ਹੁਕਮੀ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਇ ਦਰਗਹ ਭਾਣੀਐ ॥

hukame hee sir maar ba(n)dh rabaaneeaai ||5||
By His Command, God's slaves are hit over the head. ||5||
ਲਾਹਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਿਆਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਾਈਐ ॥
laahaa sach niaau man vasaieeaai ||
The profit is earned by enshrining Truth and justice in the mind.
ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ਗਰਬੁ ਵਞਾਈਐ ॥੬॥
likhiaa palai pai garab van(j)aieeaai ||6||
They obtain what is written in their destiny, and overcome pride. ||6||
ਮਨਮੁਖੀਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰ ਵਾਦਿ ਖਪਾਈਐ ॥
manmukheeaa sir maar vaadh khapaieeaai ||
The self-willed manmukhs are hit over the head, and consumed by conflict.
ਠਗਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਬੰਨਿੑ ਚਲਾਈਐ ॥੭॥
Thag muThee kooRiaar ba(n)ni(h) chalaieeaai ||7||
The cheaters are plundered by falsehood; they are chained and led away. ||7||
ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਇ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਹੀ ॥
saahib ridhai vasai na pachhotaavahee ||
Enshrine the Lord Master in your mind, and you shall not have to repent.
ਗੁਨਹਾਂ ਬਖਸਣਹਾਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਵਹੀ ॥੮॥
gunahaa(n) bakhasanahaar sabadh kamaavahee ||8||
He forgives our sins, when we practice the Teachings of the Guru's Word. ||8||
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੰਗੈ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਘਾਲੀਐ ॥
naanak ma(n)gai sach gurmukh ghaaleeaai ||
Nanak begs for the True Name, which is obtained by the Gurmukh.
ਮੈ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੀਐ ॥੯॥੧੬॥
mai tujh bin avar na koi nadhar nihaaleeaai ||9||16||
Without You, I have no other at all; please, bless me with Your Glance of Grace. ||9||16||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Aasaa, First Mehla:
ਕਿਆ ਜੰਗਲੁ ਢੂਢੀ ਜਾਇ ਮੈ ਘਰਿ ਬਨੁ ਹਰੀਆਵਲਾ ॥
kiaa ja(n)gal ddooddee jai mai ghar ban hareeaavalaa ||
Why should I go searching in the forests, when the woods of my home are so green?
ਸਚਿ ਟਿਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇ ਸਬਦਿ ਉਤਾਵਲਾ ॥੧॥
sach Tikai ghar aai sabadh utaavalaa ||1||
The True Word of the Shabad has instantaneously come and settled in my heart. ||1||
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਸੋਇ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
jeh dhekhaa teh soi avar na jaaneeaai ||
Wherever I look, there He is; I know no other.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur kee kaar kamai mahal pachhaaneeaai ||1|| rahaau ||
Working for the Guru, one realizes the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||1||Pause||
ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ਸਚੁ ਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਈ ॥
aap milaavai sach taa man bhaaviee ||
The True Lord blends us with Himself, when it is pleasing to His Mind.
ਚਲੈ ਸਦਾ ਰਜਾਇ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਵਈ ॥੨॥
chalai sadhaa rajai a(n)k samaaviee ||2||
One who ever walks in accordance with His Will, merges into His Being. ||2||
ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਵਸਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
sachaa saahib man vasai vasiaa man soiee ||
When the True Lord dwells in the mind, that mind flourishes.
ਆਪੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਦੇ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੩॥
aape dhe vaddiaaieeaa dhe toT na hoiee ||3||
He Himself grants greatness; His Gifts are never exhausted. ||3||
ਅਬੇ ਤਬੇ ਕੀ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਕਿਉ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
abe tabe kee chaakaree kiau dharageh paavai ||
Serving this and that person, how can one obtain the Lord's Court?
ਪਥਰ ਕੀ ਬੇੜੀ ਜੇ ਚੜੈ ਭਰ ਨਾਲਿ ਬੁਡਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
pathar kee beRee je chaRai bhar naal buddaavai ||4||
If someone embarks on a boat of stone, he shall drown with its cargo. ||4||
ਆਪਨੜਾ ਮਨੁ ਵੇਚੀਐ ਸਿਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਨਾਲੇ ॥
aapanaRaa man vecheeaai sir dheejai naale ||
So offer your mind, and surrender your head with it.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਅਪਨਾ ਘਰੁ ਭਾਲੇ ॥੫॥
gurmukh vasat pachhaaneeaai apanaa ghar bhaale ||5||
The Gurmukh realizes the true essence, and finds the home of his own self. ||5||
ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਤਿਨਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਕੀਆ ॥
ja(n)man maranaa aakheeaai tin karatai keeaa ||
People discuss birth and death; the Creator created this.
ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਮਰਿ ਰਹੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਥੀਆ ॥੬॥
aap gavaiaa mar rahe fir maran na theeaa ||6||
Those who conquer their selfhood and remain dead, shall never have to die again. ||6||
ਸਾਈ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਣੀ ਧੁਰ ਕੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਈ ॥
saiee kaar kamaavanee dhur kee furamaiee ||
Do those deeds which the Primal Lord has ordered for you.
ਜੇ ਮਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਕਿਨਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੭॥
je man satigur dhe milai kin keemat paiee ||7||
If one surrenders his mind upon meeting the True Guru, who can estimate its value? ||7||
ਰਤਨਾ ਪਾਰਖੁ ਸੋ ਧਣੀ ਤਿਨਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
ratanaa paarakh so dhanee tin keemat paiee ||
That Lord Master is the Assayer of the jewel of the mind; He places the value on it.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੮॥੧੭॥
naanak saahib man vasai sachee vaddiaaiee ||8||17||
O Nanak, True is the Glory of that one, in whose mind the Lord Master dwells. ||8||17||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
aasaa mahalaa pehilaa ||
Aasaa, First Mehla:
ਜਿਨੑੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ॥
jin(h)ee naam visaariaa dhoojai bharam bhulaiee ||
Those who have forgotten the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are deluded by doubt and duality.
ਮੂਲੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਡਾਲੀ ਲਗੇ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਛਾਈ ॥੧॥
mool chhodd ddaalee lage kiaa paaveh chhaiee ||1||
Those who abandon the roots and cling to the branches, shall obtain only ashes. ||1||
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਜੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
bin naavai kiau chhooTeeaai je jaanai koiee ||
Without the Name, how can one be emancipated? Who knows this?
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmukh hoi ta chhooTeeaai manmukh pat khoiee ||1|| rahaau ||
One who becomes Gurmukh is emancipated; the self-willed manmukhs lose their honor. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਨੑੀ ਏਕੋ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਭਾਈ ॥
jin(h)ee eko seviaa pooree mat bhaiee ||
Those who serve the One Lord become perfect in their understanding, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨਾ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੨॥
aadh jugaadh nira(n)janaa jan har saranaiee ||2||
The Lord's humble servant finds Sanctuary in Him, the Immaculate One, from the very beginning, and throughout the ages. ||2||
ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਈ ॥
saahib meraa ek hai avar nahee bhaiee ||
My Lord and Master is the One; there is no other, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਾਚੇ ਪਰਥਾਈ ॥੩॥
kirapaa te sukh paiaa saache parathaiee ||3||
By the Grace of the True Lord, celestial peace is obtained. ||3||
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਕੇਤੀ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਏ ॥
gur bin kinai na paio ketee kahai kahaae ||
Without the Guru, no one has obtained Him, although many may claim to have done so.
ਆਪਿ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਵਾਟੜੀਂ ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥੪॥
aap dhikhaavai vaaTaRee(n) sachee bhagat dhiraRaae ||4||
He Himself reveals the Way, and implants true devotion within. ||4||
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਜੇ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਭੀ ਉਝੜਿ ਜਾਏ ॥
manmukh je samajhaieeaai bhee ujhaR jaae ||
Even if the self-willed manmukh is instructed, he stills goes into the wilderness.
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨ ਛੂਟਸੀ ਮਰਿ ਨਰਕ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੫॥
bin har naam na chhooTasee mar narak samaae ||5||
Without the Lord's Name, he shall not be emancipated; he shall die, and sink into hell. ||5||
ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਭਰਮਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਲੇਵੈ ॥
janam marai bharamaieeaai har naam na levai ||
He wanders through birth and death, and never chants the Lord's Name.
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵੈ ॥੬॥
taa kee keemat naa pavai bin gur kee sevai ||6||
He never realizes his own value, without serving the Guru. ||6||
