ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
likhiaa hovai naanakaa karataa kare su hoi ||1||
Whatever is predestined, happens, O Nanak; whatever the Creator does, comes to pass. ||1||

First Mehla:
ਰੰਨਾ ਹੋਈਆ ਬੋਧੀਆ ਪੁਰਸ ਹੋਏ ਸਈਆਦ ॥
ra(n)naa hoieeaa bodheeaa puras hoe sieeaadh ||
Women have become advisors, and men have become hunters.
ਸੀਲੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸੁਚ ਭੰਨੀ ਖਾਣਾ ਖਾਜੁ ਅਹਾਜੁ ॥
seel sa(n)jam such bha(n)nee khaanaa khaaj ahaaj ||
Humility, self-control and purity have run away; people eat the uneatable, forbidden food.
ਸਰਮੁ ਗਇਆ ਘਰਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਪਤਿ ਉਠਿ ਚਲੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
saram giaa ghar aapanai pat uTh chalee naal ||
Modesty has left her home, and honor has gone away with her.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਾ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਅਉਰੁ ਨ ਸਚਾ ਭਾਲਿ ॥੨॥
naanak sachaa ek hai aaur na sachaa bhaal ||2||
O Nanak, there is only One True Lord; do not bother to search for any other as true. ||2||

Pauree:
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭਸਮ ਲੇਪਨ ਕਰੇ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗੁਬਾਰੀ ॥
baahar bhasam lepan kare a(n)tar gubaaree ||
You smear your outer body with ashes, but within, you are filled with darkness.
ਖਿੰਥਾ ਝੋਲੀ ਬਹੁ ਭੇਖ ਕਰੇ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
khi(n)thaa jholee bahu bhekh kare dhuramat aha(n)kaaree ||
You wear the patched coat and all the right clothes and robes, but you are still egotistical and proud.
ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਊਚਰੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਸਾਰੀ ॥
saahib sabadh na uoocharai maiaa moh pasaaree ||
You do not chant the Shabad, the Word of Your Lord and Master; you are attached to the expanse of Maya.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲਾਲਚੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਹੈ ਭਰਮੈ ਗਾਵਾਰੀ ॥
a(n)tar laalach bharam hai bharamai gaavaaree ||
Within, you are filled with greed and doubt; you wander around like a fool.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਈ ਜੂਐ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥੧੪॥
naanak naam na chetiee jooaai baajee haaree ||14||
Says Nanak, you never even think of the Naam; you have lost the game of life in the gamble. ||14||
ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, First Mehla:
ਲਖ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਲਖ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਕਿਆ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਕਿਆ ਚਾਉ ॥
lakh siau preet hovai lakh jeevan kiaa khuseeaa kiaa chaau ||
You may be in love with tens of thousands, and live for thousands of years; but what good are these pleasures and occupations?
ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਵਿਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਏਕ ਘੜੀ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
vichhuRiaa vis hoi vichhoRaa ek ghaRee meh jai ||
And when you must separate from them, that separation is like poison, but they will be gone in an instant.
ਜੇ ਸਉ ਵਰ੍ਹਿਆ ਮਿਠਾ ਖਾਜੈ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਕਉੜਾ ਖਾਇ ॥
je sau varihaa miThaa khaajai bhee fir kauRaa khai ||
You may eat sweets for a hundred years, but eventually, you will have to eat the bitter as well.
ਮਿਠਾ ਖਾਧਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਕਉੜਤਣੁ ਧਾਇ ਜਾਇ ॥
miThaa khaadhaa chit na aavai kauRatan dhai jai ||
Then, you will not remember eating the sweets; bitterness will permeate you.
ਮਿਠਾ ਕਉੜਾ ਦੋਵੈ ਰੋਗ ॥
miThaa kauRaa dhovai rog ||
The sweet and the bitter are both diseases.
ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਤਿ ਵਿਗੁਤੇ ਭੋਗ ॥
naanak a(n)t vigute bhog ||
O Nanak, eating them, you will come to ruin in the end.
ਝਖਿ ਝਖਿ ਝਖਣਾ ਝਗੜਾ ਝਾਖ ॥
jhakh jhakh jhakhanaa jhagaRaa jhaakh ||
It is useless to worry and struggle to death.
ਝਖਿ ਝਖਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਝਖਹਿ ਤਿਨੑ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੧॥
jhakh jhakh jaeh jhakheh tin(h) paas ||1||
Entangled in worries and struggles, people exhaust themselves. ||1||
ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਕਾਪੜੁ ਕਾਠੁ ਰੰਗਾਇਆ ਰਾਂਗਿ ॥
kaapaR kaaTh ra(n)gaiaa raa(n)g ||
They have fine clothes and furniture of various colors.
ਘਰ ਗਚ ਕੀਤੇ ਬਾਗੇ ਬਾਗ ॥
ghar gach keete baage baag ||
Their houses are painted beautifully white.
ਸਾਦ ਸਹਜ ਕਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਖੇਲਾਇਆ ॥
saadh sahaj kar man khelaiaa ||
In pleasure and poise, they play their mind games.
ਤੈ ਸਹ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਕਹਾਇਆ ॥
tai seh paasahu kahan kahaiaa ||
When they approach You, O Lord, they shall be spoken to.
ਮਿਠਾ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਕਉੜਾ ਖਾਇਆ ॥
miThaa kar kai kauRaa khaiaa ||
They think it is sweet, so they eat the bitter.
ਤਿਨਿ ਕਉੜੈ ਤਨਿ ਰੋਗੁ ਜਮਾਇਆ ॥
tin kauRai tan rog jamaiaa ||
The bitter disease grows in the body.
ਜੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਿਠਾ ਪੇੜੈ ਪਾਇ ॥
je fir miThaa peRai pai ||
If, later on, they receive the sweet,
ਤਉ ਕਉੜਤਣੁ ਚੂਕਸਿ ਮਾਇ ॥
tau kauRatan chookas mai ||
then their bitterness shall be gone, O mother.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
naanak gurmukh paavai soi ||
O Nanak, the Gurmukh is blessed to receive
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
jis no praapat likhiaa hoi ||2||
what he is predestined to receive. ||2||

