ਮਨਸਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥
manasaa maar sach samaanee ||
Subduing their desires, they merge with the True One;
ਇਨਿ ਮਨਿ ਡੀਠੀ ਸਭ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੀ ॥
ein man ddeeThee sabh aavan jaanee ||
they see in their minds that everyone comes and goes in reincarnation.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸਦਾ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
satigur seve sadhaa man nihachal nij ghar vaasaa paavaniaa ||3||
Serving the True Guru, they become stable forever, and they obtain their dwelling in the home of the self. ||3||
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥
gur kai sabadh ridhai dhikhaiaa ||
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Lord is seen within one's own heart.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਇਆ ॥
maiaa moh sabadh jalaiaa ||
Through the Shabad, I have burned my emotional attachment to Maya.
ਸਚੋ ਸਚਾ ਵੇਖਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
sacho sachaa vekh saalaahee gur sabadhee sach paavaniaa ||4||
I gaze upon the Truest of the True, and I praise Him. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, I obtain the True One. ||4||
ਜੋ ਸਚਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਤਿਨ ਸਚੀ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
jo sach raate tin sachee liv laagee ||
Those who are attuned to Truth are blessed with the Love of the True One.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਹਿ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥
har naam samaaleh se vaddabhaagee ||
Those who praise the Lord's Name are very fortunate.
ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
sachai sabadh aap milaae satasa(n)gat sach gun gaavaniaa ||5||
Through the Word of His Shabad, the True One blends with Himself, those who join the True Congregation and sing the Glorious Praises of the True One. ||5||
ਲੇਖਾ ਪੜੀਐ ਜੇ ਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
lekhaa paReeaai je lekhe vich hovai ||
We could read the account of the Lord, if He were in any account.
ਓਹੁ ਅਗਮੁ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਧਿ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
oh agam agochar sabadh sudh hovai ||
He is Inaccessible and Incomprehensible; through the Shabad, understanding is obtained.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਹੋਰੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
anadhin sach sabadh saalaahee hor koi na keemat paavaniaa ||6||
Night and day, praise the True Word of the Shabad. There is no other way to know His Worth. ||6||
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਥਾਕੇ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥
paR paR thaake saa(n)t na aaiee ||
People read and recite until they grow weary, but they do not find peace.
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਜਾਲੇ ਸੁਧਿ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥
tirasanaa jaale sudh na kaiee ||
Consumed by desire, they have no understanding at all.
ਬਿਖੁ ਬਿਹਾਝਹਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਸੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
bikh bihaajheh bikh moh piaase kooR bol bikh khaavaniaa ||7||
They purchase poison, and they are thirsty with their fascination for poison. Telling lies, they eat poison. ||7||
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣਾ ॥
gur parasaadhee eko jaanaa ||
By Guru's Grace, I know the One.
ਦੂਜਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥
dhoojaa maar man sach samaanaa ||
Subduing my sense of duality, my mind is absorbed into the True One.
ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਮਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੧੭॥੧੮॥
naanak eko naam varatai man a(n)tar gur parasaadhee paavaniaa ||8||17||18||
O Nanak, the One Name is pervading deep within my mind; by Guru's Grace, I receive it. ||8||17||18||
ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
maajh mahalaa teejaa ||
Maajh, Third Mehla:
ਵਰਨ ਰੂਪ ਵਰਤਹਿ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੇ ॥
varan roop varateh sabh tere ||
In all colors and forms, You are pervading.
ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਫੇਰ ਪਵਹਿ ਘਣੇਰੇ ॥
mar mar ja(n)meh fer paveh ghanere ||
People die over and over again; they are re-born, and make their rounds on the wheel of reincarnation.
ਤੂੰ ਏਕੋ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰਾ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
too(n) eko nihachal agam apaaraa gurmatee boojh bujhaavaniaa ||1||
You alone are Eternal and Unchanging, Inaccessible and Infinite. Through the Guru's Teachings, understanding is imparted. ||1||
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥
hau vaaree jeeau vaaree raam naam ma(n)n vasaavaniaa ||
I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who enshrine the Lord's Name in their minds.
ਤਿਸੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖਿਆ ਵਰਨੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tis roop na rekhiaa varan na koiee gurmatee aap bujhaavaniaa ||1|| rahaau ||
The Lord has no form, features or color. Through the Guru's Teachings, He inspires us to understand Him. ||1||Pause||
ਸਭ ਏਕਾ ਜੋਤਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ॥
sabh ekaa jot jaanai je koiee ||
The One Light is all-pervading; only a few know this.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
satigur seviaai paragaT hoiee ||
Serving the True Guru, this is revealed.
ਗੁਪਤੁ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਭ ਥਾਈ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
gupat paragaT varatai sabh thaiee jotee jot milaavaniaa ||2||
In the hidden and in the obvious, He is pervading all places. Our light merges into the Light. ||2||
ਤਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਲੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
tisanaa agan jalai sa(n)saaraa ||
The world is burning in the fire of desire,
ਲੋਭੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
lobh abhimaan bahut aha(n)kaaraa ||
in greed, arrogance and excessive ego.
ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਏ ਅਪਣੀ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
mar mar janamai pat gavaae apanee birathaa janam gavaavaniaa ||3||
People die over and over again; they are re-born, and lose their honor. They waste away their lives in vain. ||3||
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਕੋ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ॥
gur kaa sabadh ko viralaa boojhai ||
Those who understand the Word of the Guru's Shabad are very rare.
ਆਪੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਤਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣੁ ਸੂਝੈ ॥
aap maare taa tirabhavan soojhai ||
Those who subdue their egotism, come to know the three worlds.
ਫਿਰਿ ਓਹੁ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਮਰਣਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
fir oh marai na maranaa hovai sahaje sach samaavaniaa ||4||
Then, they die, never to die again. They are intuitively absorbed in the True One. ||4||
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਨ ਲਾਏ ॥
maiaa meh fir chit na laae ||
They do not focus their consciousness on Maya again.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਦ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
gur kai sabadh sadh rahai samaae ||
They remain absorbed forever in the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਸਚੁ ਸਲਾਹੇ ਸਭ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
sach salaahe sabh ghaT a(n)tar sacho sach suhaavaniaa ||5||
They praise the True One, who is contained deep within all hearts. They are blessed and exalted by the Truest of the True. ||5||
ਸਚੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਹਜੂਰੇ ॥
sach saalaahee sadhaa hajoore ||
Praise the True One, who is Ever-present.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰੇ ॥
gur kai sabadh rahiaa bharapoore ||
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, He is pervading everywhere.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਵੈ ਸਚੇ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
gur parasaadhee sach nadharee aavai sache hee sukh paavaniaa ||6||
By Guru's Grace, we come to behold the True One; from the True One, peace is obtained. ||6||
ਸਚੁ ਮਨ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
sach man a(n)dhar rahiaa samai ||
The True One permeates and pervades the mind within.
ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਆਵੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
sadhaa sach nihachal aavai na jai ||
The True One is Eternal and Unchanging; He does not come and go in reincarnation.
ਸਚੇ ਲਾਗੈ ਸੋ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
sache laagai so man niramal gurmatee sach samaavaniaa ||7||
Those who are attached to the True One are immaculate and pure. Through the Guru's Teachings, they merge in the True One. ||7||
ਸਚੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
sach saalaahee avar na koiee ||
Praise the True One, and no other.
ਜਿਤੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
jit seviaai sadhaa sukh hoiee ||
Serving Him, eternal peace is obtained.
