ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਕਤਹੂੰ ਨਾਹੀ ਖਸਮੈ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਣਾ ॥
ni(n)dhak kee gat katahoo(n) naahee khasamai evai bhaanaa ||
The slanderer shall never attain emancipation; this is the Will of the Lord and Master.
ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਕਤਹੂੰ ਨਾਹੀ ਖਸਮੈ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਣਾ ॥

jo jo ni(n)dh kare sa(n)tan kee tiau sa(n)tan sukh maanaa ||3||
The more the Saints are slandered, the more they dwell in peace. ||3||
ਸੰਤਾ ਟੇਕ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤੂੰ ਸੰਤਨ ਕਾ ਸਹਾਈ ॥
sa(n)taa Tek tumaaree suaamee too(n) sa(n)tan kaa sahaiee ||
The Saints have Your Support, O Lord and Master; You are the Saints' Help and Support.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਤ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਦੀਏ ਰੁੜਾਈ ॥੪॥੨॥੪੧॥
kahu naanak sa(n)t har raakhe ni(n)dhak dhe'ee ruRaiee ||4||2||41||
Says Nanak, the Saints are saved by the Lord; the slanderers are drowned in the deep. ||4||2||41||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
aasaa mahalaa panjavaa ||
Aasaa, Fifth Mehla:
ਬਾਹਰੁ ਧੋਇ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਦੁਇ ਠਉਰ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਖੋਏ ॥
baahar dhoi a(n)tar man mailaa dhui Thaur apune khoe ||
He washes outwardly, but within, his mind is filthy; thus he loses his place in both worlds.
ਈਹਾ ਕਾਮਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਆਗੈ ਮੁਸਿ ਮੁਸਿ ਰੋਏ ॥੧॥
e'eehaa kaam karodh moh viaapiaa aagai mus mus roe ||1||
Here, he is engrossed in sexual desire, anger and emotional attachment; hereafter, he shall sigh and weep. ||1||
ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਭਜਨ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਹੈ ਹੋਰਾ ॥
govi(n)dh bhajan kee mat hai horaa ||
The way to vibrate and meditate on the Lord of the Universe is different.
ਵਰਮੀ ਮਾਰੀ ਸਾਪੁ ਨ ਮਰਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਸੁਨਈ ਡੋਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
varamee maaree saap na mariee naam na suniee ddoraa ||1|| rahaau ||
Destroying the snake-hole, the snake is not killed; the deaf person does not hear the Lord's Name. ||1||Pause||
ਮਾਇਆ ਕੀ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਛੋਡਿ ਗਵਾਈ ਭਗਤੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
maiaa kee kirat chhodd gavaiee bhagatee saar na jaanai ||
He renounces the affairs of Maya, but he does not appreciate the value of devotional worship.
ਬੇਦ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਕਉ ਤਰਕਨਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਤਤੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਨੈ ॥੨॥
bedh saasatr kau tarakan laagaa tat jog na pachhaanai ||2||
He finds fault with the Vedas and the Shaastras, and does not know the essence of Yoga. ||2||
ਉਘਰਿ ਗਇਆ ਜੈਸਾ ਖੋਟਾ ਢਬੂਆ ਨਦਰਿ ਸਰਾਫਾ ਆਇਆ ॥
aughar giaa jaisaa khoTaa ddabooaa nadhar saraafaa aaiaa ||
He stands exposed, like a counterfeit coin, when inspected by the Lord, the Assayer.
ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਉਸ ਤੇ ਕਹਾ ਛਪਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
a(n)tarajaamee sabh kichh jaanai us te kahaa chhapaiaa ||3||
The Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts, knows everything; how can we hide anything from Him? ||3||
ਕੂੜਿ ਕਪਟਿ ਬੰਚਿ ਨਿੰਮੁਨੀਆਦਾ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਗਇਆ ਤਤਕਾਲੇ ॥
kooR kapaT ba(n)ch ni(n)muneeaadhaa binas giaa tatakaale ||
Through falsehood, fraud and deceit, the mortal collapses in an instant - he has no foundation at all.
ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਨਕਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਅਪਨੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਦੇਖੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥੪॥੩॥੪੨॥
sat sat sat naanak kahiaa apanai hiradhai dhekh samaale ||4||3||42||
Truly, truly, truly, Nanak speaks; look within your own heart, and realize this. ||4||3||42||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
aasaa mahalaa panjavaa ||
Aasaa, Fifth Mehla:
ਉਦਮੁ ਕਰਤ ਹੋਵੈ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾਚੈ ਆਪੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥
audham karat hovai man niramal naachai aap nivaare ||
Making the effort, the mind becomes pure; in this dance, the self is silenced.
ਪੰਚ ਜਨਾ ਲੇ ਵਸਗਤਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
pa(n)ch janaa le vasagat raakhai man meh eka(n)kaare ||1||
The five passions are kept under control, and the One Lord dwells in the mind. ||1||
ਤੇਰਾ ਜਨੁ ਨਿਰਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
teraa jan nirat kare gun gaavai ||
Your humble servant dances and sings Your Glorious Praises.
