ਥਾਨ ਮੁਕਾਮ ਜਲੇ ਬਿਜ ਮੰਦਰ ਮੁਛਿ ਮੁਛਿ ਕੁਇਰ ਰੁਲਾਇਆ ॥
thaan mukaam jale bij ma(n)dhar muchh muchh kuir rulaiaa ||
He burned the rest-houses and the ancient temples; he cut the princes limb from limb, and cast them into the dust.
ਕੋਈ ਮੁਗਲੁ ਨ ਹੋਆ ਅੰਧਾ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਰਚਾ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
koiee mugal na hoaa a(n)dhaa kinai na parachaa laiaa ||4||
None of the Mugals went blind, and no one performed any miracle. ||4||
ਮੁਗਲ ਪਠਾਣਾ ਭਈ ਲੜਾਈ ਰਣ ਮਹਿ ਤੇਗ ਵਗਾਈ ॥
mugal paThaanaa bhiee laRaiee ran meh teg vagaiee ||
The battle raged between the Mugals and the Pat'haans, and the swords clashed on the battlefield.
ਓਨੑੀ ਤੁਪਕ ਤਾਣਿ ਚਲਾਈ ਓਨੑੀ ਹਸਤਿ ਚਿੜਾਈ ॥
on(h)ee tupak taan chalaiee on(h)ee hasat chiRaiee ||
They took aim and fired their guns, and they attacked with their elephants.
ਜਿਨੑ ਕੀ ਚੀਰੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਟੀ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਮਰਣਾ ਭਾਈ ॥੫॥
jin(h) kee cheeree dharageh paaTee tin(h)aa maranaa bhaiee ||5||
Those men whose letters were torn in the Lord's Court, were destined to die, O Siblings of Destiny. ||5||
ਇਕ ਹਿੰਦਵਾਣੀ ਅਵਰ ਤੁਰਕਾਣੀ ਭਟਿਆਣੀ ਠਕੁਰਾਣੀ ॥
eik hi(n)dhavaanee avar turakaanee bhaTiaanee Thakuraanee ||
The Hindu women, the Muslim women, the Bhattis and the Rajputs
ਇਕਨੑਾ ਪੇਰਣ ਸਿਰ ਖੁਰ ਪਾਟੇ ਇਕਨੑਾ ਵਾਸੁ ਮਸਾਣੀ ॥
eikan(h)aa peran sir khur paaTe ikan(h)aa vaas masaanee ||
some had their robes torn away, from head to foot, while others came to dwell in the cremation ground.
ਜਿਨੑ ਕੇ ਬੰਕੇ ਘਰੀ ਨ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਨੑ ਕਿਉ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ॥੬॥
jin(h) ke ba(n)ke gharee na aaiaa tin(h) kiau rain vihaanee ||6||
Their husbands did not return home - how did they pass their night? ||6||
ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਈਐ ॥
aape kare karaae karataa kis no aakh sunaieeaai ||
The Creator Himself acts, and causes others to act. Unto whom should we complain?
ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਹੋਵੈ ਕਿਸ ਥੈ ਜਾਇ ਰੂਆਈਐ ॥
dhukh sukh terai bhaanai hovai kis thai jai rooaaieeaai ||
Pleasure and pain come by Your Will; unto whom should we go and cry?
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਏ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੭॥੧੨॥
hukamee hukam chalaae vigasai naanak likhiaa paieeaai ||7||12||
The Commander issues His Command, and is pleased. O Nanak, we receive what is written in our destiny. ||7||12||

ਆਸਾ ਕਾਫੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਘਰੁ ੮ ਅਸਟਪਦੀਆ ॥
aasaa kaafee mahalaa pehilaa ghar atthvaa asaTapadheeaa ||
Aasaa, Kaafee, First Mehla, Eighth House, Ashtpadheeyaa:
ਜੈਸੇ ਗੋਇਲਿ ਗੋਇਲੀ ਤੈਸੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
jaise goil goilee taise sa(n)saaraa ||
As the shepherd is in the field for only a short time, so is one in the world.
ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਆਦਮੀ ਬਾਂਧਹਿ ਘਰ ਬਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
kooR kamaaveh aadhamee baa(n)dheh ghar baaraa ||1||
Practicing falsehood, they build their homes. ||1||
ਜਾਗਹੁ ਜਾਗਹੁ ਸੂਤਿਹੋ ਚਲਿਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaagahu jaagahu sootiho chaliaa vanajaaraa ||1|| rahaau ||
Wake up! Wake up! O sleepers, see that the travelling merchant is leaving. ||1||Pause||
ਨੀਤ ਨੀਤ ਘਰ ਬਾਂਧੀਅਹਿ ਜੇ ਰਹਣਾ ਹੋਈ ॥
neet neet ghar baa(n)dhe'eeh je rahanaa hoiee ||
Go ahead and build your houses, if you think you will stay here forever and ever.
ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਵੈ ਜੀਉ ਚਲਸੀ ਜੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੨॥
pi(n)dd pavai jeeau chalasee je jaanai koiee ||2||
The body shall fall, and the soul shall depart; if only they knew this. ||2||
ਓਹੀ ਓਹੀ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਹੁ ਹੈ ਹੋਸੀ ਸੋਈ ॥
ohee ohee kiaa karahu hai hosee soiee ||
Why do you cry out and mourn for the dead? The Lord is, and shall always be.
