ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਛਪੈ ਕਿਉ ਛਪਿਆ ਏਕੀ ਏਕੀ ਵੰਡਿ ਦੀਆ ॥੪॥੭॥
kahai naanak chhapai kiau chhapiaa ekee ekee va(n)dd dheeaa ||4||7||
Says Nanak, by hiding, how can the Lord be hidden? He has given each their share, one by one. ||4||7||

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
aasaa mahalaa pehilaa ||
Aasaa, First Mehla:
ਕਰਮ ਕਰਤੂਤਿ ਬੇਲਿ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਫਲੁ ਹੂਆ ॥
karam karatoot bel bisathaaree raam naam fal hooaa ||
The vine of good actions and character has spread out, and it bears the fruit of the Lord's Name.
ਤਿਸੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖ ਅਨਾਹਦੁ ਵਾਜੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨਿ ਕੀਆ ॥੧॥
tis roop na rekh anaahadh vaajai sabadh nira(n)jan keeaa ||1||
The Name has no form or outline; it vibrates with the unstruck Sound Current; through the Word of the Shabad, the Immaculate Lord is revealed. ||1||
ਕਰੇ ਵਖਿਆਣੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ॥
kare vakhiaan jaanai je koiee ||
One can speak on this only when he knows it.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਸੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
a(n)mrit peevai soiee ||1|| rahaau ||
He alone drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਨੑ ਪੀਆ ਸੇ ਮਸਤ ਭਏ ਹੈ ਤੂਟੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਫਾਹੇ ॥
jin(h) peeaa se masat bhe hai tooTe ba(n)dhan faahe ||
Those who drink it in are enraptured; their bonds and shackles are cut away.
ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਤਾ ਛੋਡੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਲਾਹੇ ॥੨॥
jotee jot samaanee bheetar taa chhodde maiaa ke laahe ||2||
When one's light blends into the Divine Light, then the desire for Maya is ended. ||2||
ਸਰਬ ਜੋਤਿ ਰੂਪੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਸਗਲ ਭਵਨ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
sarab jot roop teraa dhekhiaa sagal bhavan teree maiaa ||
Among all lights, I behold Your Form; all the worlds are Your Maya.
ਰਾਰੈ ਰੂਪਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਬੈਠਾ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਛਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
raarai roop niraalam baiThaa nadhar kare vich chhaiaa ||3||
Among the tumults and forms, He sits in serene detachment; He bestows His Glance of Grace upon those who are engrossed in the illusion. ||3||
ਬੀਣਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਵੈ ਜੋਗੀ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਰੂਪਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
beenaa sabadh vajaavai jogee dharasan roop apaaraa ||
The Yogi who plays on the instrument of the Shabad gains the Blessed Vision of the Infinitely Beautiful Lord.
ਸਬਦਿ ਅਨਾਹਦਿ ਸੋ ਸਹੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੮॥
sabadh anaahadh so sahu raataa naanak kahai vichaaraa ||4||8||
He, the Lord, is immersed in the Unstruck Shabad of the Word, says Nanak, the humble and meek. ||4||8||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
aasaa mahalaa pehilaa ||
Aasaa, First Mehla:
ਮੈ ਗੁਣ ਗਲਾ ਕੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰ ॥
mai gun galaa ke sir bhaar ||
My virtue is that I carry the load of my words upon my head.
ਗਲੀ ਗਲਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ॥
galee galaa sirajanahaar ||
The real words are the Words of the Creator Lord.
ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਹਸਣਾ ਬਾਦਿ ॥
khaanaa peenaa hasanaa baadh ||
How useless are eating, drinking and laughing,
ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਯਾਦਿ ॥੧॥
jab lag ridhai na aaveh yaadh ||1||
if the Lord is not cherished in the heart! ||1||
ਤਉ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਕੇਹੀ ਕਿਆ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
tau paravaeh kehee kiaa keejai ||
Why should someone care for anything else,
ਜਨਮਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਲੀਜੀ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
janam janam kichh leejee leejai ||1|| rahaau ||
if throughout his life, he gathers in that which is truly worth gathering? ||1||Pause||
ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਮਤਾਗਲੁ ਮਤਾ ॥
man kee mat mataagal mataa ||
The intellect of the mind is like a drunken elephant.
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਬੋਲੀਐ ਸਭੁ ਖਤੋ ਖਤਾ ॥
jo kichh boleeaai sabh khato khataa ||
Whatever one utters is totally false, the most false of the false.
