ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
maaroo mahalaa teejaa ||
Maaroo, Third Mehla:
ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਿ ਆਕਾਰੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
nira(n)kaar aakaar upaiaa ||
The Formless Lord created the universe of form.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਬਣਾਇਆ ॥
maiaa moh hukam banaiaa ||
By the Hukam of His Command, He created attachment to Maya.
ਆਪੇ ਖੇਲ ਕਰੇ ਸਭਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੁਣਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥
aape khel kare sabh karataa sun saachaa ma(n)n vasaidhaa ||1||
The Creator Himself stages all the plays; hearing of the True Lord, enshrine Him in your mind. ||1||
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਾਈ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਪਰਸੂਤਿ ਜਮਾਇਆ ॥
maiaa maiee trai gun parasoot jamaiaa ||
Maya, the mother, gave birth to the three gunas, the three qualities,
ਚਾਰੇ ਬੇਦ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੇ ਨੋ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਆ ॥
chaare bedh brahame no furamaiaa ||
and proclaimed the four Vedas to Brahma.
ਵਰ੍ਹੇ ਮਾਹ ਵਾਰ ਥਿਤੀ ਕਰਿ ਇਸੁ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥
varhe maeh vaar thitee kar is jag meh sojhee paidhaa ||2||
Creating the years, months, days and dates, He infused intelligence into the world. ||2||
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰ ॥
gur sevaa te karanee saar ||
Service to the Guru is the most excellent action.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰ ॥
raam naam raakhahu ur dhaar ||
Enshrine the Lord's Name within your heart.
ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਵਰਤੀ ਜਗ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਇਸੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥
gurbaanee varatee jag a(n)tar is baanee te har naam paidhaa ||3||
The Word of the Guru's Bani prevails throughout the world; through this Bani, the Lord's Name is obtained. ||3||
ਵੇਦੁ ਪੜੈ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਵਾਦ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥
vedh paRai anadhin vaadh samaale ||
He reads the Vedas, but he starts arguments night and day.
ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤੈ ਬਧਾ ਜਮਕਾਲੇ ॥
naam na chetai badhaa jamakaale ||
He does not remember the Naam, the Name of the Lord; he is bound and gagged by the Messenger of Death.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥
dhoojai bhai sadhaa dhukh paae trai gun bharam bhulaidhaa ||4||
In the love of duality, he suffers in pain forever; he is deluded by doubt, and confused by the three gunas. ||4||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਏਕਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
gurmukh ekas siau liv laae ||
The Gurmukh is in love with the One Lord alone;
ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਮਨਸਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
tirabidh manasaa maneh samaae ||
he submerges in his mind the three-phased desire.
ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥
saachai sabadh sadhaa hai mukataa maiaa moh chukaidhaa ||5||
Through the True Word of the Shabad, he is liberated forever; he renounces emotional attachment to Maya. ||5||
ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਸੇ ਹੁਣਿ ਰਾਤੇ ॥
jo dhur raate se hun raate ||
Those who are so pre-ordained to be imbued, are imbued with love for the Lord.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਸਹਜੇ ਮਾਤੇ ॥
gur parasaadhee sahaje maate ||
By Guru's Grace, they are intuitively intoxicated.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਆਪੈ ਆਪੁ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੬॥
satigur sev sadhaa prabh paiaa aapai aap milaidhaa ||6||
Serving the True Guru forever, they find God; He Himself unites them with Himself. ||6||
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥
maiaa moh bharam na paae ||
In attachment to Maya and doubt, the Lord is not found.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਲਗਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
dhoojai bhai lagaa dhukh paae ||
Attached to the love of duality, one suffers in pain.
ਸੂਹਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਦਿਨ ਥੋੜੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਇਸੁ ਜਾਦੇ ਬਿਲਮ ਨ ਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥
soohaa ra(n)g dhin thoRe hovai is jaadhe bilam na laidhaa ||7||
The crimson color lasts for only a few days; all too soon, it fades away. ||7||
ਏਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਭੈ ਭਾਇ ਰੰਗਾਏ ॥
eh man bhai bhai ra(n)gaae ||
So color this mind in the Fear and the Love of God.
