Ashtapadee:
ਜਹ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਮੀਤ ਨ ਭਾਈ ॥
jeh maat pitaa sut meet na bhaiee ||
Where there is no mother, father, children, friends or siblings
ਮਨ ਊਹਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਹਾਈ ॥
man uoohaa naam terai sa(n)g sahaiee ||
O my mind, there, only the Naam, the Name of the Lord, shall be with you as your help and support.
ਜਹ ਮਹਾ ਭਇਆਨ ਦੂਤ ਜਮ ਦਲੈ ॥
jeh mahaa bhiaan dhoot jam dhalai ||
Where the great and terrible Messenger of Death shall try to crush you,
ਤਹ ਕੇਵਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਚਲੈ ॥
teh keval naam sa(n)g terai chalai ||
there, only the Naam shall go along with you.
ਜਹ ਮੁਸਕਲ ਹੋਵੈ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਰੀ ॥
jeh musakal hovai at bhaaree ||
Where the obstacles are so very heavy,
ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਖਿਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਧਾਰੀ ॥
har ko naam khin maeh udhaaree ||
the Name of the Lord shall rescue you in an instant.
ਅਨਿਕ ਪੁਨਹਚਰਨ ਕਰਤ ਨਹੀ ਤਰੈ ॥
anik punahacharan karat nahee tarai ||
By performing countless religious rituals, you shall not be saved.
ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਕੋਟਿ ਪਾਪ ਪਰਹਰੈ ॥
har ko naam koT paap paraharai ||
The Name of the Lord washes off millions of sins.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ॥
gurmukh naam japahu man mere ||
As Gurmukh, chant the Naam, O my mind.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸੂਖ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥੧॥
naanak paavahu sookh ghanere ||1||
O Nanak, you shall obtain countless joys. ||1||
ਸਗਲ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕੋ ਰਾਜਾ ਦੁਖੀਆ ॥
sagal sirasaT ko raajaa dhukheeaa ||
The rulers of the all the world are unhappy;
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਹੋਇ ਸੁਖੀਆ ॥
har kaa naam japat hoi sukheeaa ||
one who chants the Name of the Lord becomes happy.
ਲਾਖ ਕਰੋਰੀ ਬੰਧੁ ਨ ਪਰੈ ॥
laakh karoree ba(n)dh na parai ||
Acquiring hundreds of thousands and millions, your desires shall not be contained.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਨਿਸਤਰੈ ॥
har kaa naam japat nisatarai ||
Chanting the Name of the Lord, you shall find release.
ਅਨਿਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗ ਤਿਖ ਨ ਬੁਝਾਵੈ ॥
anik maiaa ra(n)g tikh na bujhaavai ||
By the countless pleasures of Maya, your thirst shall not be quenched.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਆਘਾਵੈ ॥
har kaa naam japat aaghaavai ||
Chanting the Name of the Lord, you shall be satisfied.
ਜਿਹ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਇਹੁ ਜਾਤ ਇਕੇਲਾ ॥
jeh maarag ih jaat ikelaa ||
Upon that path where you must go all alone,
ਤਹ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਹੋਤ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ॥
teh har naam sa(n)g hot suhelaa ||
there, only the Lord's Name shall go with you to sustain you.
ਐਸਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥
aaisaa naam man sadhaa dhiaaieeaai ||
On such a Name, O my mind, meditate forever.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੨॥
naanak gurmukh param gat paieeaai ||2||
O Nanak, as Gurmukh, you shall obtain the state of supreme dignity. ||2||
ਛੂਟਤ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਟਿ ਲਖ ਬਾਹੀ ॥
chhooTat nahee koT lakh baahee ||
You shall not be saved by hundreds of thousands and millions of helping hands.
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਤਹ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰਾਹੀ ॥
naam japat teh paar paraahee ||
Chanting the Naam, you shall be lifted up and carried across.
ਅਨਿਕ ਬਿਘਨ ਜਹ ਆਇ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ॥
anik bighan jeh aai sa(n)ghaarai ||
Where countless misfortunes threaten to destroy you,
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਤਕਾਲ ਉਧਾਰੈ ॥
har kaa naam tatakaal udhaarai ||
the Name of the Lord shall rescue you in an instant.
ਅਨਿਕ ਜੋਨਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਮ ॥
anik jon janamai mar jaam ||
Through countless incarnations, you were born, then died and then born again.
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਪਾਵੈ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ॥
naam japat paavai bisraam ||
Chanting the Name of the Lord, you shall come to rest in peace.
ਹਉ ਮੈਲਾ ਮਲੁ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਧੋਵੈ ॥
hau mailaa mal kabahu na dhovai ||
The ego is polluted by a filth which can never be washed off.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਕੋਟਿ ਪਾਪ ਖੋਵੈ ॥
har kaa naam koT paap khovai ||
The Name of the Lord erases millions of sins.
ਐਸਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਮਨ ਰੰਗਿ ॥
aaisaa naam japahu man ra(n)g ||
Chant such a Name with love, O my mind.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥੩॥
naanak paieeaai saadh kai sa(n)g ||3||
O Nanak, it is obtained in the Company of the Holy. ||3||
ਜਿਹ ਮਾਰਗ ਕੇ ਗਨੇ ਜਾਹਿ ਨ ਕੋਸਾ ॥
jeh maarag ke gane jaeh na kosaa ||
On that path where the miles cannot be counted,
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਊਹਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਤੋਸਾ ॥
har kaa naam uoohaa sa(n)g tosaa ||
there, the Name of the Lord shall be your sustenance.
ਜਿਹ ਪੈਡੈ ਮਹਾ ਅੰਧ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ॥
jeh paiddai mahaa a(n)dh gubaaraa ||
On that journey of total, pitch-black darkness,
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਉਜੀਆਰਾ ॥
har kaa naam sa(n)g ujeeaaraa ||
the Name of the Lord shall be the Light with you.
ਜਹਾ ਪੰਥਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੋ ਨ ਸਿਞਾਨੂ ॥
jahaa pa(n)th teraa ko na sin(j)aanoo ||
On that journey where no one knows you,
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਹ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਛਾਨੂ ॥
har kaa naam teh naal pachhaanoo ||
with the Name of the Lord, you shall be recognized.
ਜਹ ਮਹਾ ਭਇਆਨ ਤਪਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਘਾਮ ॥
jeh mahaa bhiaan tapat bahu ghaam ||
Where there is awesome and terrible heat and blazing sunshine,
ਤਹ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਤੁਮ ਊਪਰਿ ਛਾਮ ॥
teh har ke naam kee tum uoopar chhaam ||
there, the Name of the Lord will give you shade.
ਜਹਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਖਾ ਮਨ ਤੁਝੁ ਆਕਰਖੈ ॥
jahaa tirakhaa man tujh aakarakhai ||
Where thirst, O my mind, torments you to cry out,
ਤਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਬਰਖੈ ॥੪॥
teh naanak har har a(n)mrit barakhai ||4||
there, O Nanak, the Ambrosial Name, Har, Har, shall rain down upon you. ||4||
ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਬਰਤਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
bhagat janaa kee baratan naam ||
Unto the devotee, the Naam is an article of daily use.
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮੁ ॥
sa(n)t janaa kai man bisraam ||
The minds of the humble Saints are at peace.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਸ ਕੀ ਓਟ ॥
har kaa naam dhaas kee oT ||
The Name of the Lord is the Support of His servants.
ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਧਰੇ ਜਨ ਕੋਟਿ ॥
har kai naam udhare jan koT ||
By the Name of the Lord, millions have been saved.
ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਕਰਤ ਸੰਤ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ॥
har jas karat sa(n)t dhin raat ||
The Saints chant the Praises of the Lord, day and night.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਅਉਖਧੁ ਸਾਧ ਕਮਾਤਿ ॥
har har aaukhadh saadh kamaat ||
Har, Har - the Lord's Name - the Holy use it as their healing medicine.
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥
har jan kai har naam nidhaan ||
The Lord's Name is the treasure of the Lord's servant.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਿ ਜਨ ਕੀਨੋ ਦਾਨ ॥
paarabraham jan keeno dhaan ||
The Supreme Lord God has blessed His humble servant with this gift.
ਮਨ ਤਨ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤੇ ਰੰਗ ਏਕੈ ॥
man tan ra(n)g rate ra(n)g ekai ||
Mind and body are imbued with ecstasy in the Love of the One Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਬਿਰਤਿ ਬਿਬੇਕੈ ॥੫॥
naanak jan kai birat bibekai ||5||
O Nanak, careful and discerning understanding is the way of the Lord's humble servant. ||5||
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ॥
har kaa naam jan kau mukat jugat ||
The Name of the Lord is the path of liberation for His humble servants.
ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਭੁਗਤਿ ॥
har kai naam jan kau tirapat bhugat ||
With the food of the Name of the Lord, His servants are satisfied.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਨ ਕਾ ਰੂਪ ਰੰਗੁ ॥
har kaa naam jan kaa roop ra(n)g ||
The Name of the Lord is the beauty and delight of His servants.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਕਬ ਪਰੈ ਨ ਭੰਗੁ ॥
har naam japat kab parai na bha(n)g ||
Chanting the Lord's Name, one is never blocked by obstacles.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
har kaa naam jan kee vaddiaaiee ||
The Name of the Lord is the glorious greatness of His servants.
ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਜਨ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਈ ॥
har kai naam jan sobhaa paiee ||
Through the Name of the Lord, His servants obtain honor.
