ਲਿਖੇ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਬੋਲਿ ਬੋਲਿ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥
likhe baajhahu surat naahee bol bol gavaieeaai ||
Without pre-ordained destiny, understanding is not attained; talking and babbling, one wastes his life away.
ਜਿਥੈ ਜਾਇ ਬਹੀਐ ਭਲਾ ਕਹੀਐ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਲਿਖਾਈਐ ॥
jithai jai baheeaai bhalaa kaheeaai surat sabadh likhaieeaai ||
Wherever you go and sit, speak well, and write the Word of the Shabad in your consciousness.
ਕਾਇਆ ਕੂੜਿ ਵਿਗਾੜਿ ਕਾਹੇ ਨਾਈਐ ॥੧॥
kaiaa kooR vigaaR kaahe naieeaai ||1||
Why bother to wash the body which is polluted by falsehood? ||1||
ਤਾ ਮੈ ਕਹਿਆ ਕਹਣੁ ਜਾ ਤੁਝੈ ਕਹਾਇਆ ॥
taa mai kahiaa kahan jaa tujhai kahaiaa ||
When I have spoken, I spoke as You made me speak.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
a(n)mrit har kaa naam merai man bhaiaa ||
The Ambrosial Name of the Lord is pleasing to my mind.
ਨਾਮੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਦੂਖਿ ਡੇਰਾ ਢਾਹਿਆ ॥
naam meeThaa maneh laagaa dhookh dderaa ddaahiaa ||
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, seems so sweet to my mind; it has destroyed the dwelling of pain.
ਸੂਖੁ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਆਇ ਵਸਿਆ ਜਾਮਿ ਤੈ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਆ ॥
sookh man meh aai vasiaa jaam tai furamaiaa ||
Peace came to dwell in my mind, when You gave the Order.
ਨਦਰਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਨਿ ਆਪੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
nadhar tudh aradhaas meree ji(n)n aap upaiaa ||
It is Yours to bestow Your Grace, and it is mine to speak this prayer; You created Yourself.
ਤਾ ਮੈ ਕਹਿਆ ਕਹਣੁ ਜਾ ਤੁਝੈ ਕਹਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
taa mai kahiaa kahan jaa tujhai kahaiaa ||2||
When I have spoken, I spoke as You made me speak. ||2||
ਵਾਰੀ ਖਸਮੁ ਕਢਾਏ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ॥
vaaree khasam kaddaae kirat kamaavanaa ||
The Lord and Master gives them their turn, according to the deeds they have done.
ਮੰਦਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਆਖਿ ਝਗੜਾ ਪਾਵਣਾ ॥
ma(n)dhaa kisai na aakh jhagaRaa paavanaa ||
Do not speak ill of others, or get involved in arguments.
ਨਹ ਪਾਇ ਝਗੜਾ ਸੁਆਮਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਆਪਿ ਆਪੁ ਵਞਾਵਣਾ ॥
neh pai jhagaRaa suaam setee aap aap van(j)aavanaa ||
Do not get into arguments with the Lord, or you shall ruin yourself.
ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਲਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਰੀਕੀ ਜਾਇ ਕਿਆ ਰੂਆਵਣਾ ॥
jis naal sa(n)gat kar sareekee jai kiaa rooaavanaa ||
If you challenge the One, with whom you must abide, you will cry in the end.
ਜੋ ਦੇਇ ਸਹਣਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਕਹਣਾ ਆਖਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਵਾਵਣਾ ॥
jo dhei sahanaa maneh kahanaa aakh naahee vaavanaa ||
Be satisfied with what God gives you; tell your mind not to complain uselessly.
ਵਾਰੀ ਖਸਮੁ ਕਢਾਏ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ॥੩॥
vaaree khasam kaddaae kirat kamaavanaa ||3||
The Lord and Master gives them their turn, according to the deeds they have done. ||3||
ਸਭ ਉਪਾਈਅਨੁ ਆਪਿ ਆਪੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥
sabh upaieean aap aape nadhar kare ||
He Himself created all, and He blesses then with His Glance of Grace.
ਕਉੜਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮਾਗੈ ਮੀਠਾ ਸਭ ਮਾਗੈ ॥
kauRaa koi na maagai meeThaa sabh maagai ||
No one asks for that which is bitter; everyone asks for sweets.
ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ਮੀਠਾ ਮੰਗਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਖਸਮ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ॥
sabh koi meeThaa ma(n)g dhekhai khasam bhaavai so kare ||
Let everyone ask for sweets, and behold, it is as the Lord wills.
ਕਿਛੁ ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਅਨੇਕ ਕਰਣੀ ਨਾਮ ਤੁਲਿ ਨ ਸਮਸਰੇ ॥
kichh pu(n)n dhaan anek karanee naam tul na samasare ||
Giving donations to charity, and performing various religious rituals are not equal to the contemplation of the Naam.
ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਕਦੇ ॥
naanakaa jin naam miliaa karam hoaa dhur kadhe ||
O Nanak, those who are blessed with the Naam have had such good karma pre-ordained.
