ਕਲਰ ਖੇਤੀ ਤਰਵਰ ਕੰਠੇ ਬਾਗਾ ਪਹਿਰਹਿ ਕਜਲੁ ਝਰੈ ॥

kalar khetee taravar ka(n)The baagaa pahireh kajal jharai ||

He is like the crop planted in the salty soil, or the tree growing on the river bank, or the white clothes sprinkled with dirt.

ਏਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਕੀ ਕੋਠੀ ਜੋ ਪੈਸੈ ਸੋ ਗਰਬਿ ਜਰੈ ॥੬॥

eh sa(n)saar tisai kee koThee jo paisai so garab jarai ||6||

This world is the house of desire; whoever enters it, is burnt down by egotistical pride. ||6||

ਰਯਤਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਕਹਾ ਸਬਾਏ ਦੁਹੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੋ ਜਾਸੀ ॥

rayat raaje kahaa sabaae dhuh a(n)tar so jaasee ||

Where are all the kings and their subjects? Those who are immersed in duality are destroyed.

ਕਹਤ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਚੇ ਕੀ ਪਉੜੀ ਰਹਸੀ ਅਲਖੁ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ॥੭॥੩॥੧੧॥

kahat naanak gur sache kee pauRee rahasee alakh nivaasee ||7||3||11||

Says Nanak, these are the steps of the ladder, of the Teachings of the True Guru; only the Unseen Lord shall remain. ||7||3||11||

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ਘਰੁ ੫ ਅਸਟਪਦੀ

maaroo mahalaa teejaa ghar panjavaa asaTapadhee

Maaroo, Third Mehla, Fifth House, Ashtpadheeyaa:

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ikOankaar satigur prasaadh ||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥

jis no prem ma(n)n vasaae ||

One whose mind is filled with the Lord's Love,

ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥

saachai sabadh sahaj subhaae ||

is intuitively exalted by the True Word of the Shabad.

ਏਹਾ ਵੇਦਨ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਕਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਕਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥

ehaa vedhan soiee jaanai avar k jaanai kaaree jeeau ||1||

He alone knows the pain of this love; what does anyone else know about its cure? ||1||

ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲੇ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥

aape mele aap milaae ||

He Himself unites in His Union.

ਆਪਣਾ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਆਪੇ ਲਾਏ ॥

aapanaa piaar aape laae ||

He Himself inspires us with His Love.

ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

prem kee saar soiee jaanai jis no nadhar tumaaree jeeau ||1|| rahaau ||

He alone appreciates the value of Your Love, upon whom You shower Your Grace, O Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਦਿਬ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਜਾਗੈ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥

dhib dhirasaT jaagai bharam chukaae ||

One whose spiritual vision is awakened - his doubt is driven out.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਏ ॥

gur parasaadh param padh paae ||

By Guru's Grace, he obtains the supreme status.

ਸੋ ਜੋਗੀ ਇਹ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

so jogee ieh jugat pachhaanai gur kai sabadh beechaaree jeeau ||2||

He alone is a Yogi, who understands this way, and contemplates the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||2||

ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਧਨ ਪਿਰ ਮੇਲਾ ਹੋਵੈ ॥

sa(n)jogee dhan pir melaa hovai ||

By good destiny, the soul-bride is united with her Husband Lord.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਖੋਵੈ ॥

gurmat vichahu dhuramat khovai ||

Following the Guru's Teachings, she eradicates her evil-mindedness from within.

ਰੰਗ ਸਿਉ ਨਿਤ ਰਲੀਆ ਮਾਣੈ ਅਪਣੇ ਕੰਤ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

ra(n)g siau nit raleeaa maanai apane ka(n)t piaaree jeeau ||3||

With love, she continually enjoys pleasure with Him; she becomes the beloved of her Husband Lord. ||3||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਵੈਦੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥

satigur baajhahu vaidh na koiee ||

Other than the True Guru, there is no physician.

ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਸੋਈ ॥

aape aap nira(n)jan soiee ||

He Himself is the Immaculate Lord.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਮਰੈ ਮੰਦਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਗਿਆਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥

satigur miliaai marai ma(n)dhaa hovai giaan beechaaree jeeau ||4||

Meeting with the True Guru, evil is conquered, and spiritual wisdom is contemplated. ||4||

ਏਹੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਲਾਏ ॥

eh sabadh saar jis no laae ||

One who is committed to this most sublime Shabad

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਗਵਾਏ ॥

gurmukh tirasanaa bhukh gavaae ||

becomes Gurmukh, and is rid of thirst and hunger.

ਆਪਣ ਲੀਆ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਲ ਧਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੫॥

aapan leeaa kichhoo na paieeaai kar kirapaa kal dhaaree jeeau ||5||

By one's own efforts, nothing can be accomplished; the Lord, in His Mercy, bestows power. ||5||

ਅਗਮ ਨਿਗਮੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥

agam nigam satiguroo dhikhaiaa ||

The True Guru has revealed the essence of the Shaastras and the Vedas.

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਅਪਨੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥

kar kirapaa apanai ghar aaiaa ||

In His Mercy, He has come into the home of my self.

ਅੰਜਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਜਾਤਾ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੬॥

a(n)jan maeh nira(n)jan jaataa jin kau nadhar tumaaree jeeau ||6||

In the midst of Maya, the Immaculate Lord is known, by those upon whom You bestow Your Grace. ||6||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋ ਤਤੁ ਪਾਏ ॥

gurmukh hovai so tat paae ||

One who becomes Gurmukh, obtains the essence of reality;

ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥

aapanaa aap vichahu gavaae ||

he eradictes his self-conceit from within.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਧੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਮਨਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੭॥

satigur baajhahu sabh dha(n)dh kamaavai vekhahu man veechaaree jeeau ||7||

Without the True Guru, all are entangled in worldly affairs; consider this in your mind, and see. ||7||

ਇਕਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥

eik bhram bhoole fireh aha(n)kaaree ||

Some are deluded by doubt; they strut around egotistically.

ਇਕਨਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੀ ॥

eikanaa gurmukh haumai maaree ||

Some, as Gurmukh, subdue their egotism.

ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਹੋਰਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲੇ ਗਾਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੮॥

sachai sabadh rate bairaagee hor bharam bhule gaavaaree jeeau ||8||

Attuned to the True Word of the Shabad, they remain detached from the world. The other ignorant fools wander, confused and deluded by doubt. ||8||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

gurmukh jinee naam na paiaa ||

Those who have not become Gurmukh, and who have not found the Naam, the Name of the Lord

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥

manmukh birathaa janam gavaiaa ||

those self-willed manmukhs waste their lives uselessly.

ਅਗੈ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਬੇਲੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਬੂਝੈ ਗੁਰ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੯॥

agai vin naavai ko belee naahee boojhai gur beechaaree jeeau ||9||

In the world hereafter, nothing except the Name will be of any assistance; this is understood by contemplating the Guru. ||9||

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥

a(n)mirat naam sadhaa sukhadhaataa ||

The Ambrosial Naam is the Giver of peace forever.

ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਜਾਤਾ ॥

gur poorai jug chaare jaataa ||

Throughout the four ages, it is known through the Perfect Guru.

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਪਾਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੧੦॥੧॥

jis too dheveh soiee paae naanak tat beechaaree jeeau ||10||1||

He alone receives it, unto whom You bestow it; this is the essence of reality which Nanak has realized. ||10||1||
