Shalok, Fifth Mehla:
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ikOankaar satigur prasaadh ||
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਰਤੇ ਸੇਈ ਜਿ ਮੁਖੁ ਨ ਮੋੜੰਨਿੑ ਜਿਨੑੀ ਸਿਞਾਤਾ ਸਾਈ ॥
rate seiee j mukh na moRa(n)ni(h) jin(h)ee sin(j)aataa saiee ||
They alone are imbued with the Lord, who do not turn their faces away from Him - they realize Him.
ਝੜਿ ਝੜਿ ਪਵਦੇ ਕਚੇ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਜਿਨੑਾ ਕਾਰਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥੧॥
jhaR jhaR pavadhe kache birahee jin(h)aa kaar na aaiee ||1||
The false, immature lovers do not know the way of love, and so they fall. ||1||
ਧਣੀ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਪਾਟ ਪਟੰਬਰ ਭਾਹੀ ਸੇਤੀ ਜਾਲੇ ॥
dhanee vihoonaa paaT paTa(n)bar bhaahee setee jaale ||
Without my Master, I will burn my silk and satin clothes in the fire.
ਧੂੜੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਲੁਡੰਦੜੀ ਸੋਹਾਂ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੈ ਸਹ ਨਾਲੇ ॥੨॥
dhooRee vich ludda(n)dhaRee sohaa(n) naanak tai seh naale ||2||
Even rolling in the dust, I look beautiful, O Nanak, if my Husband Lord is with me. ||2||
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅਰਾਧੀਐ ਨਾਮਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ॥
gur kai sabadh araadheeaai naam ra(n)g bairaag ||
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, I worship and adore the Naam, with love and balanced detachment.
ਜੀਤੇ ਪੰਚ ਬੈਰਾਈਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਫਲ ਮਾਰੂ ਇਹੁ ਰਾਗੁ ॥੩॥
jeete pa(n)ch bairaieeaa naanak safal maaroo ih raag ||3||
When the five enemies are overcome, O Nanak, this musical measure of Raga Maaroo becomes fruitful. ||3||
ਜਾਂ ਮੂੰ ਇਕੁ ਤ ਲਖ ਤਉ ਜਿਤੀ ਪਿਨਣੇ ਦਰਿ ਕਿਤੜੇ ॥
jaa(n) moo(n) ik ta lakh tau jitee pinane dhar kitaRe ||
When I have the One Lord, I have tens of thousands. Otherwise, people like me beg from door to door.
ਬਾਮਣੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਗਇਓ ਜਨੰਮੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤੋ ਸੋ ਵਿਸਰੇ ॥੪॥
baaman birathaa gio jana(n)m jin keeto so visare ||4||
O Brahmin, your life has passed away uselessly; you have forgotten the One who created you. ||4||
ਸੋਰਠਿ ਸੋ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੀਐ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਫੀਕਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
soraTh so ras peejeeaai kabahoo na feekaa hoi ||
In Raga Sorat'h, drink in this sublime essence, which never loses its taste.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਈਅਹਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੋਇ ॥੫॥
naanak raam naam gun gaie'eeh dharageh niramal soi ||5||
O Nanak, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord's Name, one's reputation is immaculate in the Court of the Lord. ||5||
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਰਖੇ ਆਪਿ ਤਿਨ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮਾਰਈ ॥
jo prabh rakhe aap tin koi na maariee ||
No one can kill those whom God Himself protects.
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰਈ ॥
a(n)dhar naam nidhaan sadhaa gun saariee ||
The treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is within them. They cherish His Glorious Virtues forever.
ਏਕਾ ਟੇਕ ਅਗੰਮ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਧਾਰਈ ॥
ekaa Tek aga(n)m man tan prabh dhaariee ||
They take the Support of the One, the Inaccessible Lord; they enshrine God in their mind and body.
ਲਗਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਕੋ ਨ ਉਤਾਰਈ ॥
lagaa ra(n)g apaar ko na utaariee ||
They are imbued with the Love of the Infinite Lord, and no one can wipe it away.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਰਈ ॥
gurmukh har gun gai sahaj sukh saariee ||
The Gurmukhs sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord; they obtain the most excellent celestial peace and poise.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਉਰਿ ਹਾਰਈ ॥੬॥
naanak naam nidhaan ridhai ur haariee ||6||
O Nanak, they enshrine the treasure of the Naam in their hearts. ||6||
ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਚੰਗਾ ਮਾਨਿ ਦੁਯੀ ਗਣਤ ਲਾਹਿ ॥
kare su cha(n)gaa maan dhuyee ganat laeh ||
Whatever God does, accept that as good; leave behind all other judgements.
ਅਪਣੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ਆਪੇ ਲੈਹੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
apanee nadhar nihaal aape laih lai ||
He shall cast His Glance of Grace, and attach you to Himself.
