ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਕਉ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਬਪੁੜੋ ਇਨਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

This wretched world is caught in birth and death; in the love of duality, it has forgotten devotional worship of the Lord.

satigur milai ta gurmat paieeaai saakat baajee haaree jeeau ||3||
Meeting the True Guru, the Guru's Teachings are obtained; the faithless cynic loses the game of life. ||3||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋੜਿ ਨਿਰਾਰੇ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਗਰਭ ਮਝਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥
satigur ba(n)dhan toR niraare bahuR na garabh majhaaree jeeau ||
Breaking my bonds, the True Guru has set me free, and I shall not be cast into the womb of reincarnation again.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੮॥
naanak giaan ratan paragaasiaa har man vasiaa nira(n)kaaree jeeau ||4||8||
O Nanak, the jewel of spiritual wisdom shines forth, and the Lord, the Formless Lord, dwells within my mind. ||4||8||
ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Sorat'h, First Mehla:
ਜਿਸੁ ਜਲ ਨਿਧਿ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਤੁਮ ਜਗਿ ਆਏ ਸੋ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥
jis jal nidh kaaran tum jag aae so a(n)mrit gur paahee jeeau ||
The treasure of the Name, for which you have come into the world - that Ambrosial Nectar is with the Guru.
ਛੋਡਹੁ ਵੇਸੁ ਭੇਖ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਇਹੁ ਫਲੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥
chhoddahu ves bhekh chaturaiee dhubidhaa ih fal naahee jeeau ||1||
Renounce costumes, disguises and clever tricks; this fruit is not obtained by duplicity. ||1||
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਥਿਰੁ ਰਹੁ ਮਤੁ ਕਤ ਜਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥
man re thir rahu mat kat jaahee jeeau ||
O my mind, remain steady, and do not wander away.
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਢੂਢਤ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਘਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਘਟ ਮਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
baahar ddooddat bahut dhukh paaveh ghar a(n)mrit ghaT maahee jeeau || rahaau ||
By searching around on the outside, you shall only suffer great pain; the Ambrosial Nectar is found within the home of your own being. ||Pause||
ਅਵਗੁਣ ਛੋਡਿ ਗੁਣਾ ਕਉ ਧਾਵਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਪਛੁਤਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥
avagun chhodd gunaa kau dhaavahu kar avagun pachhutaahee jeeau ||
Renounce corruption, and seek virtue; committing sins, you shall only come to regret and repent.
ਸਰ ਅਪਸਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਕੀਚ ਬੁਡਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥
sar apasar kee saar na jaaneh fir fir keech buddaahee jeeau ||2||
You do not know the difference between good and evil; again and again, you sink into the mud. ||2||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਲੋਭ ਬਹੁ ਝੂਠੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਨਾਵਹੁ ਕਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥
a(n)tar mail lobh bahu jhooThe baahar naavahu kaahee jeeau ||
Within you is the great filth of greed and falsehood; why do you bother to wash your body on the outside?
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਸਦ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਤਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥
niramal naam japahu sadh gurmukh a(n)tar kee gat taahee jeeau ||3||
Chant the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord always, under Guru's Instruction; only then will your innermost being be emancipated. ||3||
ਪਰਹਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਤਿਆਗਹੁ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥
parahar lobh ni(n)dhaa kooR tiaagahu sach gur bachanee fal paahee jeeau ||
Let greed and slander be far away from you, and renounce falsehood; through the True Word of the Guru's Shabad, you shall obtain the true fruit.
ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੯॥
jiau bhaavai tiau raakhahu har jeeau jan naanak sabadh salaahee jeeau ||4||9||
As it pleases You, You preserve me, Dear Lord; servant Nanak sings the Praises of Your Shabad. ||4||9||
ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਪੰਚਪਦੇ ॥
soraTh mahalaa pehilaa pa(n)chapadhe ||
Sorat'h, First Mehla, Panch-Padhay:
ਅਪਨਾ ਘਰੁ ਮੂਸਤ ਰਾਖਿ ਨ ਸਾਕਹਿ ਕੀ ਪਰ ਘਰੁ ਜੋਹਨ ਲਾਗਾ ॥
apanaa ghar moosat raakh na saakeh kee par ghar johan laagaa ||
You cannot save your own home from being plundered; why do you spy on the houses of others?
