ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਉ ॥
gur parasaadhee karam kamaau ||
By Guru's Grace, perform good deeds.
ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥੫॥
naame raataa har gun gaau ||5||
Imbued with the Naam, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5||
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥
gur sevaa te aap pachhaataa ||
Serving the Guru, I have come to understand myself.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥
a(n)mirat naam vasiaa sukhadhaataa ||
The Ambrosial Naam, the Giver of Peace, abides within my mind.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤਾ ॥੬॥
anadhin baanee naame raataa ||6||
Night and day, I am imbued with the Word of the Guru's Bani, and the Naam. ||6||
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਲਾਏ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
meraa prabh laae taa ko laagai ||
When my God attaches someone to Him, only then is that person attached.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਸਬਦੇ ਜਾਗੈ ॥
haumai maare sabadhe jaagai ||
Conquering ego, he remains awake to the Word of the Shabad.
ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਆਗੈ ॥੭॥
aaithai othai sadhaa sukh aagai ||7||
Here and hereafter, he enjoys lasting peace. ||7||
ਮਨੁ ਚੰਚਲੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
man cha(n)chal bidh naahee jaanai ||
The fickle mind does not know the way.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮੈਲਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
manmukh mailaa sabadh na pachhaanai ||
The filthy self-willed manmukh does not understand the Shabad.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥੮॥
gurmukh niramal naam vakhaanai ||8||
The Gurmukh chants the Immaculate Naam. ||8||
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਆਗੈ ਕਰੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
har jeeau aagai karee aradhaas ||
I offer my prayer to the Lord,
ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥
saadhoo jan sa(n)gat hoi nivaas ||
that I might dwell in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਦੁਖ ਕਾਟੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ॥੯॥
kilavikh dhukh kaaTe har naam pragaas ||9||
There, sins and sufferings are erased, and one is illumined with the Lord's Name. ||9||
ਕਰਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਆਚਾਰੁ ਪਰਾਤਾ ॥
kar beechaar aachaar paraataa ||
In reflective meditation, I have come to love good conduct.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
satigur bachanee eko jaataa ||
Through the Word of the True Guru, I recognize the One Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥੧੦॥੭॥
naanak raam naam man raataa ||10||7||
O Nanak, my mind is imbued with the Lord's Name. ||10||7||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
aasaa mahalaa pehilaa ||
Aasaa, First Mehla:
ਮਨੁ ਮੈਗਲੁ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ॥
man maigal saakat dhevaanaa ||
The mind of the faithless cynic is like a crazy elephant.
ਬਨ ਖੰਡਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਹੈਰਾਨਾ ॥
ban kha(n)dd maiaa moh hairaanaa ||
It wanders around the forest, distracted by attachment to Maya.
ਇਤ ਉਤ ਜਾਹਿ ਕਾਲ ਕੇ ਚਾਪੇ ॥
eit ut jaeh kaal ke chaape ||
It goes here and there, hounded by death.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹੈ ਘਰੁ ਆਪੇ ॥੧॥
gurmukh khoj lahai ghar aape ||1||
The Gurmukh seeks, and finds his own home. ||1||
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੈ ਮਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਠਉਰਾ ॥
bin gur sabadhai man nahee Thauraa ||
Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the mind finds no place of rest.
ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਤਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਅਵਰ ਤਿਆਗਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਉਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
simarahu raam naam at niramal avar tiaagahu haumai kauraa ||1|| rahaau ||
Remember in meditation the Lord's Name, the most pure and sublime; renounce your bitter egotism. ||1||Pause||
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਉ ਰਹਸੀ ॥
eih man mugadh kahahu kiau rahasee ||
Tell me, how can this stupid mind be rescued?
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਮਝੇ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਹਸੀ ॥
bin samajhe jam kaa dhukh sahasee ||
Without understanding, it shall suffer the pains of death.
ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੈ ॥
aape bakhase satigur melai ||
The Lord Himself forgives us, and unites us with the True Guru.
ਕਾਲੁ ਕੰਟਕੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਪੇਲੈ ॥੨॥
kaal ka(n)Tak maare sach pelai ||2||
The True Lord conquers and overcomes the tortures of death. ||2||
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਧਰਮਾ ॥
eih man karamaa ih man dharamaa ||
This mind commits its deeds of karma, and this mind follows the Dharma.
