ਕੀਰਤਨੰ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੇਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਹ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੰਤਿ ਜਮਦੂਤਨਹ ॥੩੪॥
keeratana(n) saadhasa(n)gen naanak neh dhirasaTa(n)t jamadhootaneh ||34||
and sings the Kirtan of His Praises in the Saadh Sangat, O Nanak, shall never see the Messenger of Death. ||34||
ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਧਨੰ ਰੂਪੰ ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਸ੍ਵਰਗ ਰਾਜਨਹ ॥
nach dhuralabha(n) dhana(n) roopa(n) nach dhuralabha(n) savairag raajaneh ||
Wealth and beauty are not so difficult to obtain. Paradise and royal power are not so difficult to obtain.
ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਭੋਜਨੰ ਬਿੰਜਨੰ ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਸ੍ਵਛ ਅੰਬਰਹ ॥
nach dhuralabha(n) bhojana(n) bi(n)jana(n) nach dhuralabha(n) savaichh a(n)bareh ||
Foods and delicacies are not so difficult to obtain. Elegant clothes are not so difficuilt to obtain.
ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਸੁਤ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਬਾਂਧਵ ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਲਾਸਹ ॥
nach dhuralabha(n) sut mitr bhraat baa(n)dhav nach dhuralabha(n) banitaa bilaaseh ||
Children, friends, siblings and relatives are not so difficult to obtain. The pleasures of woman are not so difficult to obtain.
ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਣੰ ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਚਤੁਰ ਚੰਚਲਹ ॥
nach dhuralabha(n) bidhiaa prabeena(n) nach dhuralabha(n) chatur cha(n)chaleh ||
Knowledge and wisdom are not so difficult to obtain. Cleverness and trickery are not so difficult to obtain.
ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਏਕ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਨਾਮਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਬਧੵਿੰ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੰ ॥੩੫॥
dhuralabha(n) ek bhagavaan naameh naanak labadhiye(n) saadhasa(n)g kirapaa prabha(n) ||35||
Only the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is difficult to obtain. O Nanak, it is only obtained by God's Grace, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||35||
ਜਤ ਕਤਹ ਤਤਹ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੰ ਸ੍ਵਰਗ ਮਰਤ ਪਯਾਲ ਲੋਕਹ ॥
jat kateh tateh dhirasaTa(n) savairag marat payaal lokeh ||
Wherever I look, I see the Lord, whether in this world, in paradise, or the nether regions of the underworld.
ਸਰਬਤ੍ਰ ਰਮਣੰ ਗੋਬਿੰਦਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਲੇਪ ਛੇਪ ਨ ਲਿਪੵਤੇ ॥੩੬॥
sarabatr ramana(n) gobi(n)dheh naanak lep chhep na lipayete ||36||
The Lord of the Universe is All-pervading everywhere. O Nanak, no blame or stain sticks to Him. ||36||
ਬਿਖਯਾ ਭਯੰਤਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੰ ਦ੍ਰੁਸਟਾਂ ਸਖਾ ਸ੍ਵਜਨਹ ॥
bikhayaa bhaya(n)t a(n)mrita(n) dhrusaTaa(n) sakhaa savaijaneh ||
Poison is transformed into nectar, and enemies into friends and companions.
ਦੁਖੰ ਭਯੰਤਿ ਸੁਖੵੰ ਭੈ ਭੀਤੰ ਤ ਨਿਰਭਯਹ ॥
dhukha(n) bhaya(n)t sukhaye(n) bhai bheeta(n) ta nirabhayeh ||
Pain is changed into pleasure, and the fearful become fearless.
ਥਾਨ ਬਿਹੂਨ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰਹ ॥੩੭॥
thaan bihoon bisraam naama(n) naanak kirapaal har har gureh ||37||
Those who have no home or place find their place of rest in the Naam, O Nanak, when the Guru, the Lord, becomes Merciful. ||37||
ਸਰਬ ਸੀਲ ਮਮੰ ਸੀਲੰ ਸਰਬ ਪਾਵਨ ਮਮ ਪਾਵਨਹ ॥
sarab seel mama(n) seela(n) sarab paavan mam paavaneh ||
He blesses all with humility; He has blessed me with humility as well. He purifies all, and He has purified me as well.
