ਤਿਸੁ ਪਾਖੰਡੀ ਜਰਾ ਨ ਮਰਣਾ ॥

tis paakha(n)ddee jaraa na maranaa ||

Such a Paakhandi does not grow old or die.

ਬੋਲੈ ਚਰਪਟੁ ਸਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥

bolai charapaT sat saroop ||

Says Charpat, God is the embodiment of Truth;

ਪਰਮ ਤੰਤ ਮਹਿ ਰੇਖ ਨ ਰੂਪੁ ॥੫॥

param ta(n)t meh rekh na roop ||5||

the supreme essence of reality has no shape or form. ||5||

ਮਃ ੧ ॥

mahalaa pehilaa ||

First Mehla:

ਸੋ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਜਿ ਉਲਟੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ॥

so bairaagee j ulaTe braham ||

He alone is a Bairaagi, who turns himself toward God.

ਗਗਨ ਮੰਡਲ ਮਹਿ ਰੋਪੈ ਥੰਮੁ ॥

gagan ma(n)ddal meh ropai tha(n)m ||

In the Tenth Gate, the sky of the mind, he erects his pillar.

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਹੈ ਧਿਆਨਿ ॥

ahinis a(n)tar rahai dhiaan ||

Night and day, he remains in deep inner meditation.

ਤੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਸਤ ਸਮਾਨਿ ॥

te bairaagee sat samaan ||

Such a Bairaagi is just like the True Lord.

ਬੋਲੈ ਭਰਥਰਿ ਸਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥

bolai bharathar sat saroop ||

Says Bhart'har, God is the embodiment of Truth;

First Mehla:

ਕਿਉ ਮਰੈ ਮੰਦਾ ਕਿਉ ਜੀਵੈ ਜੁਗਤਿ ॥

kiau marai ma(n)dhaa kiau jeevai jugat ||

How is evil eradicated? How can the true way of life be found?

ਕੰਨ ਪੜਾਇ ਕਿਆ ਖਾਜੈ ਭੁਗਤਿ ॥

ka(n)n paRai kiaa khaajai bhugat ||

What is the use of piercing the ears, or begging for food?

ਆਸਤਿ ਨਾਸਤਿ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਉ ॥

aasat naasat eko naau ||

Throughout existence and non-existence, there is only the Name of the One Lord.

ਕਉਣੁ ਸੁ ਅਖਰੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਰਹੈ ਹਿਆਉ ॥

kaunu su akhar jit rahai hiaau ||

What is that Word, which holds the heart in its place?

ਧੂਪ ਛਾਵ ਜੇ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਸਹੈ ॥

dhoop chhaav je sam kar sahai ||

When you look alike upon sunshine and shade,

ਤਾ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ॥

taa naanak aakhai gur ko kahai ||

says Nanak, then the Guru will speak to you.

ਛਿਅ ਵਰਤਾਰੇ ਵਰਤਹਿ ਪੂਤ ॥

chhia varataare varateh poot ||

The students follow the six systems.

ਨਾ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਨਾ ਅਉਧੂਤ ॥

naa sa(n)saaree naa aaudhoot ||

They are neither worldly people, nor detached renunciates.

ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਿ ਜੋ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

nira(n)kaar jo rahai samai ||

One who remains absorbed in the Formless Lord

ਕਾਹੇ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਮੰਗਣਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੭॥

kaahe bheekhiaa ma(n)gan jai ||7||

- why should he go out begging? ||7||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

pauRee ||

Pauree:

ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਸੋਈ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਥਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਤਾ ॥

har ma(n)dhar soiee aakheeaai jithahu har jaataa ||

That alone is said to be the Lord's temple, where the Lord is known.

ਮਾਨਸ ਦੇਹ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਭੁ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥

maanas dheh gur bachanee paiaa sabh aatam raam pachhaataa ||

In the human body, the Guru's Word is found, when one understands that the Lord, the Supreme Soul, is in all.

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਖੋਜੀਐ ਘਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥

baahar mool na khojeeaai ghar maeh bidhaataa ||

Don't look for Him outside your self. The Creator, the Architect of Destiny, is within the home of your own heart.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਤਿਨੀ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਤਾ ॥

manmukh har ma(n)dhar kee saar na jaananee tinee janam gavaataa ||

The self-willed manmukh does not appreciate the value of the Lord's temple; they waste away and lose their lives.

ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਇਕੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਈ ॥੧੨॥

sabh meh ik varatadhaa gur sabadhee paiaa jaiee ||12||

The One Lord is pervading in all; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, He can be found. ||12||

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੩ ॥

salok mahalaa teejaa ||

Shalok, Third Mehla:

ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋ ਸੁਣੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਕਾ ਕਹਣਾ ॥

moorakh hovai so sunai moorakh kaa kahanaa ||

Only a fool listens to the words of the fool.

ਮੂਰਖ ਕੇ ਕਿਆ ਲਖਣ ਹੈ ਕਿਆ ਮੂਰਖ ਕਾ ਕਰਣਾ ॥

moorakh ke kiaa lakhan hai kiaa moorakh kaa karanaa ||

What are the signs of the fool? What does the fool do?

