ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਜੋ ਮਾਨਿਓ ਦੇਹ ਸੋ ਤਉ ਤੇਰਉ ਹੋਇ ਹੈ ਖੇਹ ॥
asathir jo maanio dheh so tau terau hoi hai kheh ||
You believed that this body was permanent, but it shall turn to dust.
ਕਿਉ ਨ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੇਹਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਨਿਲਾਜ ਰੇ ॥੧॥
kiau na har ko naam leh moorakh nilaaj re ||1||
Why don't you chant the Name of the Lord, you shameless fool? ||1||
ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੀਏ ਆਨਿ ਛਾਡਿ ਦੇ ਤੈ ਮਨ ਕੋ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
raam bhagat he'ee aan chhaadd dhe tai man ko maan ||
Let devotional worship of the Lord enter into your heart, and abandon the intellectualism of your mind.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਇਹ ਬਖਾਨਿ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਬਿਰਾਜੁ ਰੇ ॥੨॥੪॥
naanak jan ieh bakhaan jag meh biraaj re ||2||4||
O Servant Nanak, this is the way to live in the world. ||2||4||

ਸਲੋਕ ਸਹਸਕ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
salok sahasakiratee mahalaa pehilaa ||
Shalok Sehskritee, First Mehla:
ਪੜਿੑ ਪੁਸ੍ਤਕ ਸੰਧਿਆ ਬਾਦੰ ॥
paRi(h) pustak sa(n)dhiaa baadha(n) ||
You study the scriptures, say your prayers and argue;
ਸਿਲ ਪੂਜਸਿ ਬਗੁਲ ਸਮਾਧੰ ॥
sil poojas bagul samaadha(n) ||
you worship stones and sit like a crane, pretending to meditate.
ਮੁਖਿ ਝੂਠੁ ਬਿਭੂਖਨ ਸਾਰੰ ॥
mukh jhooTh bibhookhan saara(n) ||
You speak lies and well-ornamented falsehood,
ਤ੍ਰੈਪਾਲ ਤਿਹਾਲ ਬਿਚਾਰੰ ॥
traipaal tihaal bichaara(n) ||
and recite your daily prayers three times a day.
ਗਲਿ ਮਾਲਾ ਤਿਲਕ ਲਿਲਾਟੰ ॥
gal maalaa tilak lilaaTa(n) ||
The mala is around your neck, and the sacred tilak mark is on your forehead.
ਦੁਇ ਧੋਤੀ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਕਪਾਟੰ ॥
dhui dhotee basatr kapaaTa(n) ||
You wear two loin cloths, and keep your head covered.
ਜੋ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰ ਕਰਮੰ ॥
jo jaanas brahama(n) karama(n) ||
If you know God and the nature of karma,
ਸਭ ਫੋਕਟ ਨਿਸਚੈ ਕਰਮੰ ॥
sabh fokaT nisachai karama(n) ||
you know that all these rituals and beliefs are useless.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਸਚੌ ਧੵਿਾਵੈ ॥
kahu naanak nisachau dhiyeaavai ||
Says Nanak, meditate on the Lord with faith.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਟ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
bin satigur baaT na paavai ||1||
Without the True Guru, no one finds the Way. ||1||
ਨਿਹਫਲੰ ਤਸੵ ਜਨਮਸੵ ਜਾਵਦ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨ ਬਿੰਦਤੇ ॥
nihafala(n) tasaye janamasaye jaavadh braham na bi(n)dhate ||
The mortal's life is fruitless, as long as he does not know God.
ਸਾਗਰੰ ਸੰਸਾਰਸੵ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਤਰਹਿ ਕੇ ॥
saagara(n) sa(n)saarasaye gur parasaadhee tareh ke ||
Only a few, by Guru's Grace, cross over the world-ocean.
ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਹੈ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
karan kaaran samarath hai kahu naanak beechaar ||
The Creator, the Cause of causes, is All-powerful. Thus speaks Nanak, after deep deliberation.
ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕਰਤੇ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਕਲ ਰਖੀ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
kaaran karate vas hai jin kal rakhee dhaar ||2||
The Creation is under the control of the Creator. By His Power, He sustains and supports it. ||2||
ਜੋਗ ਸਬਦੰ ਗਿਆਨ ਸਬਦੰ ਬੇਦ ਸਬਦੰ ਤ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਹ ॥
jog sabadha(n) giaan sabadha(n) bedh sabadha(n) ta braahamaneh ||
The Shabad is Yoga, the Shabad is spiritual wisdom; the Shabad is the Vedas for the Brahmin.
ਖੵਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਬਦੰ ਸੂਰ ਸਬਦੰ ਸੂਦ੍ਰ ਸਬਦੰ ਪਰਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਤਹ ॥
khayetree sabadha(n) soor sabadha(n) soodhr sabadha(n) paraa kirateh ||
The Shabad is heroic bravery for the Khshaatriya; the Shabad is service to others for the Soodra.
ਸਰਬ ਸਬਦੰ ਤ ਏਕ ਸਬਦੰ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਭੇਉ ॥
sarab sabadha(n) ta ek sabadha(n) je ko jaanas bheau ||
The Shabad for all is the Shabad, the Word of the One God, for one who knows this secret.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਦਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਸੋਈ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦੇਉ ॥੩॥
naanak taa ko dhaas hai soiee nira(n)jan dheau ||3||
Nanak is the slave of the Divine, Immaculate Lord. ||3||
ਏਕ ਕ੍ਰਿਸ੍ਨੰ ਤ ਸਰਬ ਦੇਵਾ ਦੇਵ ਦੇਵਾ ਤ ਆਤਮਹ ॥ ਆਤਮੰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਬਾਸ੍ਵਦੇਵਸੵ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਭੇਵ ॥
ek kirasana(n) ta sarab dhevaa dhev dhevaa ta aatameh || aatama(n) sree baasavaidhevasaye je koiee jaanas bhev ||
The One Lord is the Divinity of all divinities. He is the Divinity of the soul.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਦਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਸੋਈ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ॥੪॥
naanak taa ko dhaas hai soiee nira(n)jan dhev ||4||
Nanak is the slave of that one who knows the Secrets of the soul and the Supreme Lord God. He is the Divine Immaculate Lord Himself. ||4||

ਕਤੰਚ ਮਾਤਾ ਕਤੰਚ ਪਿਤਾ ਕਤੰਚ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਸੁਤਹ ॥
kata(n)ch maataa kata(n)ch pitaa kata(n)ch banitaa binodh suteh ||
Who is the mother, and who is the father? Who is the son, and what is the pleasure of marriage?
ਕਤੰਚ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਮੀਤ ਹਿਤ ਬੰਧਵ ਕਤੰਚ ਮੋਹ ਕੁਟੰਬੵਤੇ ॥
kata(n)ch bhraat meet hit ba(n)dhav kata(n)ch moh kuTa(n)bayete ||
Who is the brother, friend, companion and relative? Who is emotionally attached to the family?
ਕਤੰਚ ਚਪਲ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਰੂਪੰ ਪੇਖੰਤੇ ਤਿਆਗੰ ਕਰੋਤਿ ॥
kata(n)ch chapal mohanee roopa(n) pekha(n)te tiaaga(n) karot ||
Who is restlessly attached to beauty? It leaves, as soon as we see it.
ਰਹੰਤ ਸੰਗ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਸਿਮਰਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਬਧੵੰ ਅਚੁਤ ਤਨਹ ॥੧॥
raha(n)t sa(n)g bhagavaan simaran naanak labadhaye(n) achut taneh ||1||
Only the meditative remembrance of God remains with us. O Nanak, it brings the blessings of the Saints, the sons of the Imperishable Lord. ||1||