ਤੁਮ ਰੋਵਹੁਗੇ ਓਸ ਨੋ ਤੁਮੑ ਕਉ ਕਉਣੁ ਰੋਈ ॥੩॥
tum rovahuge os no tum(h) kau kaun roiee ||3||
You mourn for that person, but who will mourn for you? ||3||
ਧੰਧਾ ਪਿਟਿਹੁ ਭਾਈਹੋ ਤੁਮੑ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥
dha(n)dhaa piTih bhaieeho tum(h) kooR kamaavahu ||
You are engrossed in worldly entanglements, O Siblings of Destiny, and you are practicing falsehood.
ਓਹੁ ਨ ਸੁਣਈ ਕਤ ਹੀ ਤੁਮੑ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਣਾਵਹੁ ॥੪॥
oh na suniee kat hee tum(h) lok sunaavahu ||4||
The dead person does not hear anything at all; your cries are heard only by other people. ||4||
ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਸੁਤਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਾਗਾਏ ਸੋਈ ॥
jis te sutaa naanakaa jaagaae soiee ||
Only the Lord, who causes the mortal to sleep, O Nanak, can awaken him again.
ਜੇ ਘਰੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਾਂ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੫॥
je ghar boojhai aapanaa taa(n) needh na hoiee ||5||
One who understands his true home, does not sleep. ||5||
ਜੇ ਚਲਦਾ ਲੈ ਚਲਿਆ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੰਪੈ ਨਾਲੇ ॥
je chaladhaa lai chaliaa kichh sa(n)pai naale ||
If the departing mortal can take his wealth with him,
ਤਾ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਹੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੈ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥੬॥
taa dhan sa(n)chahu dhekh kai boojhahu beechaare ||6||
then go ahead and gather wealth yourself. See this, reflect upon it, and understand. ||6||
ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਖਸੂਦੁ ਲੈਹੁ ਮਤ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਹੁ ॥
vanaj karahu makhasoodh laih mat pachhotaavahu ||
Make your deals, and obtain the true merchandise, or else you shall regret it later.
ਅਉਗਣ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਕਰਹੁ ਐਸੇ ਤਤੁ ਪਰਾਵਹੁ ॥੭॥
aaugan chhoddahu gun karahu aaise tat paraavahu ||7||
Abandon your vices, and practice virtue, and you shall obtain the essence of reality. ||7||
ਧਰਮੁ ਭੂਮਿ ਸਤੁ ਬੀਜੁ ਕਰਿ ਐਸੀ ਕਿਰਸ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥
dharam bhoom sat beej kar aaisee kiras kamaavahu ||
Plant the seed of Truth in the soil of Dharmic faith, and practice such farming.
ਤਾਂ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਜਾਣੀਅਹੁ ਲਾਹਾ ਲੈ ਜਾਵਹੁ ॥੮॥
taa(n) vaapaaree jaaneeahu laahaa lai jaavahu ||8||
Only then will you be known as a merchant, if you take your profits with you. ||8||
ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
karam hovai satigur milai boojhai beechaaraa ||
If the Lord shows His Mercy, one meets the True Guru; contemplating Him, one comes to understand.
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਸੁਣੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਾਮੇ ਬਿਉਹਾਰਾ ॥੯॥
naam vakhaanai sune naam naame biauhaaraa ||9||
Then, one chants the Naam, hears the Naam, and deals only in the Naam. ||9||
ਜਿਉ ਲਾਹਾ ਤੋਟਾ ਤਿਵੈ ਵਾਟ ਚਲਦੀ ਆਈ ॥
jiau laahaa toTaa tivai vaaT chaladhee aaiee ||
As is the profit, so is the loss; this is the way of the world.
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸਾਈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧੦॥੧੩॥
jo tis bhaavai naanakaa saiee vaddiaaiee ||10||13||
Whatever pleases His Will, O Nanak, is glory for me. ||10||13||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
aasaa mahalaa pehilaa ||
Aasaa, First Mehla:
ਚਾਰੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਢੂਢੀਆ ਕੋ ਨੀਮੑੀ ਮੈਡਾ ॥
chaare ku(n)ddaa ddooddeeaa ko neem(h)ee maiddaa ||
I have searched in the four directions, but no one is mine.
ਜੇ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਤੂ ਮੈ ਹਉ ਤੈਡਾ ॥੧॥
je tudh bhaavai saahibaa too mai hau taiddaa ||1||
If it pleases You, O Lord Master, then You are mine, and I am Yours. ||1||
ਦਰੁ ਬੀਭਾ ਮੈ ਨੀਮਿੑ ਕੋ ਕੈ ਕਰੀ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥
dhar beebhaa mai neemi(h) ko kai karee salaam ||
There is no other door for me; where shall I go to worship?
ਹਿਕੋ ਮੈਡਾ ਤੂ ਧਣੀ ਸਾਚਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
hiko maiddaa too dhanee saachaa mukh naam ||1|| rahaau ||
You are my only Lord; Your True Name is in my mouth. ||1||Pause||
ਸਿਧਾ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸਿਧ ਪੀਰ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ॥
sidhaa sevan sidh peer maageh ridh sidh ||
Some serve the Siddhas, the beings of spiritual perfection, and some serve spiritual teachers; they beg for wealth and miraculous powers.
ਮੈ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਰ ਬੁਧਿ ॥੨॥
mai ik naam na veesarai saache gur budh ||2||
May I never forget the Naam, the Name of the One Lord. This is the wisdom of the True Guru. ||2||
