ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
gurmukh vichahu haumai jai ||
The Gurmukh eradicates egotism from within.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਆਇ ॥
gurmukh mail na laagai aai ||
No filth sticks to the Gurmukh.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੨॥
gurmukh naam vasai man aai ||2||
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, comes to dwell within the mind of the Gurmukh. ||2||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਸਚਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
gurmukh karam dharam sach hoiee ||
Through karma and Dharma, good actions and righteous faith, the Gurmukh becomes true.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਜਲਾਏ ਦੋਈ ॥
gurmukh aha(n)kaar jalaae dhoiee ||
The Gurmukh burns away egotism and duality.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੩॥
gurmukh naam rate sukh hoiee ||3||
The Gurmukh is attuned to the Naam, and is at peace. ||3||
ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁ ਪਰਬੋਧਹੁ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
aapanaa man parabodhahu boojhahu soiee ||
Instruct your own mind, and understand Him.
ਲੋਕ ਸਮਝਾਵਹੁ ਸੁਣੇ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
lok samajhaavahu sune na koiee ||
You may preach to other people, but no one will listen.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਮਝਹੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥
gurmukh samajhahu sadhaa sukh hoiee ||4||
The Gurmukh understands, and is always at peace. ||4||
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਡੰਫੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
manmukh dda(n)f bahut chaturaiee ||
The self-willed manmukhs are such clever hypocrites.
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਸੁ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
jo kichh kamaavai su thai na paiee ||
No matter what they do, it is not acceptable.
ਆਵੈ ਜਾਵੈ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥੫॥
aavai jaavai Thaur na kaiee ||5||
They come and go in reincarnation, and find no place of rest. ||5||
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਾ ॥
manmukh karam kare bahut abhimaanaa ||
The manmukhs perform their rituals, but they are totally selfish and conceited.
ਬਗ ਜਿਉ ਲਾਇ ਬਹੈ ਨਿਤ ਧਿਆਨਾ ॥
bag jiau lai bahai nit dhiaanaa ||
They sit there, like storks, pretending to meditate.
ਜਮਿ ਪਕੜਿਆ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਾ ॥੬॥
jam pakaRiaa tab hee pachhutaanaa ||6||
Caught by the Messenger of Death, they shall regret and repent in the end. ||6||
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
bin satigur seve mukat na hoiee ||
Without serving the True Guru, liberation is not obtained.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮਿਲੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
gur parasaadhee milai har soiee ||
By Guru's Grace, one meets the Lord.
ਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਹੋਈ ॥੭॥
gur dhaataa jug chaare hoiee ||7||
The Guru is the Great Giver, throughout the four ages. ||7||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
gurmukh jaat pat naame vaddiaaiee ||
For the Gurmukh, the Naam is social status, honor and glorious greatness.
ਸਾਇਰ ਕੀ ਪੁਤ੍ਰੀ ਬਿਦਾਰਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
sair kee putree bidhaar gavaiee ||
Maya, the daughter of the ocean, has been slain.
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਝੂਠੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥੮॥੨॥
naanak bin naavai jhooThee chaturaiee ||8||2||
O Nanak, without the Name, all clever tricks are false. ||8||2||

gauRee mahalaa teejaa ||
Gauree, Third Mehla:
ਇਸੁ ਜੁਗ ਕਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਪੜਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਭਾਈ ॥
eis jug kaa dharam paRahu tum bhaiee ||
Learn the Dharma of this age, O Siblings of Destiny;
ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਭ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
poorai gur sabh sojhee paiee ||
all understanding is obtained from the Perfect Guru.
ਐਥੈ ਅਗੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ॥੧॥
aaithai agai har naam sakhaiee ||1||
Here and hereafter, the Lord's Name is our Companion. ||1||
ਰਾਮ ਪੜਹੁ ਮਨਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
raam paRahu man karahu beechaar ||
Learn of the Lord, and contemplate Him in your mind.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਉਤਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur parasaadhee mail utaar ||1|| rahaau ||
By Guru's Grace, your filth shall be washed away. ||1||Pause||
ਵਾਦਿ ਵਿਰੋਧਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
vaadh virodh na paiaa jai ||
Through argument and debate, He cannot be found.
