ਵਖਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਬੰਦਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
vakhat veechaare su ba(n)dhaa hoi ||
One who reflects upon his allotted span of life, becomes the slave of God.
ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਹੈ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇ ॥
kudharat hai keemat nahee pai ||
The value of the Creative Power of the Universe cannot be known.
ਜਾ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇ ਤ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
jaa keemat pai ta kahee na jai ||
Even if its value were known, it could not be described.
ਸਰੈ ਸਰੀਅਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
sarai sareeat kareh beechaar ||
Some think about religious rituals and regulations,
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਕੈਸੇ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਪਾਰੁ ॥
bin boojhe kaise paaveh paar ||
but without understanding, how can they cross over to the other side?
ਸਿਦਕੁ ਕਰਿ ਸਿਜਦਾ ਮਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਖਸੂਦੁ ॥
sidhak kar sijadhaa man kar makhasoodh ||
Let sincere faith be your bowing in prayer, and let the conquest of your mind be your objective in life.
ਜਿਹ ਧਿਰਿ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਿਹ ਧਿਰਿ ਮਉਜੂਦੁ ॥੧॥
jeh dhir dhekhaa teh dhir maujoodh ||1||
Wherever I look, there I see God's Presence. ||1||

Third Mehla:
ਗੁਰ ਸਭਾ ਏਵ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾ ਨੇੜੈ ਨਾ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
gur sabhaa ev na paieeaai naa neRai naa dhoor ||
The Society of the Guru is not obtained like this, by trying to be near or far away.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤਾਂ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਾ ਮਨੁ ਰਹੈ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥੨॥
naanak satigur taa(n) milai jaa man rahai hadhoor ||2||
O Nanak, you shall meet the True Guru, if your mind remains in His Presence. ||2||

ਸਪਤ ਦੀਪ ਸਪਤ ਸਾਗਰਾ ਨਵ ਖੰਡ ਚਾਰਿ ਵੇਦ ਦਸ ਅਸਟ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ॥
sapat dheep sapat saagaraa nav kha(n)dd chaar vedh dhas asaT puraanaa ||
The seven islands, seven seas, nine continents, four Vedas and eighteen Puraanas
ਹਰਿ ਸਭਨਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਤੂੰ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਸਭਨਾ ਭਾਣਾ ॥
har sabhanaa vich too(n) varatadhaa har sabhanaa bhaanaa ||
O Lord, You pervade and permeate all. Lord, everyone loves You.
ਸਭਿ ਤੁਝੈ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਰਗ ਪਾਣਾ ॥
sabh tujhai dhiaaveh jeea ja(n)t har saarag paanaa ||
All beings and creatures meditate on You, Lord. You hold the earth in Your Hands.
ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਰਾਧਦੇ ਤਿਨ ਹਉ ਕੁਰਬਾਣਾ ॥
jo gurmukh har aaraadhadhe tin hau kurabaanaa ||
I am a sacrifice to those Gurmukhs who worship and adore the Lord.
ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਚੋਜ ਵਿਡਾਣਾ ॥੪॥
too(n) aape aap varatadhaa kar choj viddaanaa ||4||
You Yourself are All-pervading; You stage this wondrous drama! ||4||

Shalok, Third Mehla:
ਕਲਉ ਮਸਾਜਨੀ ਕਿਆ ਸਦਾਈਐ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹੀ ਲਿਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ॥
kalau masaajanee kiaa sadhaieeaai hiradhai hee likh leh ||
Why ask for a pen, and why ask for ink? Write within your heart.
ਸਦਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਹੈ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਤੂਟਸਿ ਨੇਹੁ ॥
sadhaa saahib kai ra(n)g rahai kabahoo(n) na tooTas neh ||
Remain immersed forever in the Love of your Lord and Master, and your love for Him shall never break.
ਕਲਉ ਮਸਾਜਨੀ ਜਾਇਸੀ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਭੀ ਨਾਲੇ ਜਾਇ ॥
kalau masaajanee jaisee likhiaa bhee naale jai ||
Pen and ink shall pass away, along with what has been written.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਇਸੀ ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਛੋਡੀ ਸਚੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥
naanak seh preet na jaisee jo dhur chhoddee sachai pai ||1||
O Nanak, the Love of your Husband Lord shall never perish. The True Lord has bestowed it, as it was pre-ordained. ||1||