ਮੂਰਖੁ ਓਹੁ ਜਿ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਹੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੇ ਮਰਣਾ ॥

moorakh oh j mugadh hai aha(n)kaare maranaa ||

A fool is stupid; he dies of egotism.

ਏਤੁ ਕਮਾਣੈ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੁਖ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਣਾ ॥

et kamaanai sadhaa dhukh dhukh hee meh rahanaa ||

His actions always bring him pain; he lives in pain.

ਅਤਿ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪਵੈ ਖੂਹਿ ਕਿਹੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਕਰਣਾ ॥

at piaaraa pavai khooh kih sa(n)jam karanaa ||

If someone's beloved friend falls into the pit, what can be used to pull him out?

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ਓਸੁ ਅਲਿਪਤੋ ਰਹਣਾ ॥

gurmukh hoi su kare veechaar os alipato rahanaa ||

One who becomes Gurmukh contemplates the Lord, and remains detached.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਆਪਿ ਉਧਰੈ ਓਸੁ ਪਿਛੈ ਡੁਬਦੇ ਭੀ ਤਰਣਾ ॥

har naam japai aap udharai os pichhai ddubadhe bhee taranaa ||

Chanting the Lord's Name, he saves himself, and he carries across those who are drowning as well.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਜੋ ਦੇਇ ਸੁ ਸਹਣਾ ॥੧॥

naanak jo tis bhaavai so kare jo dhei su sahanaa ||1||

O Nanak, he acts in accordance with the Will of God; he endures whatever he is given. ||1||

ਮਃ ੧ ॥

mahalaa pehilaa ||

First Mehla:

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖੈ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਸਿਖ ਸਹੀ ॥

naanak aakhai re manaa suneeaai sikh sahee ||

Says Nanak, listen, O mind, to the True Teachings.

ਲੇਖਾ ਰਬੁ ਮੰਗੇਸੀਆ ਬੈਠਾ ਕਢਿ ਵਹੀ ॥

lekhaa rab ma(n)geseeaa baiThaa kadd vahee ||

Opening His ledger, God will call you to account.

ਤਲਬਾ ਪਉਸਨਿ ਆਕੀਆ ਬਾਕੀ ਜਿਨਾ ਰਹੀ ॥

talabaa pausan aakeeaa baakee jinaa rahee ||

Those rebels who have unpaid accounts shall be called out.

ਅਜਰਾਈਲੁ ਫਰੇਸਤਾ ਹੋਸੀ ਆਇ ਤਈ ॥

ajaraieel faresataa hosee aai tiee ||

Azraa-eel, the Angel of Death, shall be appointed to punish them.

ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਨ ਸੁਝਈ ਭੀੜੀ ਗਲੀ ਫਹੀ ॥

aavan jaan na sujhiee bheeRee galee fahee ||

They will find no way to escape coming and going in reincarnation; they are trapped in the narrow path.

ਕੂੜ ਨਿਖੁਟੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਓੜਕਿ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੀ ॥੨॥

kooR nikhuTe naanakaa oRak sach rahee ||2||

Falsehood will come to an end, O Nanak, and Truth will prevail in the end. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

pauRee ||

Pauree:

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਸਭੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਆਪੈ ॥

har kaa sabh sareer hai har rav rahiaa sabh aapai ||

The body and everything belongs to the Lord; the Lord Himself is all-pervading.

ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨ ਪਵੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ॥

har kee keemat na pavai kichh kahan na jaapai ||

The Lord's value cannot be estimated; nothing can be said about it.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਰਾਪੈ ॥

gur parasaadhee saalaaheeaai har bhagatee raapai ||

By Guru's Grace, one praises the Lord, imbued with feelings of devotion.

ਸਭੁ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਹਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਗਵਾਪੈ ॥

sabh man tan hariaa hoiaa aha(n)kaar gavaapai ||

The mind and body are totally rejuvenated, and egotism is eradicated.

ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਖੇਲੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੧੩॥

sabh kichh har kaa khel hai gurmukh kisai bujhaiee ||13||

Everything is the play of the Lord. The Gurmukh understands this. ||13||

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

salok mahalaa pehilaa ||

Shalok, First Mehla:

ਸਹੰਸਰ ਦਾਨ ਦੇ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੁ ਰੋਆਇਆ ॥

saha(n)sar dhaan dhe i(n)dhr roaaiaa ||

Branded with a thousand marks of disgrace, Indra cried in shame.

ਪਰਸ ਰਾਮੁ ਰੋਵੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥

paras raam rovai ghar aaiaa ||

Paras Raam returned home crying.

ਅਜੈ ਸੁ ਰੋਵੈ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਖਾਇ ॥

ajai su rovai bheekhiaa khai ||

Ajai cried and wept, when he was made to eat the manure he had given, pretending it was charity.

ਐਸੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥

aaisee dharageh milai sajai ||

Such is the punishment received in the Court of the Lord.

ਰੋਵੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਨਿਕਾਲਾ ਭਇਆ ॥

rovai raam nikaalaa bhiaa ||

Rama wept when he was sent into exile,
