ਇਆਹੂ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਬਿਹਾਨੇ ਕਈ ਜਨਮ ॥
eiaahoo jugat bihaane kiee janam ||
So many lifetimes are wasted in these ways.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਆਪਨ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਮ ॥੭॥
naanak raakh leh aapan kar karam ||7||
Nanak: uplift them, and redeem them, O Lord - show Your Mercy! ||7||
ਤੂ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਤੁਮ ਪਹਿ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
too Thaakur tum peh aradhaas ||
You are our Lord and Master; to You, I offer this prayer.
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
jeeau pi(n)dd sabh teree raas ||
This body and soul are all Your property.
ਤੁਮ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਹਮ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਤੇਰੇ ॥
tum maat pitaa ham baarik tere ||
You are our mother and father; we are Your children.
ਤੁਮਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਮਹਿ ਸੂਖ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥
tumaree kirapaa meh sookh ghanere ||
In Your Grace, there are so many joys!
ਕੋਇ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਤੁਮਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ॥
koi na jaanai tumaraa a(n)t ||
No one knows Your limits.
ਊਚੇ ਤੇ ਊਚਾ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥
uooche te uoochaa bhagava(n)t ||
O Highest of the High, Most Generous God,
ਸਗਲ ਸਮਗ੍ਰੀ ਤੁਮਰੈ ਸੂਤ੍ਰਿ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
sagal samagree tumarai sootr dhaaree ||
the whole creation is strung on Your thread.
ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਆਗਿਆਕਾਰੀ ॥
tum te hoi su aagiaakaaree ||
That which has come from You is under Your Command.
ਤੁਮਰੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
tumaree gat mit tum hee jaanee ||
You alone know Your state and extent.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਸਦਾ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ॥੮॥੪॥
naanak dhaas sadhaa kurabaanee ||8||4||
Nanak, Your slave, is forever a sacrifice. ||8||4||

ਦੇਨਹਾਰੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਛੋਡਿ ਕੈ ਲਾਗਹਿ ਆਨ ਸੁਆਇ ॥
dhenahaar prabh chhodd kai laageh aan suaai ||
One who renounces God the Giver, and attaches himself to other affairs
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹੂ ਨ ਸੀਝਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
naanak kahoo na seejhiee bin naavai pat jai ||1||
- O Nanak, he shall never succeed. Without the Name, he shall lose his honor. ||1||

Ashtapadee:
ਦਸ ਬਸਤੂ ਲੇ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
dhas basatoo le paachhai paavai ||
He obtains ten things, and puts them behind him;
ਏਕ ਬਸਤੁ ਕਾਰਨਿ ਬਿਖੋਟਿ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥
ek basat kaaran bikhoT gavaavai ||
for the sake of one thing withheld, he forfeits his faith.
ਏਕ ਭੀ ਨ ਦੇਇ ਦਸ ਭੀ ਹਿਰਿ ਲੇਇ ॥
ek bhee na dhei dhas bhee hir lei ||
But what if that one thing were not given, and the ten were taken away?
ਤਉ ਮੂੜਾ ਕਹੁ ਕਹਾ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
tau mooRaa kahu kahaa karei ||
Then, what could the fool say or do?
ਜਿਸੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਚਾਰਾ ॥
jis Thaakur siau naahee chaaraa ||
Our Lord and Master cannot be moved by force.
ਤਾ ਕਉ ਕੀਜੈ ਸਦ ਨਮਸਕਾਰਾ ॥
taa kau keejai sadh namasakaaraa ||
Unto Him, bow forever in adoration.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੀਠਾ ॥
jaa kai man laagaa prabh meeThaa ||
That one, unto whose mind God seems sweet
ਸਰਬ ਸੂਖ ਤਾਹੂ ਮਨਿ ਵੂਠਾ ॥
sarab sookh taahoo man vooThaa ||
all pleasures come to abide in his mind.
ਜਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਅਪਨਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮਨਾਇਆ ॥
jis jan apanaa hukam manaiaa ||
One who abides by the Lord's Will,
ਸਰਬ ਥੋਕ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
sarab thok naanak tin paiaa ||1||
O Nanak, obtains all things. ||1||
ਅਗਨਤ ਸਾਹੁ ਅਪਨੀ ਦੇ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
aganat saahu apanee dhe raas ||
God the Banker gives endless capital to the mortal,
ਖਾਤ ਪੀਤ ਬਰਤੈ ਅਨਦ ਉਲਾਸਿ ॥
khaat peet baratai anadh ulaas ||
who eats, drinks and expends it with pleasure and joy.