ਰਬਾਬੁ ਪਖਾਵਜ ਤਾਲ ਘੁੰਘਰੂ ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
rabaab pakhaavaj taal ghu(n)gharoo anahadh sabadh vajaavai ||1|| rahaau ||
He plays upon the guitar, tambourine and cymbals, and the unstruck sound current of the Shabad resounds. ||1||Pause||
ਪ੍ਰਥਮੇ ਮਨੁ ਪਰਬੋਧੈ ਅਪਨਾ ਪਾਛੈ ਅਵਰ ਰੀਝਾਵੈ ॥
prathame man parabodhai apanaa paachhai avar reejhaavai ||
First, he instructs his own mind, and then, he leads others.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਜਪੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਜਾਪੈ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਸਗਲ ਸੁਨਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
raam naam jap hiradhai jaapai mukh te sagal sunaavai ||2||
He chants the Lord's Name and meditates on it in his heart; with his mouth, he announces it to all. ||2||
ਕਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਚਰਨ ਪਖਾਰੈ ਸੰਤ ਧੂਰਿ ਤਨਿ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
kar sa(n)g saadhoo charan pakhaarai sa(n)t dhoor tan laavai ||
He joins the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and washes their feet; he applies the dust of the Saints to his body
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪਿ ਧਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਆਗੈ ਸਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
man tan arap dhare gur aagai sat padhaarath paavai ||3||
He surrenders his mind and body, and places them before the Guru; thus, he obtains the true wealth. ||3||
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਸੁਨੈ ਪੇਖੈ ਲਾਇ ਸਰਧਾ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਾਗੈ ॥
jo jo sunai pekhai lai saradhaa taa kaa janam maran dhukh bhaagai ||
Whoever listens to, and beholds the Guru with faith, shall see his pains of birth and death taken away.
ਐਸੀ ਨਿਰਤਿ ਨਰਕ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਗੈ ॥੪॥੪॥੪੩॥
aaisee nirat narak nivaarai naanak gurmukh jaagai ||4||4||43||
Such a dance eliminates hell; O Nanak, the Gurmukh remains wakeful. ||4||4||43||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Aasaa, Fifth Mehla:
ਅਧਮ ਚੰਡਾਲੀ ਭਈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣੀ ਸੂਦੀ ਤੇ ਸ੍ਰੇਸਟਾਈ ਰੇ ॥
adham cha(n)ddaalee bhiee brahamanee soodhee te sresaTaiee re ||
The lowly outcaste becomes a Brahmin, and the untouchable sweeper becomes pure and sublime. The castes mentioned here refer to stages of spiritual evolution.
ਪਾਤਾਲੀ ਆਕਾਸੀ ਸਖਨੀ ਲਹਬਰ ਬੂਝੀ ਖਾਈ ਰੇ ॥੧॥
paataalee aakaasee sakhanee lahabar boojhee khaiee re ||1||
The burning desire of the nether regions and the etheric realms is finally quenched and extinguished. ||1||
ਘਰ ਕੀ ਬਿਲਾਈ ਅਵਰ ਸਿਖਾਈ ਮੂਸਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਡਰਾਈ ਰੇ ॥
ghar kee bilaiee avar sikhaiee moosaa dhekh ddaraiee re ||
The house-cat has been taught otherwise, and is hesitant upon seeing the mouse. The house cat is symbolic of the mind in this body and the mouse is symbolic of material gains.
ਅਜ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਕੀਨੋ ਕੇਹਰਿ ਕੂਕਰ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਲਗਾਈ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aj kai vas gur keeno kehar kookar tineh lagaiee re ||1|| rahaau ||
The Guru has put the tiger under the control of the goat, and now, the dog eats grass. ||1||Pause|| Tiger is symbolic of Ego, goat is symbolic of humility. Dog represents the dark attributes (tamo gun) and grass represents the harmonious attributes (sato gun).
ਬਾਝੁ ਥੂਨੀਆ ਛਪਰਾ ਥਾਮਿੑਆ ਨੀਘਰਿਆ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਰੇ ॥
baajh thooneeaa chhaparaa thaami(h)aa neeghariaa ghar paiaa re ||
Without pillars, the roof is supported, and the homeless wandering mind has found a home. Pillars represent material rewards, roof represents the stability of mind.
ਬਿਨੁ ਜੜੀਏ ਲੈ ਜੜਿਓ ਜੜਾਵਾ ਥੇਵਾ ਅਚਰਜੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਰੇ ॥੨॥
bin jaRe'e lai jaRio jaRaavaa thevaa acharaj laiaa re ||2||
Without any jeweler, the jewelry has been set, and the wonderful stone of naam shines forth. ||2||
ਦਾਦੀ ਦਾਦਿ ਨ ਪਹੁਚਨਹਾਰਾ ਚੂਪੀ ਨਿਰਨਉ ਪਾਇਆ ਰੇ ॥
dhaadhee dhaadh na pahuchanahaaraa choopee niranau paiaa re ||
The claimant who keeps on complaining does not find justice, but by becoming calm he understands the justice in creation.
ਮਾਲਿ ਦੁਲੀਚੈ ਬੈਠੀ ਲੇ ਮਿਰਤਕੁ ਨੈਨ ਦਿਖਾਲਨੁ ਧਾਇਆ ਰੇ ॥੩॥
maal dhuleechai baiThee le mritak nain dhikhaalan dhaiaa re ||3||
The ego that used to sit on costly carpets has died and the tendency to glare at others has gone away. ||3|| costly carpets is symbolism for place of consequence.