ਨਦਰੀ ਆਵਦਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਚਲਈ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਕੋ ਵਿਉਪਾਇ ॥
nadharee aavadhaa naal na chaliee vekhahu ko viaupai ||
That which is seen, shall not go along with you. What does it take to make you see this?
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸਚੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ਸਚਿ ਰਹਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
satigur sach dhiraRaiaa sach rahahu liv lai ||
The True Guru has implanted the True Name within; remain lovingly absorbed in the True One.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਕਰਮੀ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥
naanak sabadhee sach hai karamee palai pai ||2||
O Nanak, the Word of His Shabad is True. By His Grace, it is obtained. ||2||

ਹਰਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਇਕੁ ਤੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਭੇਤੁ ॥
har a(n)dhar baahar ik too(n) too(n) jaaneh bhet ||
O Lord, You are inside and outside as well. You are the Knower of secrets.
ਜੋ ਕੀਚੈ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਚੇਤੁ ॥
jo keechai so har jaanadhaa mere man har chet ||
Whatever anyone does, the Lord knows. O my mind, think of the Lord.
ਸੋ ਡਰੈ ਜਿ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਵਦਾ ਧਰਮੀ ਵਿਗਸੇਤੁ ॥
so ddarai j paap kamaavadhaa dharamee vigaset ||
The one who commits sins lives in fear, while the one who lives righteously rejoices.
ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਆਉ ਸਚੁ ਤਾ ਡਰੀਐ ਕੇਤੁ ॥
too(n) sachaa aap niaau sach taa ddareeaai ket ||
O Lord, You Yourself are True, and True is Your Justice. Why should anyone be afraid?
ਜਿਨਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਸੇ ਸਚਿ ਰਲੇਤੁ ॥੫॥
jinaa naanak sach pachhaaniaa se sach ralet ||5||
O Nanak, those who recognize the True Lord are blended with the True One. ||5||
ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੩ ॥

Shalok, Third Mehla:
ਕਲਮ ਜਲਉ ਸਣੁ ਮਸਵਾਣੀਐ ਕਾਗਦੁ ਭੀ ਜਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
kalam jalau san masavaaneeaai kaagadh bhee jal jaau ||
Burn the pen, and burn the ink; burn the paper as well.
ਲਿਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਲਿ ਬਲਉ ਜਿਨਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ॥
likhan vaalaa jal balau jin likhiaa dhoojaa bhaau ||
Burn the writer who writes in the love of duality.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
naanak poorab likhiaa kamaavanaa avar na karanaa jai ||1||
O Nanak, people do what is pre-ordained; they cannot do anything else. ||1||

ਹੋਰੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਪੜਣਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
hor kooR paRanaa kooR bolanaa maiaa naal piaar ||
False is other reading, and false is other speaking, in the love of Maya.
ਨਾਨਕ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥੨॥
naanak vin naavai ko thir nahee paR paR hoi khuaar ||2||
O Nanak, without the Name, nothing is permanent; those who read and read are ruined. ||2||

ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡੀ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ॥
har kee vaddiaaiee vaddee hai har keeratan har kaa ||
Great is the Greatness of the Lord, and the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡੀ ਹੈ ਜਾ ਨਿਆਉ ਹੈ ਧਰਮ ਕਾ ॥
har kee vaddiaaiee vaddee hai jaa niaau hai dharam kaa ||
Great is the Greatness of the Lord; His Justice is totally Righteous.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡੀ ਹੈ ਜਾ ਫਲੁ ਹੈ ਜੀਅ ਕਾ ॥
har kee vaddiaaiee vaddee hai jaa fal hai jeea kaa ||
Great is the Greatness of the Lord; people receive the fruits of the soul.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡੀ ਹੈ ਜਾ ਨ ਸੁਣਈ ਕਹਿਆ ਚੁਗਲ ਕਾ ॥
har kee vaddiaaiee vaddee hai jaa na suniee kahiaa chugal kaa ||
Great is the Greatness of the Lord; He does not hear the words of the back-biters.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡੀ ਹੈ ਅਪੁਛਿਆ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇਵਕਾ ॥੬॥
har kee vaddiaaiee vaddee hai apuchhiaa dhaan dhevakaa ||6||
Great is the Greatness of the Lord; He gives His Gifts without being asked. ||6||
ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੩ ॥

Shalok, Third Mehla:
ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤੀ ਸਭ ਮੁਈ ਸੰਪਉ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
hau hau karatee sabh muiee sa(n)pau kisai na naal ||
Those who act in ego shall all die. Their worldly possessions shall not go along with them.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਭ ਜੋਹੀ ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ॥
dhoojai bhai dhukh paiaa sabh johee jamakaal ||
Because of their love of duality, they suffer in pain. The Messenger of Death is watching all.