ਅਪੁਨੀ ਅਮਾਨ ਕਛੁ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਸਾਹੁ ਲੇਇ ॥
apunee amaan kachh bahur saahu lei ||
If some of this capital is later taken back by the Banker,
ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਨਿ ਰੋਸੁ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
agiaanee man ros karei ||
the ignorant person shows his anger.
ਅਪਨੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਖੋਵੈ ॥
apanee parateet aap hee khovai ||
He himself destroys his own credibility,
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਉਸ ਕਾ ਬਿਸ੍ਵਾਸੁ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
bahur us kaa bisavaiaas na hovai ||
and he shall not again be trusted.
ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਬਸਤੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਰਾਖੈ ॥
jis kee basat tis aagai raakhai ||
When one offers to the Lord, that which belongs to the Lord,
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਮਾਨੈ ਮਾਥੈ ॥
prabh kee aagiaa maanai maathai ||
and willingly abides by the Will of God's Order,
ਉਸ ਤੇ ਚਉਗੁਨ ਕਰੈ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ॥
aus te chaugun karai nihaal ||
the Lord will make him happy four times over.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆਲੁ ॥੨॥
naanak saahib sadhaa dhiaal ||2||
O Nanak, our Lord and Master is merciful forever. ||2||
ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਹੇਤ ॥ ਸਰਪਰ ਹੋਵਤ ਜਾਨੁ ਅਨੇਤ ॥
anik bhaat maiaa ke het || sarapar hovat jaan anet ||
The many forms of attachment to Maya shall surely pass away - know that they are transitory.
ਬਿਰਖ ਕੀ ਛਾਇਆ ਸਿਉ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
birakh kee chhaiaa siau ra(n)g laavai ||
People fall in love with the shade of the tree,
ਓਹ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਉਹੁ ਮਨਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਵੈ ॥
oh binasai uh man pachhutaavai ||
and when it passes away, they feel regret in their minds.
ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਚਾਲਨਹਾਰੁ ॥
jo dheesai so chaalanahaar ||
Whatever is seen, shall pass away;
ਲਪਟਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਤਹ ਅੰਧ ਅੰਧਾਰੁ ॥
lapaT rahio teh a(n)dh a(n)dhaar ||
and yet, the blindest of the blind cling to it.
ਬਟਾਊ ਸਿਉ ਜੋ ਲਾਵੈ ਨੇਹ ॥
baTaauoo siau jo laavai neh ||
One who gives her love to a passing traveler
ਤਾ ਕਉ ਹਾਥਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਕੇਹ ॥
taa kau haath na aavai keh ||
nothing shall come into her hands in this way.
ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ॥
man har ke naam kee preet sukhadhaiee ||
O mind, the love of the Name of the Lord bestows peace.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਲਏ ਲਾਈ ॥੩॥
kar kirapaa naanak aap le laiee ||3||
O Nanak, the Lord, in His Mercy, unites us with Himself. ||3||
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥
mithiaa tan dhan kuTa(n)b sabaiaa ||
False are body, wealth, and all relations.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
mithiaa haumai mamataa maiaa ||
False are ego, possessiveness and Maya.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਰਾਜ ਜੋਬਨ ਧਨ ਮਾਲ ॥
mithiaa raaj joban dhan maal ||
False are power, youth, wealth and property.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬਿਕਰਾਲ ॥
mithiaa kaam karodh bikaraal ||
False are sexual desire and wild anger.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਰਥ ਹਸਤੀ ਅਸ੍ਵ ਬਸਤ੍ਰਾ ॥
mithiaa rath hasatee asavai basatraa ||
False are chariots, elephants, horses and expensive clothes.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਰੰਗ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਪੇਖਿ ਹਸਤਾ ॥
mithiaa ra(n)g sa(n)g maiaa pekh hasataa ||
False is the love of gathering wealth, and reveling in the sight of it.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਧ੍ਰੋਹ ਮੋਹ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
mithiaa dhroh moh abhimaan ||
False are deception, emotional attachment and egotistical pride.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਆਪਸ ਊਪਰਿ ਕਰਤ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥
mithiaa aapas uoopar karat gumaan ||
False are pride and self-conceit.
ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਸਰਨ ॥
asathir bhagat saadh kee saran ||
Only devotional worship is permanent, and the Sanctuary of the Holy.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ॥੪॥
naanak jap jap jeevai har ke charan ||4||
Nanak lives by meditating, meditating on the Lotus Feet of the Lord. ||4||
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਸੁਨਹਿ ॥
mithiaa sravan par ni(n)dhaa suneh ||
False are the ears which listen to the slander of others.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਹਸਤ ਪਰ ਦਰਬ ਕਉ ਹਿਰਹਿ ॥
mithiaa hasat par dharab kau hireh ||
False are the hands which steal the wealth of others.
