ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥
sevaa surat sabadh chit laae ||
Center your awareness on seva-selfless service-and focus your consciousness on the Word of the Shabad.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
haumai maar sadhaa sukh paiaa maiaa moh chukaavaniaa ||1||
Subduing your ego, you shall find a lasting peace, and your emotional attachment to Maya will be dispelled. ||1||
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਣਿਆ ॥
hau vaaree jeeau vaaree satigur kai balihaaraniaa ||
I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, I am totally devoted to the True Guru.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ਹੋਆ ਜੀ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmatee paragaas hoaa jee anadhin har gun gaavaniaa ||1|| rahaau ||
Through the Guru's Teachings, the Divine Light has dawned; I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, night and day. ||1||Pause||
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਖੋਜੇ ਤਾ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਏ ॥
tan man khoje taa naau paae ||
Search your body and mind, and find the Name.
ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥
dhaavat raakhai Thaak rahaae ||
Restrain your wandering mind, and keep it in check.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਗਾਵੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
gur kee baanee anadhin gaavai sahaje bhagat karaavaniaa ||2||
Night and day, sing the Songs of the Guru's Bani; worship the Lord with intuitive devotion. ||2||
ਇਸੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਅਸੰਖਾ ॥
eis kaiaa a(n)dhar vasat asa(n)khaa ||
Within this body are countless objects.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਵੇਖਾ ॥
gurmukh saach milai taa vekhaa ||
The Gurmukh attains Truth, and comes to see them.
ਨਉ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਦਸਵੈ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
nau dharavaaje dhasavai mukataa anahadh sabadh vajaavaniaa ||3||
Beyond the nine gates, the Tenth Gate is found, and liberation is obtained. The Unstruck Melody of the Shabad vibrates. ||3||
ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਚੀ ਨਾਈ ॥
sachaa saahib sachee naiee ||
True is the Master, and True is His Name.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈ ॥
gur parasaadhee ma(n)n vasaiee ||
By Guru's Grace, He comes to dwell within the mind.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
anadhin sadhaa rahai ra(n)g raataa dhar sachai sojhee paavaniaa ||4||
Night and day, remain attuned to the Lord's Love forever, and you shall obtain understanding in the True Court. ||4||
ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥
paap pu(n)n kee saar na jaanee ||
Those who do not understand the nature of sin and virtue
ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗੀ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣੀ ॥
dhoojai laagee bharam bhulaanee ||
are attached to duality; they wander around deluded.
ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਅੰਧਾ ਮਗੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
agiaanee a(n)dhaa mag na jaanai fir fir aavan jaavaniaa ||5||
The ignorant and blind people do not know the way; they come and go in reincarnation over and over again. ||5||
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
gur sevaa te sadhaa sukh paiaa ||
Serving the Guru, I have found eternal peace;
ਹਉਮੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਇਆ ॥
haumai meraa Thaak rahaiaa ||
my ego has been silenced and subdued.
ਗੁਰ ਸਾਖੀ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ਬਜਰ ਕਪਾਟ ਖੁਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
gur saakhee miTiaa a(n)dhiaaraa bajar kapaaT khulaavaniaa ||6||
Through the Guru's Teachings, the darkness has been dispelled, and the heavy doors have been opened. ||6||
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥
haumai maar ma(n)n vasaiaa ||
Subduing my ego, I have enshrined the Lord within my mind.
ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਸਦਾ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
gur charanee sadhaa chit laiaa ||
I focus my consciousness on the Guru's Feet forever.
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
gur kirapaa te man tan niramal niramal naam dhiaavaniaa ||7||
By Guru's Grace, my mind and body are immaculate and pure; I meditate on the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||7||
ਜੀਵਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਸਭੁ ਤੁਧੈ ਤਾਈ ॥
jeevan maranaa sabh tudhai taiee ||
From birth to death, everything is for You.
ਜਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
jis bakhase tis dhe vaddiaaiee ||
You bestow greatness upon those whom You have forgiven.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਸਦਾ ਤੂੰ ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣੁ ਸਵਾਰਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੧॥੨॥
naanak naam dhiaai sadhaa too(n) ja(n)man maran savaaraniaa ||8||1||2||
O Nanak, meditating forever on the Naam, you shall be blessed in both birth and death. ||8||1||2||
ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
maajh mahalaa teejaa ||
Maajh, Third Mehla:
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
meraa prabh niramal agam apaaraa ||
My God is Immaculate, Inaccessible and Infinite.
ਬਿਨੁ ਤਕੜੀ ਤੋਲੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
bin takaRee tolai sa(n)saaraa ||
Without a scale, He weighs the universe.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਬੂਝੈ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
gurmukh hovai soiee boojhai gun keh gunee samaavaniaa ||1||
One who becomes Gurmukh, understands. Chanting His Glorious Praises, he is absorbed into the Lord of Virtue. ||1||
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥
hau vaaree jeeau vaaree har kaa naam ma(n)n vasaavaniaa ||
I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those whose minds are filled with the Name of the Lord.
ਜੋ ਸਚਿ ਲਾਗੇ ਸੇ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗੇ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jo sach laage se anadhin jaage dhar sachai sobhaa paavaniaa ||1|| rahaau ||
Those who are committed to Truth remain awake and aware night and day. They are honored in the True Court. ||1||Pause||
ਆਪਿ ਸੁਣੈ ਤੈ ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੈ ॥
aap sunai tai aape vekhai ||
He Himself hears, and He Himself sees.
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਲੇਖੈ ॥
jis no nadhar kare soiee jan lekhai ||
Those, upon whom He casts His Glance of Grace, become acceptable.
ਆਪੇ ਲਾਇ ਲਏ ਸੋ ਲਾਗੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
aape lai le so laagai gurmukh sach kamaavaniaa ||2||
They are attached, whom the Lord Himself attaches; as Gurmukh, they live the Truth. ||2||
ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਸੁ ਕਿਥੈ ਹਥੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
jis aap bhulaae su kithai hath paae ||
Those whom the Lord Himself misleads-whose hand can they take?
ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਮੇਟਣਾ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥
poorab likhiaa su meTanaa na jaae ||
That which is pre-ordained, cannot be erased.
ਜਿਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪੂਰੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
jin satigur miliaa se vaddabhaagee poorai karam milaavaniaa ||3||
Those who meet the True Guru are very fortunate and blessed; through perfect karma, He is met. ||3||
ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਧਨ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸੁਤੀ ॥
peieeaRai dhan anadhin sutee ||
The young bride is fast asleep in her parents' home, night and day.
ਕੰਤਿ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ਅਵਗਣਿ ਮੁਤੀ ॥
ka(n)t visaaree avagan mutee ||
She has forgotten her Husband Lord; because of her faults and demerits, she is abandoned.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਬਿਲਲਾਦੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
anadhin sadhaa firai bilalaadhee bin pir needh na paavaniaa ||4||
She wanders around continually, crying out, night and day. Without her Husband Lord, she cannot get any sleep. ||4||
ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
peieeaRai sukhadhaataa jaataa ||
In this world of her parents' home, she may come to know the Giver of peace,
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥
haumai maar gur sabadh pachhaataa ||
if she subdues her ego, and recognizes the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਸੇਜ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਸਦਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵੇ ਸਚੁ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਬਣਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
sej suhaavee sadhaa pir raave sach seegaar banaavaniaa ||5||
Her bed is beautiful; she ravishes and enjoys her Husband Lord forever. She is adorned with the Decorations of Truth. ||5||
