ਬੇਦੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੈ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਪੰਡਤ ਕਾਮਾਮਨ ਕਾ ਮਾਠਾ ॥
bedh pukaarai mukh te pa(n)ddat kaamaaman kaa maaThaa ||
The Pandit, the religious scholar, proclaims the Vedas, but he is slow to act on them.
ਮੋਨੀ ਹੋਇ ਬੈਠਾ ਇਕਾਂਤੀ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਕਲਪਨ ਗਾਠਾ ॥
monee hoi baiThaa ikaa(n)tee hiradhai kalapan gaaThaa ||
Another person on silence sits alone, but his heart is tied in knots of desire.
ਹੋਇ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਤਜਿ ਚਲਿਓ ਛੁਟਕੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਾਠਾ ॥੧॥
hoi udhaasee girahu taj chalio chhuTakai naahee naaThaa ||1||
Another becomes an Udaasi, a renunciate; he abandons his home and walks out on his family, but his wandering impulses do not leave him. ||1||
ਜੀਅ ਕੀ ਕੈ ਪਹਿ ਬਾਤ ਕਹਾ ॥
jeea kee kai peh baat kahaa ||
Who can I tell about the state of my soul?
ਆਪਿ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਐਸੋ ਕਹਾ ਲਹਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aap mukat mo kau prabh mele aaiso kahaa lahaa ||1|| rahaau ||
Where can I find such a person who is liberated, and who can unite me with my God? ||1||Pause||
ਤਪਸੀ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਦੇਹੀ ਸਾਧੀ ਮਨੂਆ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਧਾਨਾ ॥
tapasee kar kai dhehee saadhee manooaa dheh dhis dhaanaa ||
Someone may practice intensive meditation, and discipline his body, but his mind still runs around in ten directions.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਚਾਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਚਜੁ ਕੀਨਾ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਭਇਆ ਗੁਮਾਨਾ ॥
brahamachaar brahamachaj keenaa hiradhai bhiaa gumaanaa ||
The celibate practices celibacy, but his heart is filled with pride.
ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿਓ ਉਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬਿਗਾਨਾ ॥੨॥
sa(n)niaasee hoi kai teerath bhramio us meh karodh bigaanaa ||2||
The Sannyaasi wanders around at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, but his mindless anger is still within him. ||2||
ਘੂੰਘਰ ਬਾਧਿ ਭਏ ਰਾਮਦਾਸਾ ਰੋਟੀਅਨ ਕੇ ਓਪਾਵਾ ॥
ghoo(n)ghar baadh bhe raamadhaasaa roTeean ke opaavaa ||
The temple dancers tie bells around their ankles to earn their living.
ਬਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਕਰਮ ਖਟ ਕੀਨੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭੇਖ ਦਿਖਾਵਾ ॥
barat nem karam khaT keene baahar bhekh dhikhaavaa ||
Others go on fasts, take vows, perform the six rituals and wear religious robes for show.
ਗੀਤ ਨਾਦ ਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਗ ਅਲਾਪੇ ਮਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਵਾ ॥੩॥
geet naadh mukh raag alaape man nahee har har gaavaa ||3||
Some sing songs and melodies and hymns, but their minds do not sing of the Lord, Har, Har. ||3||
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਰਹਤ ਹਹਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਤਾ ॥
harakh sog lobh moh rahat heh niramal har ke sa(n)taa ||
The Lord's Saints are immaculately pure; they are beyond pleasure and pain, beyond greed and attachment.
ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਧੂੜਿ ਪਾਏ ਮਨੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਜਾ ਦਇਆ ਕਰੇ ਭਗਵੰਤਾ ॥
tin kee dhooR paae man meraa jaa dhiaa kare bhagava(n)taa ||
My mind obtains the dust of their feet, when the Lord God shows mercy.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਤਰੀ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ॥੪॥
kahu naanak gur pooraa miliaa taa(n) utaree man kee chi(n)taa ||4||
Says Nanak, I met the Perfect Guru, and then the anxiety of my mind was removed. ||4||
ਮੇਰਾ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥
meraa a(n)tarajaamee har raiaa ||
My Sovereign Lord is the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts.
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਜੀਅ ਕਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਬਿਸਰਿ ਗਏ ਬਕਬਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੬॥੧੫॥
sabh kichh jaanai mere jeea kaa preetam bisar ge bakabaiaa ||1|| rahaau dhoojaa ||6||15||
The Beloved of my soul knows everything; all trivial talk is forgotten. ||1||Second Pause||6||15||

Maaroo, Fifth Mehla:
ਕੋਟਿ ਲਾਖ ਸਰਬ ਕੋ ਰਾਜਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ॥
koT laakh sarab ko raajaa jis hiradhai naam tumaaraa ||
One who has Your Name in his heart is the king of all the hundreds of thousands and millions of beings.
