Gauree, Fifth Mehla:
ਰੰਗ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਕੇ ਭੋਗਾ ਇਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਅੰਧ ਨ ਜਾਨੀ ॥੧॥
ra(n)g sa(n)g bikhiaa ke bhogaa in sa(n)g a(n)dh na jaanee ||1||
He is immersed in the enjoyment of corrupt pleasures; engrossed in them, the blind fool does not understand. ||1||
ਹਉ ਸੰਚਉ ਹਉ ਖਾਟਤਾ ਸਗਲੀ ਅਵਧ ਬਿਹਾਨੀ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
hau sa(n)chau hau khaaTataa sagalee avadh bihaanee || rahaau ||
"I am earning profits, I am getting rich", he says, as his life passes away. ||Pause||
ਹਉ ਸੂਰਾ ਪਰਧਾਨੁ ਹਉ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੁਝਹਿ ਸਮਾਨੀ ॥੨॥
hau sooraa paradhaan hau ko naahee mujheh samaanee ||2||
"I am a hero, I am famous and distinguished; no one is equal to me."||2||
ਜੋਬਨਵੰਤ ਅਚਾਰ ਕੁਲੀਨਾ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਗੁਮਾਨੀ ॥੩॥
jobanava(n)t achaar kuleenaa man meh hoi gumaanee ||3||
"I am young, cultured, and born of a good family." In his mind, he is proud and arrogant like this. ||3||
ਜਿਉ ਉਲਝਾਇਓ ਬਾਧ ਬੁਧਿ ਕਾ ਮਰਤਿਆ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਸਰਾਨੀ ॥੪॥
jiau ulajhaio baadh budh kaa maratiaa nahee bisaraanee ||4||
He is trapped by his false intellect, and he does not forget this until he dies. ||4||
ਭਾਈ ਮੀਤ ਬੰਧਪ ਸਖੇ ਪਾਛੇ ਤਿਨਹੂ ਕਉ ਸੰਪਾਨੀ ॥੫॥
bhaiee meet ba(n)dhap sakhe paachhe tinahoo kau sa(n)paanee ||5||
Brothers, friends, relatives and companions who live after him - he entrusts his wealth to them. ||5||
ਜਿਤੁ ਲਾਗੋ ਮਨੁ ਬਾਸਨਾ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਾਈ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਨੀ ॥੬॥
jit laago man baasanaa a(n)t saiee pragaTaanee ||6||
That desire, to which the mind is attached, at the last moment, becomes manifest. ||6||
ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਸੁਚਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਿ ਇਹ ਬੰਧਨ ਬੰਧਾਨੀ ॥੭॥
aha(n)budh such karam kar ieh ba(n)dhan ba(n)dhaanee ||7||
He may perform religious deeds, but his mind is egotistical, and he is bound by these bonds. ||7||
ਦਇਆਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਦਸਾਨੀ ॥੮॥੩॥੧੫॥੪੪॥ ਜੁਮਲਾ
dhiaal purakh kirapaa karahu naanak dhaas dhasaanee ||8||3||15||44|| jumalaa
O Merciful Lord, please bless me Your Mercy, that Nanak may become the slave of Your slaves. ||8||3||15||44||Total||

ਰਾਗੁ ਗਉੜੀ ਪੂਰਬੀ ਛੰਤ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Raag Gauree Poorbee, Chhant, First Mehla:
ਮੁੰਧ ਰੈਣਿ ਦੁਹੇਲੜੀਆ ਜੀਉ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
mu(n)dh rain dhuhelaReeaa jeeau needh na aavai ||
For the bride, the night is painful; sleep does not come.
ਸਾ ਧਨ ਦੁਬਲੀਆ ਜੀਉ ਪਿਰ ਕੈ ਹਾਵੈ ॥
saa dhan dhubaleeaa jeeau pir kai haavai ||
The soul-bride has grown weak, in the pain of separation from her Husband Lord.
ਧਨ ਥੀਈ ਦੁਬਲਿ ਕੰਤ ਹਾਵੈ ਕੇਵ ਨੈਣੀ ਦੇਖਏ ॥
dhan theeiee dhubal ka(n)t haavai kev nainee dhekhe ||
The soul-bride is wasting away, in the pain of separation from her Husband; how can she see Him with her eyes?
ਸੀਗਾਰ ਮਿਠ ਰਸ ਭੋਗ ਭੋਜਨ ਸਭੁ ਝੂਠੁ ਕਿਤੈ ਨ ਲੇਖਏ ॥
seegaar miTh ras bhog bhojan sabh jhooTh kitai na lekhe ||
Her decorations, sweet foods, sensuous pleasures and delicacies are all false; they are of no account at all.
ਮੈ ਮਤ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਗਰਬਿ ਗਾਲੀ ਦੁਧਾ ਥਣੀ ਨ ਆਵਏ ॥
mai mat joban garab gaalee dhudhaa thanee na aave ||
Intoxicated with the wine of youthful pride, she has been ruined, and her breasts no longer yield milk.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਆਵਏ ॥੧॥
naanak saa dhan milai milaiee bin pir needh na aave ||1||
O Nanak, the soul-bride meets her Husband Lord, when He causes her to meet Him; without Him, sleep does not come to her. ||1||
ਮੁੰਧ ਨਿਮਾਨੜੀਆ ਜੀਉ ਬਿਨੁ ਧਨੀ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
mu(n)dh nimaanaReeaa jeeau bin dhanee piaare ||
The bride is dishonored without her Beloved Husband Lord.
ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈਗੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
kiau sukh paavaigee bin ur dhaare ||
How can she find peace, without enshrining Him in her heart?
ਨਾਹ ਬਿਨੁ ਘਰ ਵਾਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਪੁਛਹੁ ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੀਆ ॥
naeh bin ghar vaas naahee puchhahu sakhee saheleeaa ||
Without her Husband, her home is not worth living in; go and ask your sisters and companions.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਵਸਹਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਸੁਹੇਲੀਆ ॥ ਸਚੁ ਮਨਿ ਸਜਨ ਸੰਤੋਖਿ ਮੇਲਾ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਹੁ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥
bin naam preet piaar naahee vaseh saach suheleeaa || sach man sajan sa(n)tokh melaa gurmatee sahu jaaniaa ||
Without Naam, the Name of the Lord, there is no love and affection; but with her True Lord, she abides in peace. Through mental truth and contentment, union with the True Friend is attained; through the Guru's Teachings, the Husband Lord is known.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਣੀਆ ॥੨॥
naanak naam na chhoddai saa dhan naam sahaj samaaneeaa ||2||
O Nanak, that soul-bride who does not abandon the Naam, is intuitively absorbed in the Naam. ||2||
ਮਿਲੁ ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੜੀਹੋ ਹਮ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵੇਹਾ ॥
mil sakhee sahelaReeho ham pir raavehaa ||
Come, O my sisters and companions - let's enjoy our Husband Lord.
ਗੁਰ ਪੁਛਿ ਲਿਖਉਗੀ ਜੀਉ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਨੇਹਾ ॥
gur puchh likhaugee jeeau sabadh sanehaa ||
I will ask the Guru, and write His Word as my love-note.
ਸਬਦੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਗੁਰਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ਮਨਮੁਖੀ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੀਆ ॥
sabadh saachaa gur dhikhaiaa manmukhee pachhutaaneeaa ||
The Guru has shown me the True Word of the Shabad. The self-willed manmukhs will regret and repent.
ਨਿਕਸਿ ਜਾਤਉ ਰਹੈ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਜਾਮਿ ਸਚੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ॥
nikas jaatau rahai asathir jaam sach pachhaaniaa ||
My wandering mind became steady, when I recognized the True One.
ਸਾਚ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਨਉਤਨ ਸਬਦਿ ਨੇਹੁ ਨਵੇਲਓ ॥
saach kee mat sadhaa nautan sabadh neh navelo ||
The Teachings of Truth are forever new; the love of the Shabad is forever fresh.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੀਹੋ ॥੩॥
naanak nadharee sahaj saachaa milahu sakhee saheleeho ||3||
O Nanak, through the Glance of Grace of the True Lord, celestial peace is obtained; let's meet Him, O my sisters and companions. ||3||
ਮੇਰੀ ਇਛ ਪੁਨੀ ਜੀਉ ਹਮ ਘਰਿ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਆਇਆ ॥
meree ichh punee jeeau ham ghar saajan aaiaa ||
My desire has been fulfilled - my Friend has come to my home.
ਮਿਲਿ ਵਰੁ ਨਾਰੀ ਮੰਗਲੁ ਗਾਇਆ ॥
mil var naaree ma(n)gal gaiaa ||
At the Union of husband and wife, the songs of rejoicing were sung.
ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਮੰਗਲੁ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਿ ਰਹਸੀ ਮੁੰਧ ਮਨਿ ਓਮਾਹਓ ॥
gun gai ma(n)gal prem rahasee mu(n)dh man omaaho ||
Singing the songs of joyful praise and love to Him, the soul-bride's mind is thrilled and delighted.
ਸਾਜਨ ਰਹੰਸੇ ਦੁਸਟ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਜਪਿ ਸਚੁ ਲਾਹਓ ॥
saajan raha(n)se dhusaT viaape saach jap sach laaho ||
My friends are happy, and my enemies are unhappy; meditating on the True Lord, the true profit is obtained.
ਕਰ ਜੋੜਿ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਕਰੈ ਬਿਨਤੀ ਰੈਣਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਸਿ ਭਿੰਨੀਆ ॥
kar joR saa dhan karai binatee rain dhin ras bhi(n)neeaa ||
With her palms pressed together, the soul-bride prays, that she may remain immersed in the Love of her Lord, night and day.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਿਰੁ ਧਨ ਕਰਹਿ ਰਲੀਆ ਇਛ ਮੇਰੀ ਪੁੰਨੀਆ ॥੪॥੧॥
naanak pir dhan kareh raleeaa ichh meree pu(n)neeaa ||4||1||
O Nanak, the Husband Lord and the soul-bride revel together; my desires are fulfilled. ||4||1||
