed manmukhs do not know the value of the Lord's Command.
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਮੰਨੇ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
hukame ma(n)ne hukame vaddiaaiee hukame veparavaahaa he ||12||
By the Hukam of the Lord's Command, one is exalted; by His Hukam, one is glorified; by His Hukam, one becomes carefree. ||12||
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
gur parasaadhee hukam pachhaanai ||
By Guru's Grace, one recognizes the Lord's Hukam.
ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਇਕਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਣੈ ॥
dhaavat raakhai ikat ghar aanai ||
The wandering mind is restrained, and brought back to the home of the One Lord.
ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
naame raataa sadhaa bairaagee naam ratan man taahaa he ||13||
Imbued with the Naam, one remains forever detached; the jewel of the Naam rests within the mind. ||13||
ਸਭ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ॥
sabh jag meh varatai eko soiee ||
The One Lord is pervasive throughout all the world.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
gur parasaadhee paragaT hoiee ||
By Guru's Grace, He is revealed.
ਸਬਦੁ ਸਲਾਹਹਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
sabadh salaaheh se jan niramal nij ghar vaasaa taahaa he ||14||
Those humble beings who praise the Shabad are immaculate; they dwell within the home of their own inner self. ||14||
ਸਦਾ ਭਗਤ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥
sadhaa bhagat teree saranaiee ||
The devotees abide forever in Your Sanctuary, Lord.
ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
agam agochar keemat nahee paiee ||
You are inaccessible and unfathomable; Your value cannot be estimated.
ਜਿਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਤਿਉ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
jiau tudh bhaaveh tiau too raakheh gurmukh naam dhiaahaa he ||15||
As it pleases Your Will, You keep us; the Gurmukh meditates on the Naam. ||15||
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ॥
sadhaa sadhaa tere gun gaavaa ||
Forever and ever, I sing Your Glorious Praises.
ਸਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਾ ॥
sache saahib terai man bhaavaa ||
O my True Lord and Master, may I become pleasing to Your Mind.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਸਚੁ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੧॥੧੦॥
naanak saach kahai bena(n)tee sach dhevahu sach samaahaa he ||16||1||10||
Nanak offers this true prayer: O Lord, please bless me with Truth, that I may merge in the Truth. ||16||1||10||
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
maaroo mahalaa teejaa ||
Maaroo, Third Mehla:
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥
satigur sevan se vaddabhaagee ||
Those who serve the True Guru are very fortunate.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
anadhin saach naam liv laagee ||
Night and day, they remain lovingly attuned to the True Name.
ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਰਵਿਆ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚੈ ਓਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
sadhaa sukhadhaataa raviaa ghaT a(n)tar sabadh sachai omaahaa he ||1||
The Lord, the Giver of peace, abides forever deep within their hearts; they delight in the True Word of the Shabad. ||1||
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
nadhar kare taa guroo milaae ||
When the Lord grants His Grace, one meets with the Guru.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
har kaa naam ma(n)n vasaae ||
The Name of the Lord is enshrined within the mind.
ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸਬਦੇ ਮਨਿ ਓਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
har man vasiaa sadhaa sukhadhaataa sabadhe man omaahaa he ||2||
The Lord, the Giver of peace, abides forever within the mind; the mind is delighted with the Word of the Shabad. ||2||
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
kirapaa kare taa mel milaae ||
When the Lord bestows His Mercy, He unites in His Union.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
haumai mamataa sabadh jalaae ||
Egotism and attachment are burned away by the Shabad.
ਸਦਾ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਰਹੈ ਇਕ ਰੰਗੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਕਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
sadhaa mukat rahai ik ra(n)gee naahee kisai naal kaahaa he ||3||
In the Love of the One Lord, one remains liberated forever; he is not in conflict with anyone. ||3||
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਘੋਰ ਅੰਧਾਰਾ ॥
bin satigur seve ghor a(n)dhaaraa ||
Without serving the True Guru, there is only pitch-black darkness.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਪਾਰਾ ॥
bin sabadhai koi na paavai paaraa ||
Without the Shabad, no one crosses over to the other side.
ਜੋ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਹਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਸਬਦੇ ਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
jo sabadh raate mahaa bairaagee so sach sabadhe laahaa he ||4||
Those who are imbued with the Shabad, are very detached. They earn the profit of the True Word of the Shabad. ||4||
ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਕਰਤੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
dhukh sukh karatai dhur likh paiaa ||
Pain and pleasure are pre-ordained by the Creator.
ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਾਇਆ ॥
dhoojaa bhaau aap varataiaa ||
He Himself has caused the love of duality to be pervasive.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਅਲਿਪਤੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਵੇਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
gurmukh hovai su alipato varatai manmukh kaa kiaa vesaahaa he ||5||
One who becomes Gurmukh remains detached; how can anyone trust the self-willed manmukh? ||5||
ਸੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਜੋ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ॥
se manmukh jo sabadh na pachhaaneh ||
Those who do not recognize the Shabad are manmukhs.
ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਭੈ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ॥
gur ke bhai kee saar na jaaneh ||
They do not know the essence of the Fear of the Guru.
ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਉ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਮੁ ਕਾਢਿ ਲਏਗਾ ਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
bhai bin kiau nirabhau sach paieeaai jam kaadd legaa saahaa he ||6||
Without this Fear, how can anyone find the Fearless True Lord? The Messenger of Death will pull the breath out. ||6||
ਅਫਰਿਓ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
afario jam maariaa na jaiee ||
The invulnerable Messenger of Death cannot be killed.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥
gur kai sabadhe neR na aaiee ||
The Word of the Guru's Shabad prevents him from approaching.
ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣੇ ਤਾ ਦੂਰਹੁ ਭਾਗੈ ਮਤੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
sabadh sune taa dhoorahu bhaagai mat maare har jeeau veparavaahaa he ||7||
When he hears the Word of the Shabad, he runs far away. He is afraid that the self-sufficient Dear Lord will kill him. ||7||
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਕੀ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਸਿਰਕਾਰਾ ॥
har jeeau kee hai sabh sirakaaraa ||
The Dear Lord is the Ruler above all.
ਏਹੁ ਜਮੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ॥
eh jam kiaa kare vichaaraa ||
What can this wretched Messenger of Death do?
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਬੰਦਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਕਢਦਾ ਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
hukamee ba(n)dhaa hukam kamaavai hukame kaddadhaa saahaa he ||8||
As slave to the Hukam of the Lord's Command, the mortal acts according to His Hukam. According to His Hukam, he is deprived of his breath. ||8||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਕੀਆ ਅਕਾਰਾ ॥
gurmukh saachai keeaa akaaraa ||
The Gurmukh realizes that the True Lord created the creation.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥
gurmukh pasariaa sabh paasaaraa ||
The Gurmukh knows that the Lord has expanded the entire expanse.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
gurmukh hovai so sach boojhai sabadh sachai sukh taahaa he ||9||
One who becomes Gurmukh, understands the True Lord. Through the True Word of the Shabad, he finds peace. ||9||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਕਰਮਿ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥
gurmukh jaataa karam bidhaataa ||
The Gurmukh knows that the Lord is the Architect of karma.