ਘਰੁ ਦਰੁ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਜੇ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਹਿ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਲਾਗਾ ॥੧॥
ghar dhar raakheh je ras chaakheh jo gurmukh sevak laagaa ||1||
That Gurmukh who joins himself to the Guru's service, saves his own home, and tastes the Lord's Nectar. ||1||
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਸਮਝੁ ਕਵਨ ਮਤਿ ਲਾਗਾ ॥
man re samajh kavan mat laagaa ||
O mind, you must realize what your intellect is focused on.
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਅਨ ਰਸ ਲੋਭਾਨੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿ ਅਭਾਗਾ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naam visaar an ras lobhaane fir pachhutaeh abhaagaa || rahaau ||
Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, one is involved with other tastes; the unfortunate wretch shall come to regret it in the end. ||Pause||
ਆਵਤ ਕਉ ਹਰਖ ਜਾਤ ਕਉ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਇਹੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਲੇ ਲਾਗਾ ॥
aavat kau harakh jaat kau roveh ih dhukh sukh naale laagaa ||
When things come, he is pleased, but when they go, he weeps and wails; this pain and pleasure remains attached to him.
ਆਪੇ ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਭੋਗਿ ਭੋਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੋ ਅਨਰਾਗਾ ॥੨॥
aape dhukh sukh bhog bhogaavai gurmukh so anaraagaa ||2||
The Lord Himself causes him to enjoy pleasure and endure pain; the Gurmukh, however, remains unaffected. ||2||
ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਊਪਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਹੀਐ ਜਿਨਿ ਪੀਆ ਸੋ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਗਾ ॥
har ras uoopar avar kiaa kaheeaai jin peeaa so tirapataagaa ||
What else can be said to be above the subtle essence of the Lord? One who drinks it in is satisfied and satiated.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿਤ ਜਿਨਿ ਇਹੁ ਰਸੁ ਖੋਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਾਕਤ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਲਾਗਾ ॥੩॥
maiaa mohit jin ih ras khoiaa jaa saakat dhuramat laagaa ||3||
One who is lured by Maya loses this juice; that faithless cynic is tied to his evil-mindedness. ||3||
ਮਨ ਕਾ ਜੀਉ ਪਵਨਪਤਿ ਦੇਹੀ ਦੇਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਦੇਉ ਸਮਾਗਾ ॥
man kaa jeeau pavanapat dhehee dhehee meh dheau samaagaa ||
The Lord is the life of the mind, the Master of the breath of life; the Divine Lord is contained in the body.
ਜੇ ਤੂ ਦੇਹਿ ਤ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਗਾਈ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੈ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗਾ ॥੪॥
je too dheh ta har ras gaiee man tirapatai har liv laagaa ||4||
If You so bless us, Lord, then we sing Your Praises; the mind is satisfied and fulfilled, lovingly attached to the Lord. ||4||
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਜਮ ਭਉ ਭਾਗਾ ॥
saadhasa(n)gat meh har ras paieeaai gur miliaai jam bhau bhaagaa ||
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the subtle essence of the Lord is obtained; meeting the Guru, the fear of death departs.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਏ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਗਾ ॥੫॥੧੦॥
naanak raam naam jap gurmukh har paae masatak bhaagaa ||5||10||
O Nanak, chant the Name of the Lord, as Gurmukh; you shall obtain the Lord, and realize your pre-ordained destiny. ||5||10||
ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਧੁਰਾਹੂ ਬਿਨੁ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਉ ॥
sarab jeeaa sir lekh dhuraahoo bin lekhai nahee koiee jeeau ||
Destiny, pre-ordained by the Lord, looms over the heads of all beings; no one is without this pre-ordained destiny.
ਆਪਿ ਅਲੇਖੁ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਏ ਸੋਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥
aap alekh kudharat kar dhekhai hukam chalaae soiee jeeau ||1||
Only He Himself is beyond destiny; creating the creation by His creative power, He beholds it, and causes His Command to be followed. ||1||
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਜਪਹੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
man re raam japahu sukh hoiee ||
O mind, chant the Name of the Lord, and be at peace.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਸਰੇਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਭੁਗਤਾ ਸੋਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ahinis gur ke charan sarevahu har dhaataa bhugataa soiee || rahaau ||
Day and night, serve at the Guru's feet; the Lord is the Giver, and the Enjoyer. ||Pause||