ਇਤੁ ਰੰਗਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
eit ra(n)g saache maeh samaae ||
Dyed in this color, one merges in the True Lord.
ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਕੋ ਇਹੁ ਰੰਗੁ ਪਾਏ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਰੰਗੁ ਚੜਾਇਦਾ ॥੮॥
poorai bhaag ko ih ra(n)g paae gurmatee ra(n)g chaRaidhaa ||8||
By perfect destiny, some may obtain this color. Through the Guru's Teachings, this color is applied. ||8||
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਕਰੇ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
manmukh bahut kare abhimaan ||
The self-willed manmukhs take great pride in themselves.
ਦਰਗਹ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
dharageh kab hee na paavai maan ||
In the Court of the Lord, they are never honored.
ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗੇ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੯॥
dhoojai laage janam gavaiaa bin boojhe dhukh paidhaa ||9||
Attached to duality, they waste their lives; without understanding, they suffer in pain. ||9||
ਮੇਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਆਪੁ ਲੁਕਾਇਆ ॥
merai prabh a(n)dhar aap lukaiaa ||
My God has hidden Himself deep within the self.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥
gur parasaadhee har milai milaiaa ||
By Guru's Grace, one is united in the Lord's Union.
ਸਚਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਚਾ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਮੋਲਕੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੦॥
sachaa prabh sachaa vaapaaraa naam amolak paidhaa ||10||
God is True, and True is His trade, through which the priceless Naam is obtained. ||10||
ਇਸੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
eis kaiaa kee keemat kinai na paiee ||
No one has found this body's value.
ਮੇਰੈ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਇਹ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ॥
merai Thaakur ieh banat banaiee ||
My Lord and Master has worked His handiwork.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਸੋਧੈ ਆਪਹਿ ਆਪੁ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੧॥
gurmukh hovai su kaiaa sodhai aapeh aap milaidhaa ||11||
One who becomes Gurmukh purifies his body, and then the Lord unites him with Himself. ||11||
ਕਾਇਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਤੋਟਾ ਕਾਇਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਲਾਹਾ ॥
kaiaa vich toTaa kaiaa vich laahaa ||
Within the body, one loses, and within the body, one wins.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਜੇ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ॥
gurmukh khoje veparavaahaa ||
The Gurmukh seeks the self-sustaining Lord.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਣਜਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੨॥
gurmukh vanaj sadhaa sukh paae sahaje sahaj milaidhaa ||12||
The Gurmukh trades, and finds peace forever; he intuitively merges in the Celestial Lord. ||12||
ਸਚਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਸਚੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥
sachaa mahal sache bha(n)ddaaraa ||
True is the Lord's Mansion, and True is His treasure.
ਆਪੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
aape dhevai dhevanahaaraa ||
The Great Giver Himself gives.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੇ ਸੁਖਦਾਤੇ ਮਨਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੩॥
gurmukh saalaahe sukhadhaate man mele keemat paidhaa ||13||
The Gurmukh praises the Giver of peace; his mind is united with the Lord, and he comes to know His worth. ||13||
ਕਾਇਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
kaiaa vich vasat keemat nahee paiee ||
Within the body is the object; its value cannot be estimated.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
gurmukh aape dhe vaddiaaiee ||
He Himself grants glorious greatness to the Gurmukh.
ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਹਟੁ ਸੋਈ ਵਥੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦੇਇ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥
jis dhaa haT soiee vath jaanai gurmukh dhei na pachhotaidhaa ||14||
He alone knows this object, to whom this store belongs; the Gurmukh is blessed with it, and does not come to regret. ||14||
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
har jeeau sabh meh rahiaa samaiee ||
The Dear Lord is pervading and permeating all.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਈ ॥
gur parasaadhee paiaa jaiee ||
By Guru's Grace, He is found.
ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਸਬਦੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੫॥
aape mel milaae aape sabadhe sahaj samaidhaa ||15||
He Himself unites in His Union; through the Word of the Shabad, one intuitively merges with Him. ||15||
