ਹਮ ਦਾਸਨ ਕੇ ਦਾਸ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
ham dhaasan ke dhaas piaare ||
I am the slave of Your slaves, O my Beloved.
ਸਾਧਿਕ ਸਾਚ ਭਲੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
saadhik saach bhale veechaare ||
The seekers of Truth and goodness contemplate You.
ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਉ ਸੋਈ ਜਿਣਿ ਜਾਸੀ ਆਪੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੦॥
ma(n)ne naau soiee jin jaasee aape saach dhiraRaidhaa ||10||
Whoever believes in the Name, wins; He Himself implants Truth within. ||10||
ਪਲੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਚੇ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ॥
palai saach sache sachiaaraa ||
The Truest of the True has the Truth is His lap.
ਸਾਚੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
saache bhaavai sabadh piaaraa ||
The True Lord is pleased with those who love the Shabad.
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਲਾ ਧਰਿ ਥਾਪੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਹੀ ਪਤੀਆਇਦਾ ॥੧੧॥
tirabhavan saach kalaa dhar thaapee saache hee pateeaaidhaa ||11||
Exerting His power, the Lord has established Truth throughout the three worlds; with Truth He is pleased. ||11||
ਵਡਾ ਵਡਾ ਆਖੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥
vaddaa vaddaa aakhai sabh koiee ||
Everyone calls Him the greatest of the great.
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੋਝੀ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
gur bin sojhee kinai na hoiee ||
Without the Guru, no one understands Him.
ਸਾਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੋ ਸਾਚੇ ਭਾਏ ਨਾ ਵੀਛੁੜਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੨॥
saach milai so saache bhaae naa veechhuR dhukh paidhaa ||12||
The True Lord is pleased with those who merge in Truth; they are not separated again, and they do not suffer. ||12||
ਧੁਰਹੁ ਵਿਛੁੰਨੇ ਧਾਹੀ ਰੁੰਨੇ ॥
dhurahu vichhu(n)ne dhaahee ru(n)ne ||
Separated from the Primal Lord, they loudly weep and wail.
ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮਹਿ ਮੁਹਲਤਿ ਪੁੰਨੇ ॥
mar mar janameh muhalat pu(n)ne ||
They die and die, only to be reborn, when their time has passed.
ਜਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਮੇਲਿ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੩॥
jis bakhase tis dhe vaddiaaiee mel na pachhotaidhaa ||13||
He blesses those whom He forgives with glorious greatness; united with Him, they do not regret or repent. ||13 |
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਭੁਗਤਾ ॥
aape karataa aape bhugataa ||
| He Himself is the Creator, and He Himself is the Enjoyer.
ਆਪੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਮੁਕਤਾ ॥
aape tirapataa aape mukataa ||
He Himself is satisfied, and He Himself is liberated.
ਆਪੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਮੁਕਤੀਸਰੁ ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥
aape mukat dhaan mukateesar mamataa moh chukaidhaa ||14||
The Lord of liberation Himself grants liberation; He eradicates possessiveness and attachment. ||14||
ਦਾਨਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
dhaanaa kai sir dhaan veechaaraa ||
I consider Your gifts to be the most wonderful gifts.
ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
karan kaaran samarath apaaraa ||
You are the Cause of causes, Almighty Infinite Lord.
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਪਣਾ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੫॥
kar kar vekhai keetaa apanaa karanee kaar karaidhaa ||15||
Creating the creation, You gaze upon what You have created; You cause all to do their deeds. ||15||
ਸੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਭਾਵਹਿ ॥
se gun gaaveh saache bhaaveh ||
They alone sing Your Glorious Praises, who are pleasing to You, O True Lord.
ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਉਪਜਹਿ ਤੁਝ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਵਹਿ ॥
tujh te upajeh tujh maeh samaaveh ||
They issue forth from You, and merge again into You.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੬॥੨॥੧੪॥
naanak saach kahai bena(n)tee mil saache sukh paidhaa ||16||2||14||
Nanak offers this true prayer; meeting with the True Lord, peace is obtained. ||16||2||14||
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
maaroo mahalaa pehilaa ||
Maaroo, First Mehla:
ਅਰਬਦ ਨਰਬਦ ਧੁੰਧੂਕਾਰਾ ॥
arabadh narabadh dhu(n)dhookaaraa ||
For endless eons, there was only utter darkness.
ਧਰਣਿ ਨ ਗਗਨਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
dharan na gaganaa hukam apaaraa ||
There was no earth or sky; there was only the infinite Command of His Hukam.
ਨਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਨ ਚੰਦੁ ਨ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਲਗਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥
naa dhin rain na cha(n)dh na sooraj su(n)n samaadh lagaidhaa ||1||
There was no day or night, no moon or sun; God sat in primal, profound Samaadhi. ||1||
ਖਾਣੀ ਨ ਬਾਣੀ ਪਉਣ ਨ ਪਾਣੀ ॥
khaanee na baanee paun na paanee ||
There were no sources of creation or powers of speech, no air or water.
