About
Gurdwara Baba Atal Rai is a nine-story tower rising approximately forty meters near the Harmandir Sahib complex, making it one of the tallest Sikh structures in Amritsar. It commemorates Baba Atal Rai, the young son of Guru Hargobind who, according to tradition, miraculously revived his playmate Mohan from a snakebite and then gave up his own life in 1628 at age nine after the Guru admonished him for acting against God's will. Built between 1778 and 1784, each story represents one year of Baba Atal Rai's life, and the tower is topped with a golden dome.
