ਤਨਿ ਮਨਿ ਸੂਚੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਸੁ ਚੀਤਿ ॥
tan man soochai saachu su cheet ||
Their bodies and minds are purified, as they enshrine the True Lord in their consciousness.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਨੀਤਾ ਨੀਤਿ ॥੮॥੨॥
naanak har bhaj neetaa neet ||8||2||
O Nanak, meditate on the Lord, each and every day. ||8||2||
ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
gauRee guaareree mahalaa pehilaa ||
Gauree Gwaarayree, First Mehla:
ਨਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
naa man marai na kaaraj hoi ||
The mind does not die, so the job is not accomplished.
ਮਨੁ ਵਸਿ ਦੂਤਾ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੋਇ ॥
man vas dhootaa dhuramat dhoi ||
The mind is under the power of the demons of evil intellect and duality.
ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਇਕੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
man maanai gur te ik hoi ||1||
But when the mind surrenders, through the Guru, it becomes one. ||1||
ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਰਾਮੁ ਗੁਣਹ ਵਸਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
niragun raam guneh vas hoi ||
The Lord is without attributes; the attributes of virtue are under His control.
ਆਪੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aap nivaar beechaare soi ||1|| rahaau ||
One who eliminates selfishness contemplates Him. ||1||Pause||
ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲੋ ਬਹੁ ਚਿਤੈ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ॥
man bhoolo bahu chitai vikaar ||
The deluded mind thinks of all sorts of corruption.
ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲੋ ਸਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਭਾਰੁ ॥
man bhoolo sir aavai bhaar ||
When the mind is deluded, the load of wickedness falls on the head.
ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
man maanai har eka(n)kaar ||2||
But when the mind surrenders to the Lord, it realizes the One and Only Lord. ||2||
ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
man bhoolo maiaa ghar jai ||
The deluded mind enters the house of Maya.
ਕਾਮਿ ਬਿਰੂਧਉ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਠਾਇ ॥
kaam biroodhau rahai na Thai ||
Engrossed in sexual desire, it does not remain steady.
ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਰਸਨ ਰਸਾਇ ॥੩॥
har bhaj praanee rasan rasai ||3||
O mortal, lovingly vibrate the Lord's Name with your tongue. ||3||
ਗੈਵਰ ਹੈਵਰ ਕੰਚਨ ਸੁਤ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
gaivar haivar ka(n)chan sut naaree ||
Elephants, horses, gold, children and spouses
ਬਹੁ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਪਿੜ ਚਾਲੈ ਹਾਰੀ ॥
bahu chi(n)taa piR chaalai haaree ||
in the anxious affairs of all these, people lose the game and depart.
ਜੂਐ ਖੇਲਣੁ ਕਾਚੀ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੪॥
jooaai khelan kaachee saaree ||4||
In the game of chess, their pieces do not reach their destination. ||4||
ਸੰਪਉ ਸੰਚੀ ਭਏ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥
sa(n)pau sa(n)chee bhe vikaar ||
They gather wealth, but only evil comes from it.
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਕ ਉਭੇ ਦਰਵਾਰਿ ॥
harakh sok ubhe dharavaar ||
Pleasure and pain stand in the doorway.
ਸੁਖੁ ਸਹਜੇ ਜਪਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥੫॥
sukh sahaje jap ridhai muraar ||5||
Intuitive peace comes by meditating on the Lord, within the heart. ||5||
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
nadhar kare taa mel milaae ||
When the Lord bestows His Glance of Grace, then He unites us in His Union.
ਗੁਣ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਅਉਗਣ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
gun sa(n)greh aaugan sabadh jalaae ||
Through the Word of the Shabad, merits are gathered in, and demerits are burned away.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੬॥
gurmukh naam padhaarath paae ||6||
The Gurmukh obtains the treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||6||
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭ ਦੂਖ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥
bin naavai sabh dhookh nivaas ||
Without the Name, all live in pain.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੂੜ ਮਾਇਆ ਚਿਤ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
manmukh mooR maiaa chit vaas ||
The consciousness of the foolish, self-willed manmukh is the dwelling place of Maya.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧੁਰਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਲਿਖਿਆਸੁ ॥੭॥
gurmukh giaan dhur karam likhiaas ||7||
The Gurmukh obtains spiritual wisdom, according to pre-ordained destiny. ||7||
ਮਨੁ ਚੰਚਲੁ ਧਾਵਤੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਧਾਵੈ ॥
man cha(n)chal dhaavat fun dhaavai ||
The fickle mind continuously runs after fleeting things.