ਸਭ ਉਪਾਈਅਨੁ ਆਪਿ ਆਪੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੪॥੧॥
sabh upaieean aap aape nadhar kare ||4||1||
He Himself created all, and He blesses them with His Glance of Grace. ||4||1||
ਵਡਹੰਸੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
vaddaha(n)s mahalaa pehilaa ||
Wadahans, First Mehla:
ਕਰਹੁ ਦਇਆ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣਾ ॥
karahu dhiaa teraa naam vakhaanaa ||
Show mercy to me, that I may chant Your Name.
ਸਭ ਉਪਾਈਐ ਆਪਿ ਆਪੇ ਸਰਬ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥
sabh upaieeaai aap aape sarab samaanaa ||
You Yourself created all, and You are pervading among all.
ਸਰਬੇ ਸਮਾਣਾ ਆਪਿ ਤੂਹੈ ਉਪਾਇ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਾਈਆ ॥
sarabe samaanaa aap toohai upai dha(n)dhai laieeaa ||
You Yourself are pervading among all, and You link them to their tasks.
ਇਕਿ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਕੀਏ ਰਾਜੇ ਇਕਨਾ ਭਿਖ ਭਵਾਈਆ ॥
eik tujh hee ke'ee raaje ikanaa bhikh bhavaieeaa ||
Some, You have made kings, while others go about begging.
ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਤੁਝੁ ਕੀਆ ਮੀਠਾ ਏਤੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣਾ ॥
lobh moh tujh keeaa meeThaa et bharam bhulaanaa ||
You have made greed and emotional attachment seem sweet; they are deluded by this delusion.
ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਹੁ ਅਪਣੀ ਤਾਮਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣਾ ॥੧॥
sadhaa dhiaa karahu apanee taam naam vakhaanaa ||1||
Be ever merciful to me; only then can I chant Your Name. ||1||
ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਦਾ ਮੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣਾ ॥
naam teraa hai saachaa sadhaa mai man bhaanaa ||
Your Name is True, and ever pleasing to my mind.
ਦੂਖੁ ਗਇਆ ਸੁਖੁ ਆਇ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥
dhookh giaa sukh aai samaanaa ||
My pains are dispelled, and I am permeated with peace.
ਗਾਵਨਿ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਸੁਘੜ ਸੁਜਾਣਾ ॥
gaavan sur nar sughaR sujaanaa ||
The angels, the mortals and the silent sages sing of You.
ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਸੁਘੜ ਸੁਜਾਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਜੋ ਤੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਹੇ ॥
sur nar sughaR sujaan gaaveh jo terai man bhaavahe ||
The angels, the mortals and the silent sages sing of You; they are pleasing to Your Mind.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੇ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਅਹਿਲਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਵਹੇ ॥
maiaa mohe cheteh naahee ahilaa janam gavaavahe ||
Enticed by Maya, they do not remember the Lord, and they waste away their lives in vain.
ਇਕਿ ਮੂੜ ਮੁਗਧ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਮੂਲੇ ਜੋ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਾਣਾ ॥
eik mooR mugadh na cheteh moole jo aaiaa tis jaanaa ||
Some fools and idiots never think of the Lord; whoever has come, shall have to go.
ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ਮੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣਾ ॥੨॥
naam teraa sadhaa saachaa soi mai man bhaanaa ||2||
Your Name is True, and ever pleasing to my mind. ||2||
ਤੇਰਾ ਵਖਤੁ ਸੁਹਾਵਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
teraa vakhat suhaavaa a(n)mrit teree baanee ||
Beauteous is Your time, O Lord; the Bani of Your Word is Ambrosial Nectar.
ਸੇਵਕ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਭਾਉ ਕਰਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਸਾਉ ਪਰਾਣੀ ॥
sevak seveh bhaau kar laagaa saau paraanee ||
Your servants serve You with love; these mortals are attached to Your essence.
ਸਾਉ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਤਿਨਾ ਲਾਗਾ ਜਿਨੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
saau praanee tinaa laagaa jinee a(n)mrit paiaa ||
Those mortals are attached to Your essence, who are blessed with the Ambrosial Name.
ਨਾਮਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਜੋਇ ਰਾਤੇ ਨਿਤ ਚੜਹਿ ਸਵਾਇਆ ॥
naam terai joi raate nit chaReh savaiaa ||
Those who are imbued with Your Name, prosper more and more, day by day.
ਇਕੁ ਕਰਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਜਾਮਿ ਨ ਏਕੁ ਪਛਾਣੀ ॥
eik karam dharam na hoi sa(n)jam jaam na ek pachhaanee ||
Some do not practice good deeds, or live righteously; nor do they practice self-restraint. They do not realize the One Lord.
ਵਖਤੁ ਸੁਹਾਵਾ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥੩॥
vakhat suhaavaa sadhaa teraa a(n)mirat teree baanee ||3||
Ever beauteous is Your time, O Lord; the Bani of Your Word is Ambrosial Nectar. ||3||
ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਨਾਵੈ ॥
hau balihaaree saache naavai ||
I am a sacrifice to the True Name.