ਕਿਆ ਮੁਹੁ ਲੈ ਕੀਚੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
kiaa muh lai keechai aradhaas ||
So what face should we put on to offer our prayer,
ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਸਾਖੀ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੨॥
paap pu(n)n dhui saakhee paas ||2||
when both virtue and vice are close at hand as witnesses? ||2||
ਜੈਸਾ ਤੂੰ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੈਸਾ ਕੋ ਹੋਇ ॥
jaisaa too(n) kareh taisaa ko hoi ||
As You make us, so we become.
ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
tujh bin dhoojaa naahee koi ||
Without You, there is no other at all.
ਜੇਹੀ ਤੂੰ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੇਹੀ ਕੋ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
jehee too(n) mat dheh tehee ko paavai ||
As is the understanding which You bestow, so do we receive.
ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
tudh aape bhaavai tivai chalaavai ||3||
As it pleases Your Will, so do You lead us. ||3||
ਰਾਗ ਰਤਨ ਪਰੀਆ ਪਰਵਾਰ ॥
raag ratan pareeaa paravaar ||
The divine crystalline harmonies, their consorts, and their celestial families
ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਾਰ ॥
tis vich upajai a(n)mrit saar ||
from them, the essence of Ambrosial Nectar is produced.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤੇ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥
naanak karate kaa ih dhan maal ||
O Nanak, this is the wealth and property of the Creator Lord.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਏਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੯॥
je ko boojhai eh beechaar ||4||9||
If only this essential reality were understood! ||4||9||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Aasaa, First Mehla:
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਅਪਨੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ਤਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਖੀਆ ਕਾਜੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥
kar kirapaa apanai ghar aaiaa taa mil sakheeaa kaaj rachaiaa ||
When by His Grace He came to my home, then my companions met together to celebrate my marriage.
ਖੇਲੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਮਨਿ ਅਨਦੁ ਭਇਆ ਸਹੁ ਵੀਆਹਣ ਆਇਆ ॥੧॥
khel dhekh man anadh bhiaa sahu veeaahan aaiaa ||1||
Beholding this play, my mind became blissful; my Husband Lord has come to marry me. ||1||
ਗਾਵਹੁ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਕਾਮਣੀ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
gaavahu gaavahu kaamanee bibek beechaar ||
So sing - yes, sing the songs of wisdom and reflection, O brides.
ਹਮਰੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
hamarai ghar aaiaa jagajeevan bhataar ||1|| rahaau ||
My spouse, the Life of the world, has come into my home. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਹਮਰਾ ਵੀਆਹੁ ਜਿ ਹੋਆ ਜਾਂ ਸਹੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
guroo dhuaarai hamaraa veeaahu j hoaa jaa(n) sahu miliaa taa(n) jaaniaa ||
When I was married within the Gurdwara, the Guru's Gate, I met my Husband Lord, and I came to know Him.
ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਕਾ ਮਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਰਵਿਆ ਹੈ ਆਪੁ ਗਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੨॥
tih lokaa meh sabadh raviaa hai aap giaa man maaniaa ||2||
The Word of His Shabad is pervading the three worlds; when my ego was quieted, my mind became happy. ||2||
ਆਪਣਾ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਆਪਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ਹੋਰਨਿ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
aapanaa kaaraj aap savaare horan kaaraj na hoiee ||
He Himself arranges His own affairs; His affairs cannot be arranged by anyone else.
ਜਿਤੁ ਕਾਰਜਿ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਦਇਆ ਧਰਮੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੩॥
jit kaaraj sat sa(n)tokh dhiaa dharam hai gurmukh boojhai koiee ||3||
By the affair of this marriage, truth, contentment, mercy and faith are produced; but how rare is that Gurmukh who understands it! ||3||
ਭਨਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਇ ॥
bhanat naanak sabhanaa kaa pir eko soi ||
Says Nanak, that Lord alone is the Husband of all.
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸਾ ਸੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੧੦॥
jis no nadhar kare saa sohaagan hoi ||4||10||
She, upon whom He casts His Glance of Grace, becomes the happy soul-bride. ||4||10||

Aasaa, First Mehla:
ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਬਨੁ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
girahu ban samasar sahaj subhai ||
Home and forest are the same, for one who dwells in the balance of intuitive peace and poise.
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਗਤੁ ਭਈ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਠਾਇ ॥
dhuramat gat bhiee keerat Thai ||
His evil-mindedness departs, and the Praises of God take its place.
ਸਚ ਪਉੜੀ ਸਾਚਉ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਂਉ ॥
sach pauRee saachau mukh naa(n)au ||
To chant the True Name with one's mouth is the true ladder.