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਦੀਆ ਮੇਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸੇ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮਹਿ ਗਾਵਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
jaa kau naam na dheeaa merai satigur se mar janameh gaavaaraa ||1||
Those, whom my True Guru has not blessed with Your Name, are poor idiots, who die and are reborn. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹੀ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖੁ ॥
mere satigur hee pat raakh ||
My True Guru protects and preserves my honor.
ਚੀਤਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਪਤਿ ਪੂਰੀ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਰਲੀਐ ਖਾਕੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
cheet aaveh tab hee pat pooree bisarat raleeaai khaak ||1|| rahaau ||
When You come to mind, Lord, then I obtain perfect honor. Forgetting You, I roll in the dust. ||1||Pause||
ਰੂਪ ਰੰਗ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਮਨ ਭੋਗਣ ਤੇ ਤੇ ਛਿਦ੍ਰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ॥
roop ra(n)g khuseeaa man bhogan te te chhidhr vikaaraa ||
The mind's pleasures of love and beauty bring just as many blames and sins.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਕਲਿਆਣਾ ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜੁ ਇਹੁ ਸਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
har kaa naam nidhaan kaliaanaa sookh sahaj ih saaraa ||2||
The Name of the Lord is the treasure of Emancipation; it is absolute peace and poise. ||2||
ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗ ਬਿਰੰਗ ਖਿਨੈ ਮਹਿ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਦਰ ਕੀ ਛਾਇਆ ॥
maiaa ra(n)g bira(n)g khinai meh jiau baadhar kee chhaiaa ||
The pleasures of Maya fade away in an instant, like the shade of a passing cloud.
ਸੇ ਲਾਲ ਭਏ ਗੂੜੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
se laal bhe gooRai ra(n)g raate jin gur mil har har gaiaa ||3||
They alone are dyed in the deep crimson of the Lord's Love, who meet the Guru, and sing the Praises of the Lord, Har, Har. ||3||
ਊਚ ਮੂਚ ਅਪਾਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਅਗਮ ਦਰਬਾਰਾ ॥
uooch mooch apaar suaamee agam dharabaaraa ||
My Lord and Master is lofty and exalted, grand and infinite. The Darbaar of His Court is inaccessible.
ਨਾਮੋ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਸੋਭਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਖਸਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥੪॥੭॥੧੬॥
naamo vaddiaaiee sobhaa naanak khasam piaaraa ||4||7||16||
Through the Naam, glorious greatness and respect are obtained; O Nanak, my Lord and Master is my Beloved. ||4||7||16||

Maaroo, Fifth Mehla, Fourth House:
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ikOankaar satigur prasaadh ||
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਓਅੰਕਾਰਿ ਉਤਪਾਤੀ ॥
oa(n)kaar utapaatee ||
The One Universal Creator Lord created the creation.
ਕੀਆ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਸਭ ਰਾਤੀ ॥
keeaa dhinas sabh raatee ||
He made all the days and the nights.
ਵਣੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਣੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਪਾਣੀ ॥
van tiran tirabhavan paanee ||
The forests, meadows, three worlds, water,
ਚਾਰਿ ਬੇਦ ਚਾਰੇ ਖਾਣੀ ॥
chaar bedh chaare khaanee ||
the four Vedas, the four sources of creation,
ਖੰਡ ਦੀਪ ਸਭਿ ਲੋਆ ॥
kha(n)dd dheep sabh loaa ||
the countries, the continents and all the worlds,
ਏਕ ਕਵਾਵੈ ਤੇ ਸਭਿ ਹੋਆ ॥੧॥
ek kavaavai te sabh hoaa ||1||
have all come from the One Word of the Lord. ||1||
ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰਾ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਰੇ ॥
karanaihaaraa boojhahu re ||
Hey - understand the Creator Lord.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਸੂਝੈ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
satigur milai ta soojhai re ||1|| rahaau ||
If you meet the True Guru, then you'll understand. ||1||Pause||
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਕੀਆ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥
trai gun keeaa pasaaraa ||
He formed the expanse of the entire universe from the three gunas, the three qualities.
ਨਰਕ ਸੁਰਗ ਅਵਤਾਰਾ ॥
narak surag avataaraa ||
People are incarnated in heaven and in hell.
ਹਉਮੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥
haumai aavai jaiee ||
In egotism, they come and go.
ਮਨੁ ਟਿਕਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਰਾਈ ॥
man Tikan na paavai raiee ||
The mind cannot hold still, even for an instant.
