Gurdwara Bala Sahib marks the cremation site of Guru Harkrishan, the eighth Sikh Guru who became the youngest Guru at age five and was known as Bala Pir (Child Prophet) by Delhi's Muslim population for his selfless service during a devastating smallpox and cholera epidemic. Summoned to Delhi by Emperor Aurangzeb in 1664, the young Guru contracted smallpox while tending to the sick and passed away on the banks of the Yamuna. The Gurdwara is also sacred as the cremation site of Mata Sundri and Mata Sahib Kaur, two revered figures of Sikh history, and the present building was completed in 1957-58.