ਜਨ ਦੇਹੁ ਮਤੀ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
jan dheh matee upadhes vichahu bharam jai ||
Instruct yourself with the Teachings, and doubt will depart from within.
ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਸੋਈ ਸਭ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
jo dhur likhiaa lekh soiee sabh kamai ||
Everyone does that which is pre-ordained by destiny.
ਸਭੁ ਕਛੁ ਤਿਸ ਦੈ ਵਸਿ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
sabh kachh tis dhai vas dhoojee naeh jai ||
Everything is under His control; there is no other place at all.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖ ਅਨਦ ਭਏ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਮੰਨਿ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੭॥
naanak sukh anadh bhe prabh kee ma(n)n rajai ||7||
Nanak is in peace and bliss, accepting the Will of God. ||7||
ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਜਿਨ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਸੇਈ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥
gur pooraa jin simariaa seiee bhe nihaal ||
Those who meditate in remembrance on the Perfect Guru, are exalted and uplifted.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਰਾਧਣਾ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਆਵੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੮॥
naanak naam araadhanaa kaaraj aavai raas ||8||
O Nanak, dwelling on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, all affairs are resolved. ||8||
ਪਾਪੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਏ ਹਾਇ ॥
paapee karam kamaavadhe karadhe haae hai ||
The sinners act, and generate bad karma, and then they weep and wail.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਉ ਮਥਨਿ ਮਾਧਾਣੀਆ ਤਿਉ ਮਥੇ ਧ੍ਰਮ ਰਾਇ ॥੯॥
naanak jiau mathan maadhaaneeaa tiau mathe dhram rai ||9||
O Nanak, just as the churning stick churns the butter, so does the Righteous Judge of Dharma churn them. ||9||
ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਸਾਜਨਾ ਜਨਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਜੀਤਿ ॥
naam dhiaain saajanaa janam padhaarath jeet ||
Meditating on the Naam, O friend, the treasure of life is won.
ਨਾਨਕ ਧਰਮ ਐਸੇ ਚਵਹਿ ਕੀਤੋ ਭਵਨੁ ਪੁਨੀਤ ॥੧੦॥
naanak dharam aaise chaveh keeto bhavan puneet ||10||
O Nanak, speaking in Righteousness, one's world becomes sanctified. ||10||
ਖੁਭੜੀ ਕੁਥਾਇ ਮਿਠੀ ਗਲਣਿ ਕੁਮੰਤ੍ਰੀਆ ॥
khubhaRee kuthai miThee galan kuma(n)treeaa ||
I am stuck in an evil place, trusting the sweet words of an evil advisor.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇਈ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿਨਾ ਭਾਗੁ ਮਥਾਹਿ ॥੧੧॥
naanak seiee ubare jinaa bhaag mathaeh ||11||
O Nanak, they alone are saved, who have such good destiny inscribed upon their foreheads. ||11||
ਸੁਤੜੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਸਵੰਨਿੑ ਜੋ ਰਤੇ ਸਹ ਆਪਣੈ ॥
sutaRe sukhee sava(n)ni(h) jo rate seh aapanai ||
They alone sleep and dream in peace, who are imbued with the Love of their Husband Lord.
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਛੋਹਾ ਧਣੀ ਸਉ ਅਠੇ ਪਹਰ ਲਵੰਨਿੑ ॥੧੨॥
prem vichhohaa dhanee sau aThe pahar lava(n)ni(h) ||12||
Those who have been separated from the Love of their Master, scream and cry twenty-four hours a day. ||12||
ਸੁਤੜੇ ਅਸੰਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਝੂਠੀ ਕਾਰਣੇ ॥
sutaRe asa(n)kh maiaa jhooThee kaarane ||
Millions are asleep, in the false illusion of Maya.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਜਾਗੰਨਿੑ ਜਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਚਾਰਣੇ ॥੧੩॥
naanak se jaaga(n)ni(h) j rasanaa naam uchaarane ||13||
O Nanak, they alone are awake and aware, who chant the Naam with their tongues. ||13||
ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਪੇਖਿ ਭੁਲਣੇ ਵੁਠੇ ਨਗਰ ਗੰਧ੍ਰਬ ॥
mirag tisanaa pekh bhulane vuThe nagar ga(n)dhrab ||
Seeing the mirage, the optical illusion, the people are confused and deluded.
ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਫਬ ॥੧੪॥
jinee sach araadhiaa naanak man tan fab ||14||
Those who worship and adore the True Lord, O Nanak, their minds and bodies are beautiful. ||14||
ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਣ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਥ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥
patit udhaaran paarabraham sa(n)mrath purakh apaar ||
The All-powerful Supreme Lord God, the Infinite Primal Being, is the Saving Grace of sinners.
