ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਭਉ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
jo is maare tis kau bhau naeh ||
One who kills this has no fear.
ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥
jo is maare su naam samaeh ||
One who kills this is absorbed in the Naam.
ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਬੁਝੈ ॥
jo is maare tis kee tirasanaa bujhai ||
One who kills this has his desires quenched.
ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਸਿਝੈ ॥੨॥
jo is maare su dharageh sijhai ||2||
One who kills this is approved in the Court of the Lord. ||2||
ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੋ ਧਨਵੰਤਾ ॥
jo is maare so dhanava(n)taa ||
One who kills this is wealthy and prosperous.
ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੋ ਪਤਿਵੰਤਾ ॥
jo is maare so pativa(n)taa ||
One who kills this is honorable.
ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਜਤੀ ॥
jo is maare soiee jatee ||
One who kills this is truly a celibate.
ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਗਤੀ ॥੩॥
jo is maare tis hovai gatee ||3||
One who kills this attains salvation. ||3||
ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਆਇਆ ਗਨੀ ॥
jo is maare tis kaa aaiaa ganee ||
One who kills this - his coming is auspicious.
ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਧਨੀ ॥
jo is maare su nihachal dhanee ||
One who kills this is steady and wealthy.
ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੋ ਵਡਭਾਗਾ ॥
jo is maare so vaddabhaagaa ||
One who kills this is very fortunate.
ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗਾ ॥੪॥
jo is maare su anadhin jaagaa ||4||
One who kills this remains awake and aware, night and day. ||4||
ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਾ ॥
jo is maare su jeevan mukataa ||
One who kills this is Jivan Mukta, liberated while yet alive.
ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜੁਗਤਾ ॥
jo is maare tis kee niramal jugataa ||
One who kills this lives a pure lifestyle.
ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਸੁਗਿਆਨੀ ॥
jo is maare soiee sugiaanee ||
One who kills this is spiritually wise.
ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਸਹਜ ਧਿਆਨੀ ॥੫॥
jo is maare su sahaj dhiaanee ||5||
One who kills this meditates intuitively. ||5||
ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਰੈ ॥ ਕੋਟਿ ਕਰਮ ਜਾਪ ਤਪ ਕਰੈ ॥
eis maaree bin thai na parai || koT karam jaap tap karai ||
Without killing this, one is not acceptable, even though one may perform millions of rituals, chants and austerities.
ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਨ ਮਿਟੈ ॥
eis maaree bin janam na miTai ||
Without killing this, one does not escape the cycle of reincarnation.
ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਮ ਤੇ ਨਹੀ ਛੁਟੈ ॥੬॥
eis maaree bin jam te nahee chhuTai ||6||
Without killing this, one does not escape death. ||6||
ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
eis maaree bin giaan na hoiee ||
Without killing this, one does not obtain spiritual wisdom.
ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਜੂਠਿ ਨ ਧੋਈ ॥
eis maaree bin jooTh na dhoiee ||
Without killing this, one's impurity is not washed off.
ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮੈਲਾ ॥
eis maaree bin sabh kichh mailaa ||
Without killing this, everything is filthy.
ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਉਲਾ ॥੭॥
eis maaree bin sabh kichh jaulaa ||7||
Without killing this, everything is a losing game. ||7||
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਭਏ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਿਧਿ ॥
jaa kau bhe kirapaal kirapaa nidh ||
When the Lord, the Treasure of Mercy, bestows His Mercy,
ਤਿਸੁ ਭਈ ਖਲਾਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਸਗਲ ਸਿਧਿ ॥
tis bhiee khalaasee hoiee sagal sidh ||
one obtains release, and attains total perfection.
ਗੁਰਿ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਹੈ ਮਾਰੀ ॥
gur dhubidhaa jaa kee hai maaree ||
One whose duality has been killed by the Guru,
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥੮॥੫॥
kahu naanak so braham beechaaree ||8||5||
says Nanak, contemplates God. ||8||5||

Gauree, Fifth Mehla:
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਜੁਰੈ ਤ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਮੀਤੁ ॥
har siau jurai ta sabh ko meet ||
When someone attaches himself to the Lord, then everyone is his friend.
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਜੁਰੈ ਤ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਚੀਤੁ ॥
har siau jurai ta nihachal cheet ||
When someone attaches himself to the Lord, then his consciousness is steady.
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਜੁਰੈ ਨ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਕਾੜੑਾ ॥
har siau jurai na viaapai kaaR(h)aa ||
When someone attaches himself to the Lord, he is not afflicted by worries.
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਜੁਰੈ ਤ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
har siau jurai ta hoi nisataaraa ||1||
When someone attaches himself to the Lord, he is emancipated. ||1||
ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੂੰ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਜੋਰੁ ॥
re man mere too(n) har siau jor ||
O my mind, unite yourself with the Lord.
