ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Soohee, Fifth Mehla:
ਰਹਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਦੇਵਾ ॥
rahan na paaveh sur nar dhevaa ||
The angelic beings and demi-gods are not permitted to remain here.
ਊਠਿ ਸਿਧਾਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ ਸੇਵਾ ॥੧॥
uooTh sidhaare kar mun jan sevaa ||1||
The silent sages and humble servants also must arise and depart. ||1||
ਜੀਵਤ ਪੇਖੇ ਜਿਨੑੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
jeevat pekhe jin(h)ee har har dhiaaiaa ||
Only those who meditate on the Lord, Har, Har, are seen to live on.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਤਿਨੑੀ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saadhasa(n)g tin(h)ee dharasan paiaa ||1|| rahaau ||
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, they obtain the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan. ||1||Pause||
ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹ ਸਾਹ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਮਰਨਾ ॥
baadhisaeh saeh vaapaaree maranaa ||
Kings, emperors and merchants must die.
ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਕਾਲਹਿ ਖਰਨਾ ॥੨॥
jo dheesai so kaaleh kharanaa ||2||
Whoever is seen shall be consumed by death. ||2||
ਕੂੜੈ ਮੋਹਿ ਲਪਟਿ ਲਪਟਾਨਾ ॥
kooRai moh lapaT lapaTaanaa ||
Mortal beings are entangled, clinging to false worldly attachments.
ਛੋਡਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਤਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਾ ॥੩॥
chhodd chaliaa taa fir pachhutaanaa ||3||
And when they must leave them behind, then they regret and grieve. ||3||
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਕਰਹੁ ਦਾਤਿ ॥
kirapaa nidhaan naanak kau karahu dhaat ||
O Lord, O treasure of mercy, please bless Nanak with this gift,
ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਜਪੀ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ॥੪॥੮॥੧੪॥
naam teraa japee dhin raat ||4||8||14||
that he may chant Your Name, day and night. ||4||8||14||

Soohee, Fifth Mehla:
ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤੁਮਹਿ ਬਸਾਰੇ ॥
ghaT ghaT a(n)tar tumeh basaare ||
You dwell deep within the heart of each and every being.
ਸਗਲ ਸਮਗ੍ਰੀ ਸੂਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
sagal samagree soot tumaare ||1||
The entire universe is strung on Your Thread. ||1||
ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰੇ ॥
too(n) preetam too(n) praan adhaare ||
You are my Beloved, the Support of my breath of life.
ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਪੇਖਿ ਪੇਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਬਿਗਸਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tum hee pekh pekh man bigasaare ||1|| rahaau ||
Beholding You, gazing upon You, my mind blossoms forth. ||1||Pause||
ਅਨਿਕ ਜੋਨਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਹਾਰੇ ॥
anik jon bhram bhram bhram haare ||
Wandering, wandering, wandering through countless incarnations, I have grown so weary.
ਓਟ ਗਹੀ ਅਬ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
oT gahee ab saadh sa(n)gaare ||2||
Now, I hold tight to the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||2||
ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੇ ॥
agam agochar alakh apaare ||
You are inaccessible, incomprehensible, invisible and infinite.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਿਮਰੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਾਰੇ ॥੩॥੯॥੧੫॥
naanak simarai dhin rainaare ||3||9||15||
Nanak remembers You in meditation, day and night. ||3||9||15||

ਕਵਨ ਕਾਜ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
kavan kaaj maiaa vaddiaaiee ||
What is the use of the glory of Maya?
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਬਿਨਸਤ ਬਾਰ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥੧॥
jaa kau binasat baar na kaiee ||1||
It disappears in no time at all. ||1||
ਇਹੁ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਸੋਵਤ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
eih supanaa sovat nahee jaanai ||
This is a dream, but the sleeper does not know it.
ਅਚੇਤ ਬਿਵਸਥਾ ਮਹਿ ਲਪਟਾਨੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
achet bivasathaa meh lapaTaanai ||1|| rahaau ||
In his unconscious state, he clings to it. ||1||Pause||
ਮਹਾ ਮੋਹਿ ਮੋਹਿਓ ਗਾਵਾਰਾ ॥
mahaa moh mohio gaavaaraa ||
The poor fool is enticed by the great attachments of the world.
ਪੇਖਤ ਪੇਖਤ ਊਠਿ ਸਿਧਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
pekhat pekhat uooTh sidhaaraa ||2||
Gazing upon them, watching them, he must still arise and depart. ||2||
ਊਚ ਤੇ ਊਚ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਦਰਬਾਰਾ ॥
uooch te uooch taa kaa dharabaaraa ||
The Royal Court of His Darbaar is the highest of the high.
ਕਈ ਜੰਤ ਬਿਨਾਹਿ ਉਪਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
kiee ja(n)t binaeh upaaraa ||3||
He creates and destroys countless beings. ||3||
ਦੂਸਰ ਹੋਆ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਹੋਈ ॥
dhoosar hoaa naa ko hoiee ||
There has never been any other, and there shall never be.
ਜਪਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ॥੪॥੧੦॥੧੬॥
jap naanak prabh eko soiee ||4||10||16||
O Nanak, meditate on the One God. ||4||10||16||

ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਹਉ ਜੀਵਾ ॥
simar simar taa kau hau jeevaa ||
Meditating, meditating in remembrance on Him, I live.
ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਤੇਰੇ ਧੋਇ ਧੋਇ ਪੀਵਾ ॥੧॥
charan kamal tere dhoi dhoi peevaa ||1||
I wash Your Lotus Feet, and drink in the wash water. ||1||
ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥
so har meraa a(n)tarajaamee ||
He is my Lord, the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts.
ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bhagat janaa kai sa(n)g suaamee ||1|| rahaau ||
My Lord and Master abides with His humble devotees. ||1||Pause||
ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਾ ॥
sun sun a(n)mirat naam dhiaavaa ||
Hearing, hearing Your Ambrosial Naam, I meditate on it.
ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ॥੨॥
aaTh pahar tere gun gaavaa ||2||
Twenty-four hours a day, I sing Your Glorious Praises. ||2||
ਪੇਖਿ ਪੇਖਿ ਲੀਲਾ ਮਨਿ ਆਨੰਦਾ ॥
pekh pekh leelaa man aana(n)dhaa ||
Beholding, beholding Your divine play, my mind is in bliss.
ਗੁਣ ਅਪਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦਾ ॥੩॥
gun apaar prabh paramaana(n)dhaa ||3||
Your Glorious Virtues are infinite, O God, O Lord of supreme bliss. ||3||
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਕਛੁ ਭਉ ਨ ਬਿਆਪੈ ॥
jaa kai simaran kachh bhau na biaapai ||
Meditating in remembrance on Him, fear cannot touch me.
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪੈ ॥੪॥੧੧॥੧੭॥
sadhaa sadhaa naanak har jaapai ||4||11||17||
Forever and ever, Nanak meditates on the Lord. ||4||11||17||

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
gur kai bachan ridhai dhiaan dhaaree ||
Within my heart, I meditate on the Word of the Guru's Teachings.
ਰਸਨਾ ਜਾਪੁ ਜਪਉ ਬਨਵਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
rasanaa jaap japau banavaaree ||1||
With my tongue, I chant the Chant of the Lord. ||1||
ਸਫਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਦਰਸਨ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ॥
safal moorat dharasan balihaaree ||
The image of His vision is fruitful; I am a sacrifice to it.
ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਅਧਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
charan kamal man praan adhaaree ||1|| rahaau ||
His Lotus Feet are the Support of the mind, the Support of the very breath of life. ||1||Pause||
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ॥
saadhasa(n)g janam maran nivaaree ||
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the cycle of birth and death is ended.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਿ ਕਰਨ ਅਧਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
a(n)mirat kathaa sun karan adhaaree ||2||
To hear the Ambrosial Sermon is the support of my ears. ||2||
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਤਜਾਰੀ ॥
kaam karodh lobh moh tajaaree ||
I have renounced sexual desire, anger, greed and emotional attachment.
ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਨਾਮ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਸੁਚਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
dhiraR naam dhaan isanaan suchaaree ||3||
I have enshrined the Naam within myself, with charity, true cleansing and righteous conduct. ||3||
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
kahu naanak ih tat beechaaree ||
Says Nanak, I have contemplated this essence of reality;
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੀ ॥੪॥੧੨॥੧੮॥
raam naam jap paar utaaree ||4||12||18||
chanting the Name of the Lord, I am carried across. ||4||12||18||

The sinner is absorbed in greed and emotional attachment.
