ਹਉਮੈ ਜਲਤੇ ਜਲਿ ਮੁਏ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਆਏ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
haumai jalate jal mue bhram aae dhoojai bhai ||
In the flames of egotism, he is burnt to death; he wanders in doubt and the love of duality.
ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਏ ਆਪਣੈ ਪੰਨੈ ਪਾਇ ॥
poorai satigur raakh le'ee aapanai pa(n)nai pai ||
The Perfect True Guru saves him, making him His own.
ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਜਲਤਾ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
eih jag jalataa nadharee aaiaa gur kai sabadh subhai ||
This world is burning; through the Sublime Word of the Guru's Shabad, this comes to be seen.
ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਸੀਤਲ ਭਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥੧॥
sabadh rate se seetal bhe naanak sach kamai ||1||
Those who are attuned to the Shabad are cooled and soothed; O Nanak, they practice Truth. ||1||

Third Mehla:
ਸਫਲਿਓ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
safalio satigur seviaa dha(n)n janam paravaan ||
Service to the True Guru is fruitful and rewarding; blessed and acceptable is such a life.
ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜੀਵਦਿਆ ਮੁਇਆ ਨ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਸੇਈ ਪੁਰਖ ਸੁਜਾਣ ॥
jinaa satigur jeevadhiaa muiaa na visarai seiee purakh sujaan ||
Those who do not forget the True Guru, in life and in death, are truly wise people.
ਕੁਲੁ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
kul udhaare aapanaa so jan hovai paravaan ||
Their families are saved, and they are approved by the Lord.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੁਏ ਜੀਵਦੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਹਹਿ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਾਹਿ ॥
gurmukh mue jeevadhe paravaan heh manmukh janam maraeh ||
The Gurmukhs are approved in death as in life, while the self-willed manmukhs continue the cycle of birth and death.
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੁਏ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਜਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
naanak mue na aakhe'eeh j gur kai sabadh samaeh ||2||
O Nanak, they are not described as dead, who are absorbed in the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||2||

Pauree:
ਹਰਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥
har purakh nira(n)jan sev har naam dhiaaieeaai ||
Serve the Immaculate Lord God, and meditate on the Lord's Name.
ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਲਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥
satasa(n)gat saadhoo lag har naam samaieeaai ||
Join the Society of the Holy Saints, and be absorbed in the Lord's Name.
ਹਰਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡੀ ਕਾਰ ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਲਾਈਐ ॥
har teree vaddee kaar mai moorakh laieeaai ||
O Lord, glorious and great is service to You; I am so foolish
ਹਉ ਗੋਲਾ ਲਾਲਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਮੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਫੁਰਮਾਈਐ ॥
hau golaa laalaa tudh mai hukam furamaieeaai ||
- please, commit me to it. I am Your servant and slave; command me, according to Your Will.
ਹਉ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਾ ਜਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ॥੨॥
hau gurmukh kaar kamaavaa j gur samajhaieeaai ||2||
As Gurmukh, I shall serve You, as Guru has instructed me. ||2||

ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਜਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਲਿਖਿਆਸੁ ॥
poorab likhiaa kamaavanaa j karatai aap likhiaas ||
He acts according to pre-ordained destiny, written by the Creator Himself.
ਮੋਹ ਠਗਉਲੀ ਪਾਈਅਨੁ ਵਿਸਰਿਆ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥
moh Thagaulee paieean visariaa gunataas ||
Emotional attachment has drugged him, and he has forgotten the Lord, the treasure of virtue.
ਮਤੁ ਜਾਣਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਜੀਵਦਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਮੁਇਆਸੁ ॥
mat jaanahu jag jeevadhaa dhoojai bhai muiaas ||
Don't think that he is alive in the world - he is dead, through the love of duality.
ਜਿਨੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਸੇ ਬਹਣਿ ਨ ਮਿਲਨੀ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
jinee gurmukh naam na chetio se bahan na milanee paas ||
Those who do not meditate on the Lord, as Gurmukh, are not permitted to sit near the Lord.
ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਬਹੁ ਅਤਿ ਘਣਾ ਪੁਤੁ ਕਲਤੁ ਨ ਸਾਥਿ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਸਿ ॥
dhukh laagaa bahu at ghanaa put kalat na saath koiee jaas ||
They suffer the most horrible pain and suffering, and neither their sons nor their wives go along with them.
ਲੋਕਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਮੁਹੁ ਕਾਲਾ ਹੋਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਉਭੇ ਸਾਸ ॥
lokaa vich muh kaalaa hoaa a(n)dhar ubhe saas ||
Their faces are blackened among men, and they sigh in deep regret.
ਮਨਮੁਖਾ ਨੋ ਕੋ ਨ ਵਿਸਹੀ ਚੁਕਿ ਗਇਆ ਵੇਸਾਸੁ ॥
manmukhaa no ko na visahee chuk giaa vesaas ||
No one places any reliance in the self-willed manmukhs; trust in them is lost.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾ ਨੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਅਗਲਾ ਜਿਨਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੧॥
naanak gurmukhaa no sukh agalaa jinaa a(n)tar naam nivaas ||1||
O Nanak, the Gurmukhs live in absolute peace; the Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides within them. ||1||

Third Mehla:
ਸੇ ਸੈਣ ਸੇ ਸਜਣਾ ਜਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
se sain se sajanaa j gurmukh mileh subhai ||
They alone are relatives, and they alone are friends, who, as Gurmukh, join together in love.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੇ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
satigur kaa bhaanaa anadhin kareh se sach rahe samai ||
Night and day, they act according to the True Guru's Will; they remain absorbed in the True Name.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਲਗੇ ਸਜਣ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਜਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਵੇਕਾਰ ॥
dhoojai bhai lage sajan na aakhe'eeh j abhimaan kareh vekaar ||
Those who are attached to the love of duality are not called friends; they practice egotism and corruption.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਆਪ ਸੁਆਰਥੀ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਨ ਸਕਹਿ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥
manmukh aap suaarathee kaaraj na sakeh savaar ||
The self-willed manmukhs are selfish; they cannot resolve anyone's affairs.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮੇਟਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
naanak poorab likhiaa kamaavanaa koi na meTanahaar ||2||
O Nanak, they act according to their pre-ordained destiny; no one can erase it. ||2||

Pauree:
ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਆਪਿ ਖੇਲੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥
tudh aape jagat upai kai aap khel rachaiaa ||
You Yourself created the world, and You Yourself arranged the play of it.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਆਪਿ ਸਿਰਜਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ॥
trai gun aap sirajiaa maiaa moh vadhaiaa ||
You Yourself created the three qualities, and fostered emotional attachment to Maya.
ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗੀਐ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇਆ ॥
vich haumai lekhaa ma(n)geeaai fir aavai jaiaa ||
He is called to account for his deeds done in egotism; he continues coming and going in reincarnation.
ਜਿਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੇ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ॥
jinaa har aap kirapaa kare se gur samajhaiaa ||
The Guru instructs those whom the Lord Himself blesses with Grace.
ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਘੁਮਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
balihaaree gur aapane sadhaa sadhaa ghumaiaa ||3||
I am a sacrifice to my Guru; forever and ever, I am a sacrifice to Him. ||3||

Shalok, Third Mehla:
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਵਿਣੁ ਦੰਤਾ ਜਗੁ ਖਾਇਆ ॥
maiaa mamataa mohanee jin vin dha(n)taa jag khaiaa ||
The love of Maya is enticing; without teeth, it has eaten up the world.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਖਾਧੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
manmukh khaadhe gurmukh ubare jinee sach naam chit laiaa ||
The self-willed manmukhs are eaten away, while the Gurmukhs are saved; they focus their consciousness on the True Name.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਜਗੁ ਕਮਲਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਇਆ ॥
bin naavai jag kamalaa firai gurmukh nadharee aaiaa ||
Without the Name, the world wanders around insane; the Gurmukhs come to see this.
