First Mehla
ਹਕੁ ਪਰਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਉਸੁ ਸੂਅਰ ਉਸੁ ਗਾਇ ॥
hak paraiaa naanakaa us sooar us gai ||
: To take what rightfully belongs to another, is like a Muslim eating pork, or a Hindu eating beef.
ਗੁਰੁ ਪੀਰੁ ਹਾਮਾ ਤਾ ਭਰੇ ਜਾ ਮੁਰਦਾਰੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥
gur peer haamaa taa bhare jaa muradhaar na khai ||
Our Guru, our Spiritual Guide, stands by us, if we do not eat those carcasses.
ਗਲੀ ਭਿਸਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਈਐ ਛੁਟੈ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
galee bhisat na jaieeaai chhuTai sach kamai ||
By mere talk, people do not earn passage to Heaven. Salvation comes only from the practice of Truth.
ਮਾਰਣ ਪਾਹਿ ਹਰਾਮ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਹਲਾਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
maaran paeh haraam meh hoi halaal na jai ||
By adding spices to forbidden foods, they are not made acceptable.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗਲੀ ਕੂੜੀਈ ਕੂੜੋ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥
naanak galee kooReeiee kooRo palai pai ||2||
O Nanak, from false talk, only falsehood is obtained. ||2||

First Mehla:
ਪੰਜਿ ਨਿਵਾਜਾ ਵਖਤ ਪੰਜਿ ਪੰਜਾ ਪੰਜੇ ਨਾਉ ॥
pa(n)j nivaajaa vakhat pa(n)j pa(n)jaa pa(n)je naau ||
There are five prayers and five times of day for prayer; the five have five names.
ਪਹਿਲਾ ਸਚੁ ਹਲਾਲ ਦੁਇ ਤੀਜਾ ਖੈਰ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥
pahilaa sach halaal dhui teejaa khair khudhai ||
Let the first be truthfulness, the second honest living, and the third charity in the Name of God.
ਚਉਥੀ ਨੀਅਤਿ ਰਾਸਿ ਮਨੁ ਪੰਜਵੀ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਨਾਇ ॥
chauthee neeat raas man pa(n)javee sifat sanai ||
Let the fourth be good will to all, and the fifth the praise of the Lord.
ਕਰਣੀ ਕਲਮਾ ਆਖਿ ਕੈ ਤਾ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ਸਦਾਇ ॥
karanee kalamaa aakh kai taa musalamaan sadhai ||
Repeat the prayer of good deeds, and then, you may call yourself a Muslim.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇਤੇ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਕੂੜੈ ਕੂੜੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੩॥
naanak jete kooRiaar kooRai kooRee pai ||3||
O Nanak, the false obtain falsehood, and only falsehood. ||3||

Pauree:
ਇਕਿ ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਵਣਜਦੇ ਇਕਿ ਕਚੈ ਦੇ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥
eik ratan padhaarath vanajadhe ik kachai dhe vaapaaraa ||
Some trade in priceless jewels, while others deal in mere glass.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਤੁਠੈ ਪਾਈਅਨਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਰਤਨ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥
satigur tuThai paieean a(n)dhar ratan bha(n)ddaaraa ||
When the True Guru is pleased, we find the treasure of the jewel, deep within the self.
ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਲਧਿਆ ਅੰਧੇ ਭਉਕਿ ਮੁਏ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਾ ॥
vin gur kinai na ladhiaa a(n)dhe bhauk mue kooRiaaraa ||
Without the Guru, no one has found this treasure. The blind and the false have died in their endless wanderings.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਨਾ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
manmukh dhoojai pach mue naa boojheh veechaaraa ||
The self-willed manmukhs putrefy and die in duality. They do not understand contemplative meditation.
ਇਕਸੁ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਕਿਸੁ ਅਗੈ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ॥
eikas baajhahu dhoojaa ko nahee kis agai kareh pukaaraa ||
Without the One Lord, there is no other at all. Unto whom should they complain?
ਇਕਿ ਨਿਰਧਨ ਸਦਾ ਭਉਕਦੇ ਇਕਨਾ ਭਰੇ ਤੁਜਾਰਾ ॥
eik niradhan sadhaa bhaukadhe ikanaa bhare tujaaraa ||
Some are destitute, and wander around endlessly, while others have storehouses of wealth.
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਹੋਰੁ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਹੋਰੁ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਛਾਰਾ ॥
vin naavai hor dhan naahee hor bikhiaa sabh chhaaraa ||
Without God's Name, there is no other wealth. Everything else is just poison and ashes.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰੇ ਆਪਿ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੭॥
naanak aap karaae kare aap hukam savaaranahaaraa ||7||
O Nanak, the Lord Himself acts, and causes others to act; by the Hukam of His Command, we are embellished and exalted. ||7||
ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, First Mehla:
ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ਕਹਾਵਣੁ ਮੁਸਕਲੁ ਜਾ ਹੋਇ ਤਾ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
musalamaan kahaavan musakal jaa hoi taa musalamaan kahaavai ||
It is difficult to be called a Muslim; if one is truly a Muslim, then he may be called one.
ਅਵਲਿ ਅਉਲਿ ਦੀਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਿਠਾ ਮਸਕਲ ਮਾਨਾ ਮਾਲੁ ਮੁਸਾਵੈ ॥
aval aaul dheen kar miThaa masakal maanaa maal musaavai ||
First, let him savor the religion of the Prophet as sweet; then, let his pride of his possessions be scraped away.
ਹੋਇ ਮੁਸਲਿਮੁ ਦੀਨ ਮੁਹਾਣੈ ਮਰਣ ਜੀਵਣ ਕਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥
hoi musalim dheen muhaanai maran jeevan kaa bharam chukaavai ||
Becoming a true Muslim, a disciple of the faith of Mohammed, let him put aside the delusion of death and life.
ਰਬ ਕੀ ਰਜਾਇ ਮੰਨੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਪਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਮੰਨੇ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥
rab kee rajai ma(n)ne sir upar karataa ma(n)ne aap gavaavai ||
As he submits to God's Will, and surrenders to the Creator, he is rid of selfishness and conceit.
ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਮਿਹਰੰਮਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
tau naanak sarab jeeaa mihara(n)mat hoi ta musalamaan kahaavai ||1||
And when, O Nanak, he is merciful to all beings, only then shall he be called a Muslim. ||1||
ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥

Fourth Mehla:
ਪਰਹਰਿ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਝੂਠੁ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਤਜਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥
parahar kaam karodh jhooTh ni(n)dhaa taj maiaa aha(n)kaar chukaavai ||
Renounce sexual desire, anger, falsehood and slander; forsake Maya and eliminate egotistical pride.
ਤਜਿ ਕਾਮੁ ਕਾਮਿਨੀ ਮੋਹੁ ਤਜੈ ਤਾ ਅੰਜਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
taj kaam kaaminee moh tajai taa a(n)jan maeh nira(n)jan paavai ||
Renounce sexual desire and promiscuity, and give up emotional attachment. Only then shall you obtain the Immaculate Lord amidst the darkness of the world.
ਤਜਿ ਮਾਨੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸੁਤ ਦਾਰਾ ਤਜਿ ਪਿਆਸ ਆਸ ਰਾਮ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
taj maan abhimaan preet sut dhaaraa taj piaas aas raam liv laavai ||
Renounce selfishness, conceit and arrogant pride, and your love for your children and spouse. Abandon your thirsty hopes and desires, and embrace love for the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
naanak saachaa man vasai saach sabadh har naam samaavai ||2||
O Nanak, the True One shall come to dwell in your mind. Through the True Word of the Shabad, you shall be absorbed in the Name of the Lord. ||2||
ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:
ਰਾਜੇ ਰਯਤਿ ਸਿਕਦਾਰ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਰਹਸੀਓ ॥
raaje rayat sikadhaar koi na rahaseeo ||
Neither the kings, nor their subjects, nor the leaders shall remain.
ਹਟ ਪਟਣ ਬਾਜਾਰ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਢਹਸੀਓ ॥
haT paTan baajaar hukamee ddahaseeo ||
The shops, the cities and the streets shall eventually disintegrate, by the Hukam of the Lord's Command.
ਪਕੇ ਬੰਕ ਦੁਆਰ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪਣੇ ॥
pake ba(n)k dhuaar moorakh jaanai aapane ||
Those solid and beautiful mansions-the fools think that they belong to them.
ਦਰਬਿ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਰੀਤੇ ਇਕਿ ਖਣੇ ॥
dharab bhare bha(n)ddaar reete ik khane ||
The treasure-houses, filled with wealth, shall be emptied out in an instant.
ਤਾਜੀ ਰਥ ਤੁਖਾਰ ਹਾਥੀ ਪਾਖਰੇ ॥ ਬਾਗ ਮਿਲਖ ਘਰ ਬਾਰ ਕਿਥੈ ਸਿ ਆਪਣੇ ॥ ਤੰਬੂ ਪਲੰਘ ਨਿਵਾਰ ਸਰਾਇਚੇ ਲਾਲਤੀ ॥
taajee rath tukhaar haathee paakhare || baag milakh ghar baar kithai s aapane || ta(n)boo pala(n)gh nivaar saraiche laalatee ||
The horses, chariots, camels and elephants, with all their decorations; the gardens, lands, houses, tents, soft beds and satin pavilions-Oh, where are those things, which they believe to be their own?
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ਸਿਨਾਖਤੁ ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ॥੮॥
naanak sach dhaataar sinaakhat kudharatee ||8||
O Nanak, the True One is the Giver of all; He is revealed through His All-powerful Creative Nature. ||8||
ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, First Mehla:
ਨਦੀਆ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਧੇਣਵਾ ਸੁੰਮ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਦੁਧੁ ਘੀਉ ॥
nadheeaa hoveh dhenavaa su(n)m hoveh dhudh gheeau ||
If the rivers became cows, giving milk, and the spring water became milk and ghee;
ਸਗਲੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਸਕਰ ਹੋਵੈ ਖੁਸੀ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਜੀਉ ॥
sagalee dharatee sakar hovai khusee kare nit jeeau ||
If all the earth became sugar, to continually excite the mind;