ਕਾਜਿ ਤੁਹਾਰੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਹੋਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kaaj tuhaarai naahee hor ||1|| rahaau ||
Nothing else is of any use to you. ||1||Pause||
ਵਡੇ ਵਡੇ ਜੋ ਦੁਨੀਆਦਾਰ ॥
vadde vadde jo dhuneeaadhaar ||
The great and powerful people of the world
ਕਾਹੂ ਕਾਜਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਗਾਵਾਰ ॥
kaahoo kaaj naahee gaavaar ||
are of no use, you fool!
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਨੀਚ ਕੁਲੁ ਸੁਣਹਿ ॥
har kaa dhaas neech kul suneh ||
The Lord's slave may be born of humble origins,
ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਉਧਰਹਿ ॥੨॥
tis kai sa(n)g khin meh udhareh ||2||
but in his company, you shall be saved in an instant. ||2||
ਕੋਟਿ ਮਜਨ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਨਾਮ ॥
koT majan jaa kai sun naam ||
Hearing the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is equal to millions of cleansing baths.
ਕੋਟਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹੈ ਧਿਆਨ ॥
koT poojaa jaa kai hai dhiaan ||
Meditating on it is equal to millions of worship ceremonies.
ਕੋਟਿ ਪੁੰਨ ਸੁਣਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
koT pu(n)n sun har kee baanee ||
Hearing the Word of the Lord's Bani is equal to giving millions in alms.
ਕੋਟਿ ਫਲਾ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੀ ॥੩॥
koT falaa gur te bidh jaanee ||3||
To know the way, through the Guru, is equal to millions of rewards. ||3||
ਮਨ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਮਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਚੇਤ ॥
man apune meh fir fir chet ||
Within your mind, over and over again, think of Him,
ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਹੇਤ ॥
binas jaeh maiaa ke het ||
and your love of Maya shall depart.
ਹਰਿ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਤੁਮਰੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥
har abinaasee tumarai sa(n)g ||
The Imperishable Lord is always with you.
ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਰਚੁ ਰਾਮ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥੪॥
man mere rach raam kai ra(n)g ||4||
O my mind, immerse yourself in the Love of the Lord. ||4||
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕਾਮਿ ਉਤਰੈ ਸਭ ਭੂਖ ॥
jaa kai kaam utarai sabh bhookh ||
Working for Him, all hunger departs.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਜੋਹਹਿ ਦੂਤ ॥
jaa kai kaam na joheh dhoot ||
Working for Him, the Messenger of Death will not be watching you.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕਾਮਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਵਡ ਗਮਰੁ ॥
jaa kai kaam teraa vadd gamar ||
Working for Him, you shall obtain glorious greatness.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕਾਮਿ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਤੂੰ ਅਮਰੁ ॥੫॥
jaa kai kaam hoveh too(n) amar ||5||
Working for Him, you shall become immortal. ||5||
ਜਾ ਕੇ ਚਾਕਰ ਕਉ ਨਹੀ ਡਾਨ ॥
jaa ke chaakar kau nahee ddaan ||
His servant does not suffer punishment.
ਜਾ ਕੇ ਚਾਕਰ ਕਉ ਨਹੀ ਬਾਨ ॥
jaa ke chaakar kau nahee baan ||
His servant suffers no loss.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਦਫਤਰਿ ਪੁਛੈ ਨ ਲੇਖਾ ॥
jaa kai dhafatar puchhai na lekhaa ||
In His Court, His servant does not have to answer for his account.
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਕਰਹੁ ਬਿਸੇਖਾ ॥੬॥
taa kee chaakaree karahu bisekhaa ||6||
So serve Him with distinction. ||6||
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਊਨ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਾਹੂ ਬਾਤ ॥
jaa kai uoon naahee kaahoo baat ||
He is not lacking in anything.
ਏਕਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਅਨੇਕਹਿ ਭਾਤਿ ॥
ekeh aap anekeh bhaat ||
He Himself is One, although He appears in so many forms.
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਹੋਇ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥
jaa kee dhirasaT hoi sadhaa nihaal ||
By His Glance of Grace, you shall be happy forever.
ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਘਾਲ ॥੭॥
man mere kar taa kee ghaal ||7||
So work for Him, O my mind. ||7||
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਮੂੜਾ ॥
naa ko chatur naahee ko mooRaa ||
No one is clever, and no one is foolish.
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਹੀਣੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਸੂਰਾ ॥
naa ko heen naahee ko sooraa ||
No one is weak, and no one is a hero.