ਸਾਚੇ ਸੂਚੇ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
saache sooche mail na bhaavai ||
The Pure True Lord is not pleased by filth.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੮॥੩॥
naanak gurmukh har gun gaavai ||8||3||
O Nanak, the Gurmukh sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||8||3||
ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Gauree Gwaarayree, First Mehla:
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤਿਆ ਨਹ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
haumai karatiaa neh sukh hoi ||
Acting in egotism, peace is not obtained.
ਮਨਮਤਿ ਝੂਠੀ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥
manmat jhooThee sachaa soi ||
The intellect of the mind is false; only the Lord is True.
ਸਗਲ ਬਿਗੂਤੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਦੋਇ ॥
sagal bigoote bhaavai dhoi ||
All who love duality are ruined.
ਸੋ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
so kamaavai dhur likhiaa hoi ||1||
People act as they are pre-ordained. ||1||
ਐਸਾ ਜਗੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜੂਆਰੀ ॥
aaisaa jag dhekhiaa jooaaree ||
I have seen the world to be such a gambler;
ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਮਾਗੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sabh sukh maagai naam bisaaree ||1|| rahaau ||
all beg for peace, but they forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਅਦਿਸਟੁ ਦਿਸੈ ਤਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
adhisaT dhisai taa kahiaa jai ||
If the Unseen Lord could be seen, then He could be described.
ਬਿਨੁ ਦੇਖੇ ਕਹਣਾ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
bin dhekhe kahanaa birathaa jai ||
Without seeing Him, all descriptions are useless.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
gurmukh dheesai sahaj subhai ||
The Gurmukh sees Him with intuitive ease.
ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੨॥
sevaa surat ek liv lai ||2||
So serve the One Lord, with loving awareness. ||2||
ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਂਗਤ ਦੁਖੁ ਆਗਲ ਹੋਇ ॥
sukh maa(n)gat dhukh aagal hoi ||
People beg for peace, but they receive severe pain.
ਸਗਲ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਹਾਰੁ ਪਰੋਇ ॥
sagal vikaaree haar paroi ||
They are all weaving a wreath of corruption.
ਏਕ ਬਿਨਾ ਝੂਠੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
ek binaa jhooThe mukat na hoi ||
You are false - without the One, there is no liberation.
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਦੇਖੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥
kar kar karataa dhekhai soi ||3||
The Creator created the creation, and He watches over it. ||3||
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥
tirasanaa agan sabadh bujhaae ||
The fire of desire is quenched by the Word of the Shabad.
ਦੂਜਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥
dhoojaa bharam sahaj subhaae ||
Duality and doubt are automatically eliminated.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
gurmatee naam ridhai vasaae ||
Following the Guru's Teachings, the Naam abides in the heart.
ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥੪॥
saachee baanee har gun gaae ||4||
Through the True Word of His Bani, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||4||
ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਚੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਾਉ ॥
tan meh saacho gurmukh bhaau ||
The True Lord abides within the body of that Gurmukh who enshrines love for Him.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਿਜ ਠਾਉ ॥
naam binaa naahee nij Thaau ||
Without the Naam, none obtain their own place.
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਰਾਇਣ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਰਾਉ ॥
prem parain preetam raau ||
The Beloved Lord King is dedicated to love.
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਨਾਉ ॥੫॥
nadhar kare taa boojhai naau ||5||
If He bestows His Glance of Grace, then we realize His Name. ||5||
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਰਬ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ॥
maiaa moh sarab ja(n)jaalaa ||
Emotional attachment to Maya is total entanglement.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕੁਚੀਲ ਕੁਛਿਤ ਬਿਕਰਾਲਾ ॥
manmukh kucheel kuchhit bikaraalaa ||
The self-willed manmukh is filthy, cursed and dreadful.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਚੂਕੈ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ॥
satigur seve chookai ja(n)jaalaa ||
Serving the True Guru, these entanglements are ended.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਲਾ ॥੬॥
a(n)mirat naam sadhaa sukh naalaa ||6||
In the Ambrosial Nectar of the Naam, you shall abide in lasting peace. ||6||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
gurmukh boojhai ek liv laae ||
The Gurmukhs understand the One Lord, and enshrine love for Him.
ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੈ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
nij ghar vaasai saach samaae ||
They dwell in the home of their own inner beings, and merge in the True Lord.
ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥
ja(n)man maranaa Thaak rahaae ||
The cycle of birth and death is ended.
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਮਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥੭॥
poore gur te ieh mat paae ||7||
This understanding is obtained from the Perfect Guru. ||7||
ਕਥਨੀ ਕਥਉ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਓਰੁ ॥
kathanee kathau na aavai or ||
Speaking the speech, there is no end to it.