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਤੇ ਜਨਮਾ ॥
eih man pa(n)ch tat te janamaa ||
This mind is born of the five elements.
ਸਾਕਤੁ ਲੋਭੀ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੂੜਾ ॥
saakat lobhee ih man mooRaa ||
This foolish mind is perverted and greedy.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਮਨੁ ਰੂੜਾ ॥੩॥
gurmukh naam japai man rooRaa ||3||
Chanting the Naam, the mind of the Gurmukh becomes beautiful. ||3||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਅਸਥਾਨੇ ਸੋਈ ॥
gurmukh man asathaane soiee ||
The mind of the Gurmukh finds the Lord's home.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
gurmukh tirabhavan sojhee hoiee ||
The Gurmukh comes to know the three worlds.
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਭੋਗੀ ਤਪੁ ਤਾਪੈ ॥
eih man jogee bhogee tap taapai ||
This mind is a Yogi, an enjoyer, a practicer of austerities.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚੀਨੈੑ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪੈ ॥੪॥
gurmukh cheenai(h) har prabh aapai ||4||
The Gurmukh understands the Lord God Himself. ||4||
ਮਨੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਿਆਗੀ ॥
man bairaagee haumai tiaagee ||
This mind is a detached renunciate, forsaking egotism.
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਮਨਸਾ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
ghaT ghaT manasaa dhubidhaa laagee ||
Desire and duality afflict each and every heart.
ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚਾਖੈ ॥
raam rasain gurmukh chaakhai ||
The Gurmukh drinks in the Lord's sublime essence;
ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮਹਲੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖੈ ॥੫॥
dhar ghar mahalee har pat raakhai ||5||
at His Door, in the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, He preserves his honor. ||5||
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਸੂਰ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਾਮਿ ॥
eih man raajaa soor sa(n)graam ||
This mind is the king, the hero of cosmic battles.
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ॥
eih man nirabhau gurmukh naam ||
The mind of the Gurmukh becomes fearless through the Naam.
ਮਾਰੇ ਪੰਚ ਅਪੁਨੈ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਏ ॥
maare pa(n)ch apunai vas ke'ee ||
Overpowering and subduing the five passions,
ਹਉਮੈ ਗ੍ਰਾਸਿ ਇਕਤੁ ਥਾਇ ਕੀਏ ॥੬॥
haumai graas ikat thai ke'ee ||6||
holding ego in its grip, it confines them to one place. ||6||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਗ ਸੁਆਦ ਅਨ ਤਿਆਗੇ ॥
gurmukh raag suaadh an tiaage ||
The Gurmukh renounces other songs and tastes.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਜਾਗੇ ॥
gurmukh ih man bhagatee jaage ||
The mind of the Gurmukh is awakened to devotion.
ਅਨਹਦ ਸੁਣਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
anahadh sun maaniaa sabadh veechaaree ||
Hearing the unstruck music of the sound current, this mind contemplates the Shabad, and accepts it.
ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨਿੑ ਭਏ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ॥੭॥
aatam cheeni(h) bhe nira(n)kaaree ||7||
Understanding itself, this soul becomes attuned to the Formless Lord. ||7||
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
eih man niramal dhar ghar soiee ||
This mind becomes immaculately pure, in the Court and the Home of the Lord.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਉ ਧੁਨਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
gurmukh bhagat bhaau dhun hoiee ||
The Gurmukh shows his love through loving devotional worship.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ahinis har jas gur parasaadh ||
Night and day, by Guru's Grace, sing the Lord's Praises.
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ॥੮॥
ghaT ghaT so prabh aadh jugaadh ||8||
God dwells in each and every heart, since the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages. ||8||
ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਤਾ ॥
raam rasain ih man maataa ||
This mind is intoxicated with the sublime essence of the Lord;
ਸਰਬ ਰਸਾਇਣੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
sarab rasain gurmukh jaataa ||
The Gurmukh realizes the essence of totality.
ਭਗਤਿ ਹੇਤੁ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ॥
bhagat het gur charan nivaasaa ||
For the sake of devotional worship, he dwells at the Guru's Feet.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੇ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੯॥੮॥
naanak har jan ke dhaasan dhaasaa ||9||8||
Nanak is the humble servant of the slave of the Lord's slaves. ||9||8||