ਸਰਬ ਕਰਤਬ ਮਮੰ ਕਰਤਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਲੇਪ ਛੇਪ ਨ ਲਿਪੵਤੇ ॥੩੮॥
sarab karatab mama(n) karataa naanak lep chhep na lipayete ||38||
The Creator of all is the Creator of me as well. O Nanak, no blame or stain sticks to Him. ||38||
ਨਹ ਸੀਤਲੰ ਚੰਦ੍ਰ ਦੇਵਹ ਨਹ ਸੀਤਲੰ ਬਾਵਨ ਚੰਦਨਹ ॥
neh seetala(n) cha(n)dhr dheveh neh seetala(n) baavan cha(n)dhaneh ||
The moon-god is not cool and calm, nor is the white sandalwood tree.
ਨਹ ਸੀਤਲੰ ਸੀਤ ਰੁਤੇਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੀਤਲੰ ਸਾਧ ਸ੍ਵਜਨਹ ॥੩੯॥
neh seetala(n) seet ruten naanak seetala(n) saadh savaijaneh ||39||
The winter season is not cool; O Nanak, only the Holy friends, the Saints, are cool and calm. ||39||
ਮੰਤ੍ਰੰ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੰ ਧੵਾਨੰ ਸਰਬਤ੍ਰ ਪੂਰਨਹ ॥
ma(n)tra(n) raam raam naama(n) dhayeaana(n) sarabatr pooraneh ||
Through the Mantra of the Name of the Lord, Raam, Raam, one meditates on the All-pervading Lord.
ਗੵਾਨੰ ਸਮ ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖੰ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰਵੈਰਣਹ ॥
gayeaana(n) sam dhukh sukha(n) jugat niramal niravairaneh ||
Those who have the wisdom to look alike upon pleasure and pain, live the immaculate lifestyle, free of vengeance.
ਦਯਾਲੰ ਸਰਬਤ੍ਰ ਜੀਆ ਪੰਚ ਦੋਖ ਬਿਵਰਜਿਤਹ ॥
dhayaala(n) sarabatr jeeaa pa(n)ch dhokh bivarajiteh ||
They are kind to all beings; they have overpowered the five thieves.
ਭੋਜਨੰ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਕੀਰਤਨੰ ਅਲਪ ਮਾਯਾ ਜਲ ਕਮਲ ਰਹਤਹ ॥
bhojana(n) gopaal keeratana(n) alap maayaa jal kamal rahateh ||
They take the Kirtan of the Lord's Praise as their food; they remain untouched by Maya, like the lotus in the water.
ਉਪਦੇਸੰ ਸਮ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਤ੍ਰਹ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਵਨੀ ॥
aupadhesa(n) sam mitr satreh bhagava(n)t bhagat bhaavanee ||
They share the Teachings with friend and enemy alike; they love the devotional worship of God.
ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਨਹ ਸ੍ਰੋਤਿ ਸ੍ਰਵਣੰ ਆਪੁ ਤੵਿਾਗਿ ਸਗਲ ਰੇਣੁਕਹ ॥
par ni(n)dhaa neh srot sravana(n) aap tiyeaag sagal renukeh ||
They do not listen to slander; renouncing self-conceit, they become the dust of all.
ਖਟ ਲਖੵਣ ਪੂਰਨੰ ਪੁਰਖਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਸਾਧ ਸ੍ਵਜਨਹ ॥੪੦॥
khaT lakhayen poorana(n) purakheh naanak naam saadh savaijaneh ||40||
Whoever has these six qualities, O Nanak, is called a Holy friend. ||40||
ਅਜਾ ਭੋਗੰਤ ਕੰਦ ਮੂਲੰ ਬਸੰਤੇ ਸਮੀਪਿ ਕੇਹਰਹ ॥
ajaa bhoga(n)t ka(n)dh moola(n) basa(n)te sameep kehareh ||
The goat enjoys eating fruits and roots, but if it lives near a tiger, it is always anxious.
