ਕਾਗਦ ਕੋਟੁ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਹੈ ਬਪੁਰੋ ਰੰਗਨਿ ਚਿਹਨ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
kaagadh koT ih jag hai bapuro ra(n)gan chihan chaturaiee ||
This wretched world is a fortress of paper, of color and form and clever tricks.
ਨਾਨੑੀ ਸੀ ਬੂੰਦ ਪਵਨੁ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਵੈ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਖਿਨੁ ਤਾੲਂੀ ॥੪॥
naan(h)ee see boo(n)dh pavan pat khovai janam marai khin taae(n)ee ||4||
A tiny drop of water or a little puff of wind destroys its glory; in an instant, its life is ended. ||4||
ਨਦੀ ਉਪਕੰਠਿ ਜੈਸੇ ਘਰੁ ਤਰਵਰੁ ਸਰਪਨਿ ਘਰੁ ਘਰ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
nadhee upaka(n)Th jaise ghar taravar sarapan ghar ghar maahee ||
It is like a tree-house near the bank of a river, with a serpent's den in that house.
ਉਲਟੀ ਨਦੀ ਕਹਾਂ ਘਰੁ ਤਰਵਰੁ ਸਰਪਨਿ ਡਸੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਂਹੀ ॥੫॥
aulaTee nadhee kahaa(n) ghar taravar sarapan ddasai dhoojaa man maa(n)hee ||5||
When the river overflows, what happens to the tree house? The snake bites, like duality in the mind. ||5||
ਗਾਰੁੜ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਰੀ ॥
gaaruR gur giaan dhiaan gur bachanee bikhiaa gurmat jaaree ||
Through the magic spell of the Guru's spiritual wisdom, and meditation on the Word of the Guru's Teachings, vice and corruption are burnt away.
ਮਨ ਤਨ ਹੇਂਵ ਭਏ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਿਰਾਰੀ ॥੬॥
man tan he(n)v bhe sach paiaa har kee bhagat niraaree ||6||
The mind and body are cooled and soothed and Truth is obtained, through the wondrous and unique devotional worship of the Lord. ||6||
ਜੇਤੀ ਹੈ ਤੇਤੀ ਤੁਧੁ ਜਾਚੈ ਤੂ ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆਂ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥
jetee hai tetee tudh jaachai too sarab jeeaa(n) dhiaalaa ||
All that exists begs of You; You are merciful to all beings.
ਤੁਮੑਰੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥੭॥
tum(h)ree saran pare pat raakhahu saach milai gopaalaa ||7||
I seek Your Sanctuary; please save my honor, O Lord of the World, and bless me with Truth. ||7||
ਬਾਧੀ ਧੰਧਿ ਅੰਧ ਨਹੀ ਸੂਝੈ ਬਧਿਕ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
baadhee dha(n)dh a(n)dh nahee soojhai badhik karam kamaavai ||
Bound in worldly affairs and entanglements, the blind one does not understand; he acts like a murderous butcher.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਸੂਝਸਿ ਬੂਝਸਿ ਸਚ ਮਨਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੮॥
satigur milai ta soojhas boojhas sach man giaan samaavai ||8||
But if he meets with the True Guru, then he comprehends and understands, and his mind is imbued with true spiritual wisdom. ||8||
ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਦੇਹ ਸਾਚ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਾਚੀ ਮੈ ਪੂਛਉ ਗੁਰੁ ਅਪਨਾ ॥
niragun dheh saach bin kaachee mai poochhau gur apanaa ||
Without the Truth, this worthless body is false; I have consulted my Guru on this.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਚੇ ਜਗੁ ਸੁਪਨਾ ॥੯॥੨॥
naanak so prabh prabhoo dhikhaavai bin saache jag supanaa ||9||2||
O Nanak, that God has revealed God to me; without the Truth, all the world is just a dream. ||9||2||
ਮਲਾਰ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
malaar mahalaa pehilaa ||
Malaar, First Mehla:
ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਮੀਨ ਜਲ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਸਾਰਿੰਗ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਈ ॥੧॥
chaatirak meen jal hee te sukh paaveh saari(n)g sabadh suhaiee ||1||
The rainbird and the fish find peace in water; the deer is pleased by the sound of the bell. ||1||
ਰੈਨਿ ਬਬੀਹਾ ਬੋਲਿਓ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
rain babeehaa bolio meree maiee ||1|| rahaau ||
The rainbird chirps in the night, O my mother. ||1||Pause||
ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਉਲਟੈ ਕਬਹੂ ਜੋ ਤੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਈ ॥੨॥
pria siau preet na ulaTai kabahoo jo tai bhaavai saiee ||2||
O my Beloved, my love for You shall never end, if it is Your Will. ||2||
ਨੀਦ ਗਈ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਨਿ ਥਾਕੀ ਸਚ ਮਤਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੩॥
needh giee haumai tan thaakee sach mat ridhai samaiee ||3||
Sleep is gone, and egotism is exhausted from my body; my heart is permeated with the Teachings of Truth. ||3||
ਰੂਖਂੀ ਬਿਰਖਂੀ ਊਡਉ ਭੂਖਾ ਪੀਵਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਭਾਈ ॥੪॥
rookha(n)ee birakha(n)ee uooddau bhookhaa peevaa naam subhaiee ||4||
Flying among the trees and plants, I remain hungry; lovingly drinking in the Naam, the Name of the Lord, I am satisfied. ||4||
ਲੋਚਨ ਤਾਰ ਲਲਤਾ ਬਿਲਲਾਤੀ ਦਰਸਨ ਪਿਆਸ ਰਜਾਈ ॥੫॥
lochan taar lalataa bilalaatee dharasan piaas rajaiee ||5||
I stare at You, and my tongue cries out to You; I am so thirsty for the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan. ||5||
ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਕਰੀ ਤੇਤਾ ਤਨੁ ਤਾਪੈ ਕਾਪਰੁ ਅੰਗਿ ਨ ਸੁਹਾਈ ॥੬॥
pria bin seegaar karee tetaa tan taapai kaapar a(n)g na suhaiee ||6||
Without my Beloved, the more I decorate myself, the more my body burns; these clothes do not look good on my body. ||6||
ਅਪਨੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਇਕੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਂਉ ਬਿਨ ਮਿਲੇ ਨਂੀਦ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੭॥
apane piaare bin ik khin reh na saka(n)au bin mile na(n)eedh na paiee ||7||
Without my Beloved, I cannot survive even for an instant; without meeting Him, I cannot sleep. ||7||
ਪਿਰੁ ਨਜੀਕਿ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਬਪੁੜੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਦਿਖਾਈ ॥੮॥
pir najeek na boojhai bapuRee satigur dheeaa dhikhaiee ||8||
Her Husband Lord is nearby, but the wretched bride does not know it. The True Guru reveals Him to her. ||8||
ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੯॥
sahaj miliaa tab hee sukh paiaa tirasanaa sabadh bujhaiee ||9||
When she meets Him with intuitive ease, she finds peace; the Word of the Shabad quenches the fire of desire. ||9||
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੧੦॥੩॥
kahu naanak tujh te man maaniaa keemat kahan na jaiee ||10||3||
Says Nanak, through You, O Lord, my mind is pleased and appeased; I cannot express Your worth. ||10||3||
ਮਲਾਰ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਅਸਟਪਦੀਆ ਘਰੁ ੨
malaar mahalaa pehilaa asaTapadheeaa ghar doojaa
Malaar, First Mehla, Ashtpadheeyaa, Second House:
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ikOankaar satigur prasaadh ||
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਅਖਲੀ ਊਂਡੀ ਜਲੁ ਭਰ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
akhalee uoo(n)ddee jal bhar naal ||
The earth bends under the weight of the water,
ਡੂਗਰੁ ਊਚਉ ਗੜੁ ਪਾਤਾਲਿ ॥
ddoogar uoochau gaR paataal ||
the lofty mountains and the caverns of the underworld.
ਸਾਗਰੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
saagar seetal gur sabadh veechaar ||
Contemplating the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the oceans become calm.
ਮਾਰਗੁ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
maarag mukataa haumai maar ||1||
The path of liberation is found by subduing the ego. ||1||
ਮੈ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੀ ਜੋਤਿ ॥
mai a(n)dhule naavai kee jot ||
I am blind; I seek the Light of the Name.
ਨਾਮ ਅਧਾਰਿ ਚਲਾ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭੈ ਭੇਤਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naam adhaar chalaa gur kai bhai bhet ||1|| rahaau ||
I take the Support of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. I walk on the path of mystery of the Guru's Fear. ||1||Pause||