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਫੀਕਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
man tan feekaa dhoojai bhai ||
The mind and body are made insipid through the love of duality.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੨॥
gur kai sabadh sach liv lai ||2||
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, lovingly attune yourself to the True Lord. ||2||
ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
haumai mailaa ih sa(n)saaraa ||
This world is polluted with egotism.
ਨਿਤ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
nit teerath naavai na jai aha(n)kaaraa ||
By taking cleansing baths daily at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, egotism is not eliminated.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਜਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰਾ ॥੩॥
bin gur bheTe jam kare khuaaraa ||3||
Without meeting the Guru, they are tortured by Death. ||3||
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਜਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੈ ॥
so jan saachaa j haumai maarai ||
Those humble beings are true, who conquer their ego.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪੰਚ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ॥
gur kai sabadh pa(n)ch sa(n)ghaarai ||
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they conquer the five thieves.
ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੈ ॥੪॥
aap tarai sagale kul taarai ||4||
They save themselves, and save all their generations as well. ||4||
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਨਟਿ ਬਾਜੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
maiaa moh naT baajee paiee ||
The Actor has staged the drama of emotional attachment to Maya.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧ ਰਹੇ ਲਪਟਾਈ ॥
manmukh a(n)dh rahe lapaTaiee ||
The self-willed manmukhs cling blindly to it.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਲਿਪਤ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੫॥
gurmukh alipat rahe liv laiee ||5||
The Gurmukhs remain detached, and lovingly attune themselves to the Lord. ||5||
ਬਹੁਤੇ ਭੇਖ ਕਰੈ ਭੇਖਧਾਰੀ ॥
bahute bhekh karai bhekhadhaaree ||
The disguisers put on their various disguises.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
a(n)tar tisanaa firai aha(n)kaaree ||
Desire rages within them, and they carry on egotistically.
ਆਪੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੈ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥੬॥
aap na cheenai baajee haaree ||6||
They do not understand themselves, and they lose the game of life. ||6||
ਕਾਪੜ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
kaapaR pahir kare chaturaiee ||
Putting on religious robes, they act so clever,
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਅਤਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ॥
maiaa moh at bharam bhulaiee ||
but they are totally deluded by doubt and emotional attachment to Maya.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੭॥
bin gur seve bahut dhukh paiee ||7||
Without serving the Guru, they suffer in terrible pain. ||7||
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥
naam rate sadhaa bairaagee ||
Those who are attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, remain detached forever.
ਗ੍ਰਿਹੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
girahee a(n)tar saach liv laagee ||
Even as householders, they lovingly attune themselves to the True Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥੮॥੩॥
naanak satigur seveh se vaddabhaagee ||8||3||
O Nanak, those who serve the True Guru are blessed and very fortunate. ||8||3||

Gauree, Third Mehla:
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਵੇਦ ਅਭਿਆਸਾ ॥
brahamaa mool vedh abhiaasaa ||
Brahma is the founder of the study of the Vedas.
ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਉਪਜੇ ਦੇਵ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥
tis te upaje dhev moh piaasaa ||
From him emanated the gods, enticed by desire.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਭਰਮੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥੧॥
trai gun bharame naahee nij ghar vaasaa ||1||
They wander in the three qualities, and they do not dwell within their own home. ||1||
ਹਮ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥
ham har raakhe satiguroo milaiaa ||
The Lord has saved me; I have met the True Guru.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
anadhin bhagat har naam dhiraRaiaa ||1|| rahaau ||
He has implanted devotional worship of the Lord's Name, night and day. ||1||Pause||
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਾਣੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ॥
trai gun baanee braham ja(n)jaalaa ||
The songs of Brahma entangle people in the three qualities.
ਪੜਿ ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਜਮਕਾਲਾ ॥
paR vaadh vakhaaneh sir maare jamakaalaa ||
Reading about the debates and disputes, they are hit over the head by the Messenger of Death.
