About

Gurdwara Saragarhi Sahib, located near the main entrance to the Golden Temple, was built by the British in 1902 to honor the 21 soldiers of the 36th Sikhs who made a legendary last stand at the Battle of Saragarhi on September 12, 1897. Vastly outnumbered by an estimated 10,000 to 24,000 Afghan tribesmen, every soldier — led by Havildar Ishar Singh — fought to the death, and all were posthumously awarded the Indian Order of Merit. UNESCO has cited the battle as one of the five most significant last stands in world history, and the names of the fallen are engraved on marble inside the Gurdwara.