ਓਪਤਿ ਖਪਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੀ ॥
opat khapat na aavan jaanee ||
There was no creation or destruction, no coming or going.
ਖੰਡ ਪਤਾਲ ਸਪਤ ਨਹੀ ਸਾਗਰ ਨਦੀ ਨ ਨੀਰੁ ਵਹਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥
kha(n)dd pataal sapat nahee saagar nadhee na neer vahaidhaa ||2||
There were no continents, nether regions, seven seas, rivers or flowing water. ||2||
ਨਾ ਤਦਿ ਸੁਰਗੁ ਮਛੁ ਪਇਆਲਾ ॥
naa tadh surag machh piaalaa ||
There were no heavenly realms, earth or nether regions of the underworld.
ਦੋਜਕੁ ਭਿਸਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਖੈ ਕਾਲਾ ॥
dhojak bhisat nahee khai kaalaa ||
There was no heaven or hell, no death or time.
ਨਰਕੁ ਸੁਰਗੁ ਨਹੀ ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਆਇ ਨ ਜਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥
narak surag nahee ja(n)man maranaa naa ko aai na jaidhaa ||3||
There was no hell or heaven, no birth or death, no coming or going in reincarnation. ||3||
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
brahamaa bisan mahes na koiee ||
There was no Brahma, Vishnu or Shiva.
ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ॥
avar na dheesai eko soiee ||
No one was seen, except the One Lord.
ਨਾਰਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਜਨਮਾ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥
naar purakh nahee jaat na janamaa naa ko dhukh sukh paidhaa ||4||
There was no female or male, no social class or caste of birth; no one experienced pain or pleasure. ||4||
ਨਾ ਤਦਿ ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਬਨਵਾਸੀ ॥
naa tadh jatee satee banavaasee ||
There were no people of celibacy or charity; no one lived in the forests.
ਨਾ ਤਦਿ ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਸੁਖਵਾਸੀ ॥
naa tadh sidh saadhik sukhavaasee ||
There were no Siddhas or seekers, no one living in peace.
ਜੋਗੀ ਜੰਗਮ ਭੇਖੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਨਾਥੁ ਕਹਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥
jogee ja(n)gam bhekh na koiee naa ko naath kahaidhaa ||5||
There were no Yogis, no wandering pilgrims, no religious robes; no one called himself the master. ||5||
ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮ ਨਾ ਬ੍ਰਤ ਪੂਜਾ ॥
jap tap sa(n)jam naa brat poojaa ||
There was no chanting or meditation, no self-discipline, fasting or worship.
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਦੂਜਾ ॥
naa ko aakh vakhaanai dhoojaa ||
No one spoke or talked in duality.
ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਆਪੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੬॥
aape aap upai vigasai aape keemat paidhaa ||6||
He created Himself, and rejoiced; He evaluates Himself. ||6||
ਨਾ ਸੁਚਿ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਤੁਲਸੀ ਮਾਲਾ ॥
naa such sa(n)jam tulasee maalaa ||
There was no purification, no self-restraint, no malas of basil seeds.
ਗੋਪੀ ਕਾਨੁ ਨ ਗਊ ਗੋੁਆਲਾ ॥
gopee kaan na guoo guoaalaa ||
There were no Gopis, no Krishna, no cows or cowherds.
ਤੰਤੁ ਮੰਤੁ ਪਾਖੰਡੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਵੰਸੁ ਵਜਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥
ta(n)t ma(n)t paakha(n)dd na koiee naa ko va(n)s vajaidhaa ||7||
There were no tantras, no mantras and no hypocrisy; no one played the flute. ||7||
ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਾਖੀ ॥
karam dharam nahee maiaa maakhee ||
There was no karma, no Dharma, no buzzing fly of Maya.
ਜਾਤਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਦੀਸੈ ਆਖੀ ॥
jaat janam nahee dheesai aakhee ||
Social class and birth were not seen with any eyes.
ਮਮਤਾ ਜਾਲੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਥੈ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਕਿਸੈ ਧਿਆਇਦਾ ॥੮॥
mamataa jaal kaal nahee maathai naa ko kisai dhiaaidhaa ||8||
There was no noose of attachment, no death inscribed upon the forehead; no one meditated on anything. ||8||
ਨਿੰਦੁ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਨਹੀ ਜੀਉ ਨ ਜਿੰਦੋ ॥
ni(n)dh bi(n)dh nahee jeeau na ji(n)dho ||
There was no slander, no seed, no soul and no life.
ਨਾ ਤਦਿ ਗੋਰਖੁ ਨਾ ਮਾਛਿੰਦੋ ॥
naa tadh gorakh naa maachhi(n)dho ||
There was no Gorakh and no Maachhindra.
ਨਾ ਤਦਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਕੁਲ ਓਪਤਿ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਗਣਤ ਗਣਾਇਦਾ ॥੯॥
naa tadh giaan dhiaan kul opat naa ko ganat ganaidhaa ||9||
There was no spiritual wisdom or meditation, no ancestry or creation, no reckoning of accounts. ||9||