ਤਤ੍ਰ ਗਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਗ ਹਰਖੰ ਬਿਆਪਤੇ ॥੪੧॥
tatr gate sa(n)saareh naanak sog harakha(n) biaapate ||41||
This is the condition of the world, O Nanak; it is afflicted by pleasure and pain. ||41||
ਛਲੰ ਛਿਦ੍ਰੰ ਕੋਟਿ ਬਿਘਨੰ ਅਪਰਾਧੰ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਮਲੰ ॥
chhala(n) chhidhra(n) koT bighana(n) aparaadha(n) kilabikh mala(n) ||
Fraud, false accusations, millions of diseases, sins and the filthy residues of evil mistakes;
ਭਰਮ ਮੋਹੰ ਮਾਨ ਅਪਮਾਨੰ ਮਦੰ ਮਾਯਾ ਬਿਆਪਿਤੰ ॥
bharam moha(n) maan apamaana(n) madha(n) maayaa biaapita(n) ||
doubt, emotional attachment, pride, dishonor and intoxication with Maya
ਮ੍ਰਿਤੵੁ ਜਨਮ ਭ੍ਰਮੰਤਿ ਨਰਕਹ ਅਨਿਕ ਉਪਾਵੰ ਨ ਸਿਧੵਤੇ ॥
mritaye janam bhrama(n)t narakeh anik upaava(n) na sidhayete ||
these lead mortals to death and rebirth, wandering lost in hell. In spite of all sorts of efforts, salvation is not found.
ਨਿਰਮਲੰ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਹ ਜਪੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਨਾਮੰ ॥
niramala(n) saadh sa(n)geh japa(n)t naanak gopaal naama(n) ||
Chanting and meditating on the Name of the Lord in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, O Nanak, mortals become immaculate and pure.
ਰਮੰਤਿ ਗੁਣ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਤਹ ॥੪੨॥
rama(n)t gun gobi(n)dh nit prateh ||42||
They continually dwell upon the Glorious Praises of God. ||42||
ਤਰਣ ਸਰਣ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਰਮਣ ਸੀਲ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰਹ ॥
taran saran suaamee raman seel paramesureh ||
In the Sanctuary of the Kind-hearted Lord, our Transcendent Lord and Master, we are carried across.
ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥਹ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪੂਰਨਹ ॥
karan kaaran samaratheh dhaan dhet prabh pooraneh ||
God is the Perfect, All-powerful Cause of causes; He is the Giver of gifts.
ਨਿਰਾਸ ਆਸ ਕਰਣੰ ਸਗਲ ਅਰਥ ਆਲਯਹ ॥
niraas aas karana(n) sagal arath aalayeh ||
He gives hope to the hopeless. He is the Source of all riches.
ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਸਿਮਰੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਗਲ ਜਾਚੰਤ ਜਾਚਿਕਹ ॥੪੩॥
gun nidhaan simara(n)t naanak sagal jaacha(n)t jaachikeh ||43||
Nanak meditates in remembrance on the Treasure of Virtue; we are all beggars, begging at His Door. ||43||
ਦੁਰਗਮ ਸਥਾਨ ਸੁਗਮੰ ਮਹਾ ਦੂਖ ਸਰਬ ਸੂਖਣਹ ॥
dhuragam sathaan sugama(n) mahaa dhookh sarab sookhaneh ||
The most difficult place becomes easy, and the worst pain turns into pleasure.
ਦੁਰਬਚਨ ਭੇਦ ਭਰਮੰ ਸਾਕਤ ਪਿਸਨੰ ਤ ਸੁਰਜਨਹ ॥
dhurabachan bhedh bharama(n) saakat pisana(n) ta surajaneh ||
Evil words, differences and doubts are obliterated, and even faithless cynics and malicious gossips become good people.
ਅਸਥਿਤੰ ਸੋਗ ਹਰਖੰ ਭੈ ਖੀਣੰ ਤ ਨਿਰਭਵਹ ॥
asathita(n) sog harakha(n) bhai kheena(n) ta nirabhaveh ||
They become steady and stable, whether happy or sad; their fears are taken away, and they are fearless.
