ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੫ ॥

salok mahalaa panjavaa ||

Shalok, Fifth Mehla:

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ਅਮਿਉ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ॥

a(n)mirat baanee amiau ras a(n)mrit har kaa naau ||

The Bani of the Guru's Word is Ambrosial Nectar; its taste is sweet. The Name of the Lord is Ambrosial Nectar.

ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥

man tan hiradhai simar har aaTh pahar gun gaau ||

Meditate in remembrance on the Lord in your mind, body and heart; twenty-four hours a day, sing His Glorious Praises.

ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਗੁਰਸਿਖਹੁ ਸਚਾ ਇਹੈ ਸੁਆਉ ॥

aupadhes sunahu tum gursikhahu sachaa ihai suaau ||

Listen to these Teachings, O Sikhs of the Guru. This is the true purpose of life.

ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਸਫਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਲਾਇਹੁ ਭਾਉ ॥

janam padhaarath safal hoi man meh laih bhaau ||

This priceless human life will be made fruitful; embrace love for the Lord in your mind.

ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜ ਆਨਦੁ ਘਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਪਤਿਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥

sookh sahaj aanadh ghanaa prabh japatiaa dhukh jai ||

Celestial peace and absolute bliss come when one meditates on God - suffering is dispelled.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਸੁਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਈਐ ਥਾਉ ॥੧॥

naanak naam japat sukh uoopajai dharageh paieeaai thaau ||1||

O Nanak, chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, peace wells up, and one obtains a place in the Court of the Lord. ||1||

ਮਃ ੫ ॥

Fifth Mehla:

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਇ ॥

naanak naam dhiaaieeaai gur pooraa mat dhei ||

O Nanak, meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord; this is the Teaching imparted by the Perfect Guru.

ਭਾਣੈ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮੋ ਭਾਣੈ ਹੀ ਕਢਿ ਲੇਇ ॥

bhaanai jap tap sa(n)jamo bhaanai hee kadd lei ||

In the Lord's Will, they practice meditation, austerity and self-discipline; in the Lord's Will, they are released.

ਭਾਣੈ ਜੋਨਿ ਭਵਾਈਐ ਭਾਣੈ ਬਖਸ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

bhaanai jon bhavaieeaai bhaanai bakhas karei ||

In the Lord's Will, they are made to wander in reincarnation; in the Lord's Will, they are forgiven.

ਭਾਣੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਭੋਗੀਐ ਭਾਣੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

bhaanai dhukh sukh bhogeeaai bhaanai karam karei ||

In the Lord's Will, pain and pleasure are experienced; in the Lord's Will, actions are performed.

ਭਾਣੈ ਮਿਟੀ ਸਾਜਿ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਜੋਤਿ ਧਰੇਇ ॥

bhaanai miTee saaj kai bhaanai jot dharei ||

In the Lord's Will, clay is fashioned into form; in the Lord's Will, His Light is infused into it.

ਭਾਣੈ ਭੋਗ ਭੋਗਾਇਦਾ ਭਾਣੈ ਮਨਹਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

bhaanai bhog bhogaidhaa bhaanai maneh karei ||

In the Lord's Will, enjoyments are enjoyed; in the Lord's Will, these enjoyments are denied.

ਭਾਣੈ ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਅਉਤਾਰੇ ਭਾਣੈ ਧਰਣਿ ਪਰੇਇ ॥

bhaanai narak surag aautaare bhaanai dharan parei ||

In the Lord's Will, they are incarnated in heaven and hell; in the Lord's Will, they fall to the ground.

ਭਾਣੈ ਹੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਲਾਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਹੇ ॥੨॥

bhaanai hee jis bhagatee laae naanak virale he ||2||

In the Lord's Will, they are committed to His devotional worship and Praise; O Nanak, how rare are these! ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਵਡਿਆਈ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਹਉ ਜੀਵਾ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣੇ ॥

vaddiaaiee sache naam kee hau jeevaa sun sune ||

Hearing, hearing of the glorious greatness of the True Name, I live.

ਪਸੂ ਪਰੇਤ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਇਕ ਖਣੇ ॥

pasoo paret agiaan udhaare ik khane ||

Even ignorant beasts and goblins can be saved, in an instant.

ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰੈਣਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ਸਦਾ ਸਦ ਜਾਪੀਐ ॥

dhinas rain teraa naau sadhaa sadh jaapeeaai ||

Day and night, chant the Name, forever and ever.

ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਵਿਕਰਾਲ ਨਾਇ ਤੇਰੈ ਧ੍ਰਾਪੀਐ ॥

tirasanaa bhukh vikaraal nai terai dhraapeeaai ||

The most horrible thirst and hunger is satisfied through Your Name, O Lord.

ਰੋਗੁ ਸੋਗੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਵੰਞੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ॥

rog sog dhukh va(n)n(j)ai jis naau man vasai ||

Disease, sorrow and pain run away, when the Name dwells within the mind.

ਤਿਸਹਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਲਾਲੁ ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਰਸੈ ॥

tiseh paraapat laal jo gur sabadhee rasai ||

He alone attains his Beloved, who loves the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਖੰਡ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਉਧਾਰਣਹਾਰਿਆ ॥

kha(n)dd brahama(n)dd bea(n)t udhaaranahaariaa ||

The worlds and solar systems are saved by the Infinite Lord.

ਤੇਰੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਸਚੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ॥੧੨॥

teree sobhaa tudh sache mere piaariaa ||12||

Your glory is Yours alone, O my Beloved True Lord. ||12||

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੫ ॥

Shalok, Fifth Mehla:

ਮਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ ਮੈ ਛਡਿ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਰੰਗਿ ਕਸੁੰਭੈ ਭੁਲੀ ॥

mitr piaaraa naanak jee mai chhadd gavaiaa ra(n)g kasu(n)bhai bhulee ||

I abandoned and lost my Beloved Friend, O Nanak; I was fooled by the transitory color of the safflower, which fades away.

ਤਉ ਸਜਣ ਕੀ ਮੈ ਕੀਮ ਨ ਪਉਦੀ ਹਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਢੁ ਨ ਲਹਦੀ ॥੧॥

tau sajan kee mai keem na paudhee hau tudh bin add na lahadhee ||1||

I did not know Your value, O my Friend; without You, I am not worth even half a shell. ||1||

ਮਃ ੫ ॥

Fifth Mehla:

ਸਸੁ ਵਿਰਾਇਣਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਉ ਸਸੁਰਾ ਵਾਦੀ ਜੇਠੋ ਪਉ ਪਉ ਲੂਹੈ ॥

sas virain naanak jeeau sasuraa vaadhee jeTho pau pau loohai ||

My mother-in-law is my enemy, O Nanak; my father-in-law is argumentative and my brother-in-law burns me at every step.

ਹਭੇ ਭਸੁ ਪੁਣੇਦੇ ਵਤਨੁ ਜਾ ਮੈ ਸਜਣੁ ਤੂਹੈ ॥੨॥

habhe bhas punedhe vatan jaa mai sajan toohai ||2||

They can all just play in the dust, when You are my Friend, O Lord. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

pauRee ||

Pauree:

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਵੁਠਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਣੋ ॥

jis too vuThaa chit tis dharadh nivaarano ||

You relieve the pains of those, within whose consciousness You dwell, O Lord.

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਵੁਠਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਹਾਰਣੋ ॥

jis too vuThaa chit tis kadhe na haarano ||

Those, within whose consciousness You dwell, never lose.

ਜਿਸੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੁ ਸਰਪਰ ਤਾਰਣੋ ॥

jis miliaa pooraa guroo su sarapar taarano ||

One who meets the Perfect Guru will surely be saved.

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਲਾਏ ਸਚਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਮੑਾਲਣੋ ॥

jis no laae sach tis sach sam(h)aalano ||

One who is attached to Truth, contemplates Truth.

ਜਿਸੁ ਆਇਆ ਹਥਿ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਸੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਾਲਣੋ ॥

jis aaiaa hath nidhaanu su rahiaa bhaalano ||

One, into whose hands the treasure comes, stops searching.

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਇਕੋ ਰੰਗੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਸੋ ਜਾਨਣੋ ॥

jis no iko ra(n)g bhagat so jaanano ||

He alone is known as a devotee, who loves the One Lord.

ਓਹੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਕੀ ਰੇਣੁ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਚਾਰਣੋ ॥

oh sabhanaa kee ren birahee chaarano ||

He is the dust under the feet of all; he is the lover of the Lord's feet.

ਸਭਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਚੋਜ ਵਿਡਾਣ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਕਾਰਣੋ ॥੧੩॥

sabh tere choj viddaan sabh teraa kaarano ||13||

Everything is Your wonderful play; the whole creation is Yours. ||13||

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੫ ॥

salok mahalaa panjavaa ||

Shalok, Fifth Mehla:

ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ ਮੈ ਹਭ ਵਞਾਈ ਛੋੜਿਆ ਹਭੁ ਕਿਝੁ ਤਿਆਗੀ ॥

ausatat ni(n)dhaa naanak jee mai habh van(j)aiee chhoRiaa habh kijh tiaagee ||

I have totally discarded praise and slander, O Nanak; I have forsaken and abandoned everything.

ਹਭੇ ਸਾਕ ਕੂੜਾਵੇ ਡਿਠੇ ਤਉ ਪਲੈ ਤੈਡੈ ਲਾਗੀ ॥੧॥

habhe saak kooRaave ddiThe tau palai taiddai laagee ||1||

I have seen that all relationships are false, and so I have grasped hold of the hem of Your robe, Lord. ||1||

Fifth Mehla:

ਫਿਰਦੀ ਫਿਰਦੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਉ ਹਉ ਫਾਵੀ ਥੀਈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦਿਸਾਵਰ ਪੰਧਾ ॥

firadhee firadhee naanak jeeau hau faavee theeiee bahut dhisaavar pa(n)dhaa ||

I wandered and wandered and went crazy, O Nanak, in countless foreign lands and pathways.

ਤਾ ਹਉ ਸੁਖਿ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਸੁਤੀ ਜਾ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਜਣੁ ਮੈ ਲਧਾ ॥੨॥

taa hau sukh sukhaalee sutee jaa gur mil sajan mai ladhaa ||2||

But then, I slept in peace and comfort, when I met the Guru, and found my Friend. ||2||