Pauree:
ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਕਪਟੁ ਹੈ ਬਾਹਰੁ ਧੋਵਾਇਆ ॥
jin kai hiradhai mail kapaT hai baahar dhovaiaa ||
Those whose hearts are filled with the filth of deception, may wash themselves on the outside.
ਕੂੜੁ ਕਪਟੁ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਪਰਗਟੀ ਆਇਆ ॥
kooR kapaT kamaavadhe kooR paragaTee aaiaa ||
They practice falsehood and deception, and their falsehood is revealed.
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਨਿਕਲੈ ਨਹ ਛਪੈ ਛਪਾਇਆ ॥
a(n)dhar hoi su nikalai neh chhapai chhapaiaa ||
That which is within them, comes out; it cannot be concealed by concealment.
ਕੂੜੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਗਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੂਨੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
kooRai laalach lagiaa fir joonee paiaa ||
Attached to falsehood and greed, the mortal is consigned to reincarnation over and over again.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਬੀਜੈ ਸੋ ਖਾਵਣਾ ਕਰਤੈ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੫॥
naanak jo beejai so khaavanaa karatai likh paiaa ||15||
O Nanak, whatever the mortal plants, he must eat. The Creator Lord has written our destiny. ||15||
ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੨ ॥
salok mahalaa doojaa ||
Shalok, Second Mehla:
ਕਥਾ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਬੇਦਂੀ ਆਣੀ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
kathaa kahaanee bedha(n)ee aanee paap pu(n)n beechaar ||
The Vedas bring forth stories and legends, and thoughts of vice and virtue.
ਦੇ ਦੇ ਲੈਣਾ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਦੇਣਾ ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥
dhe dhe lainaa lai lai dhenaa narak surag avataar ||
What is given, they receive, and what is received, they give. They are reincarnated in heaven and hell.
ਉਤਮ ਮਧਿਮ ਜਾਤੀਂ ਜਿਨਸੀ ਭਰਮਿ ਭਵੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
autam madhim jaatee(n) jinasee bharam bhavai sa(n)saar ||
High and low, social class and status - the world wanders lost in superstition.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ਤਤੁ ਵਖਾਣੀ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਈ ॥
a(n)mirat baanee tat vakhaanee giaan dhiaan vich aaiee ||
The Ambrosial Word of Gurbani proclaims the essence of reality. Spiritual wisdom and meditation are contained within it.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਖੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤੀ ਸੁਰਤਂੀ ਕਰਮਿ ਧਿਆਈ ॥
gurmukh aakhee gurmukh jaatee surata(n)ee karam dhiaaiee ||
The Gurmukhs chant it, and the Gurmukhs realize it. Intuitively aware, they meditate on it.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਾਜਿ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਖੈ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ॥
hukam saaj hukamai vich rakhai hukamai a(n)dhar vekhai ||
By the Hukam of His Command, He formed the Universe, and in His Hukam, He keeps it. By His Hukam, He keeps it under His Gaze.
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਗਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੁਟੈ ਤਾਂ ਕੋ ਲਿਖੀਐ ਲੇਖੈ ॥੧॥
naanak agahu haumai tuTai taa(n) ko likheeaai lekhai ||1||
O Nanak, if the mortal shatters his ego before he departs, as it is pre-ordained, then he is approved. ||1||

First Mehla:
ਬੇਦੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੇ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਪਾਪੁ ਸੁਰਗ ਨਰਕ ਕਾ ਬੀਉ ॥
bedh pukaare pu(n)n paap surag narak kaa beeau ||
The Vedas proclaim that vice and virtue are the seeds of heaven and hell.
ਜੋ ਬੀਜੈ ਸੋ ਉਗਵੈ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੀਉ ॥
jo beejai so ugavai khaa(n)dhaa jaanai jeeau ||
Whatever is planted, shall grow. The soul eats the fruits of its actions, and understands.
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸਲਾਹੇ ਵਡਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਚੋ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
giaan salaahe vaddaa kar sacho sachaa naau ||
Whoever praises spiritual wisdom as great, becomes truthful in the True Name.
ਸਚੁ ਬੀਜੈ ਸਚੁ ਉਗਵੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਈਐ ਥਾਉ ॥
sach beejai sach ugavai dharageh paieeaai thaau ||
When Truth is planted, Truth grows. In the Court of the Lord, you shall find your place of honor.
