ਜਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਰਾਫੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਸੁਆਵਗੀਰ ਸਭਿ ਉਘੜਿ ਆਏ ॥
jaa satigur saraaf nadhar kar dhekhai suaavageer sabh ughaR aae ||
When the True Guru, the Tester, observes with His Glance, the selfish ones are all exposed.

ਓਇ ਜੇਹਾ ਚਿਤਵਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਤੇਹਾ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਓਇ ਤੇਹੋ ਜੇਹੇ ਦਯਿ ਵਜਾਏ ॥
oi jehaa chitaveh nit tehaa pain oi teho jehe dhay vajaae ||
As one thinks, so does he receive, and so does the Lord make him known.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦੁਹੀ ਸਿਰੀ ਖਸਮੁ ਆਪੇ ਵਰਤੈ ਨਿਤ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਚਲਤ ਸਬਾਏ ॥੧॥
naanak dhuhee siree khasam aape varatai nit kar kar dhekhai chalat sabaae ||1||
O Nanak, the Lord and Master is pervading at both ends; He continually acts, and beholds His own play. ||1||

Fourth Mehla:
ਇਕੁ ਮਨੁ ਇਕੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਗੈ ਸੋ ਥਾਇ ਪਾਇ ॥
eik man ik varatadhaa jit lagai so thai pai ||
The mortal is of one mind - whatever he dedicates it to, in that he is successful.
ਕੋਈ ਗਲਾ ਕਰੇ ਘਨੇਰੀਆ ਜਿ ਘਰਿ ਵਥੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਾਈ ਖਾਇ ॥
koiee galaa kare ghanereeaa j ghar vath hovai saiee khai ||
Some talk a lot, but they eat only that which is in their own homes.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਨ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
bin satigur sojhee naa pavai aha(n)kaar na vichahu jai ||
Without the True Guru, understanding is not obtained, and egotism does not depart from within.
ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀਆ ਨੋ ਦੁਖ ਭੁਖ ਹੈ ਹਥੁ ਤਡਹਿ ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮੰਗਾਇ ॥
aha(n)kaareeaa no dhukh bhukh hai hath taddeh ghar ghar ma(n)gai ||
Suffering and hunger cling to the egotistical people; they hold out their hands and beg from door to door.
ਕੂੜੁ ਠਗੀ ਗੁਝੀ ਨਾ ਰਹੈ ਮੁਲੰਮਾ ਪਾਜੁ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
kooR Thagee gujhee naa rahai mula(n)maa paaj leh jai ||
Their falsehood and fraud cannot remain concealed; their false appearances fall off in the end.
ਜਿਸੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਇ ॥
jis hovai poorab likhiaa tis satigur milai prabh aai ||
One who has such pre-ordained destiny comes to meet God through the True Guru.
ਜਿਉ ਲੋਹਾ ਪਾਰਸਿ ਭੇਟੀਐ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸੁਵਰਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਇ ॥
jiau lohaa paaras bheTeeaai mil sa(n)gat suvaran hoi jai ||
Just as iron is transmuted into gold by the touch of the Philosopher's Stone, so are people transformed by joining the Sangat, the Holy Congregation.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੂ ਧਣੀ ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਇ ॥੨॥
jan naanak ke prabh too dhanee jiau bhaavai tivai chalai ||2||
O God, You are the Master of servant Nanak; as it pleases You, You lead him. ||2||

Pauree:
ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
jin har hiradhai seviaa tin har aap milaae ||
One who serves the Lord with all his heart - the Lord Himself unites him with Himself.
ਗੁਣ ਕੀ ਸਾਝਿ ਤਿਨ ਸਿਉ ਕਰੀ ਸਭਿ ਅਵਗਣ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
gun kee saajh tin siau karee sabh avagan sabadh jalaae ||
He enters into a partnership with virtue and merit, and burns off all his demerits with the fire of the Shabad.
ਅਉਗਣ ਵਿਕਣਿ ਪਲਰੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਸੁ ਸਚੇ ਪਾਏ ॥
aaugan vikan palaree jis dheh su sache paae ||
Demerits are purchased cheap, like straw; he alone gathers merit, who is so blessed by the True Lord.
ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਅਉਗਣ ਮੇਟਿ ਗੁਣ ਪਰਗਟੀਆਏ ॥
balihaaree gur aapane jin aaugan meT gun paragaTeeaae ||
I am a sacrifice to my Guru, who has erased my demerits, and revealed my virtuous merits.
ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡੇ ਕੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਲਾਏ ॥੭॥
vaddee vaddiaaiee vadde kee gurmukh aalaae ||7||
The Gurmukh chants the glorious greatness of the great Lord God. ||7||
ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੪ ॥

Shalok, Fourth Mehla:
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਜੋ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥
satigur vich vaddee vaddiaaiee jo anadhin har har naam dhiaavai ||
Great is the greatness within the True Guru, who meditates night and day on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਮਤ ਸੁਚ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਹੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵੈ ॥
har har naam ramat such sa(n)jam har naame hee tirapataavai ||
The repetition of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, is his purity and self-restraint; with the Name of the Lord, He is satisfied.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਾਣੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੋ ਰਖ ਕਰਾਵੈ ॥
har naam taan har naam dheebaan har naamo rakh karaavai ||
The Lord's Name is His power, and the Lord's Name is His Royal Court; the Lord's Name protects Him.
ਜੋ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ਪੂਜੇ ਗੁਰ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਸੋ ਮਨ ਇਛੇ ਫਲ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
jo chit lai pooje gur moorat so man ichhe fal paavai ||
One who centers his consciousness and worships the Guru, obtains the fruits of his mind's desires.
ਜੋ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਮਾਰ ਦਿਵਾਵੈ ॥
jo ni(n)dhaa kare satigur poore kee tis karataa maar dhivaavai ||
But one who slanders the Perfect True Guru, shall be killed and destroyed by the Creator.
ਫੇਰਿ ਓਹ ਵੇਲਾ ਓਸੁ ਹਥਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਓਹੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਬੀਜਿਆ ਆਪੇ ਖਾਵੈ ॥
fer oh velaa os hath na aavai oh aapanaa beejiaa aape khaavai ||
This opportunity shall not come into his hands again; he must eat what he himself has planted.
ਨਰਕਿ ਘੋਰਿ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਾਲੈ ਖੜਿਆ ਜਿਉ ਤਸਕਰੁ ਪਾਇ ਗਲਾਵੈ ॥
narak ghor muh kaalai khaRiaa jiau tasakar pai galaavai ||
He shall be taken to the most horrible hell, with his face blackened like a thief, and a noose around his neck.
ਫਿਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਣੀ ਪਵੈ ਤਾ ਉਬਰੈ ਜਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥
fir satigur kee saranee pavai taa ubarai jaa har har naam dhiaavai ||
But if he should again take to the Sanctuary of the True Guru, and meditate on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, then he shall be saved.
ਹਰਿ ਬਾਤਾ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਰਤੇ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
har baataa aakh sunaae naanak har karate evai bhaavai ||1||
Nanak speaks and proclaims the Lord's Story; as it pleases the Creator, so does he speak. ||1||

Fourth Mehla:
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਮੰਨੈ ਓਹੁ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਮੁਠਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
poore gur kaa hukam na ma(n)nai oh manmukh agiaan muThaa bikh maiaa ||
One who does not obey the Hukam, the Command of the Perfect Guru - that self-willed manmukh is plundered by his ignorance and poisoned by Maya.
ਓਸੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਕੂੜੋ ਕਰਿ ਬੁਝੈ ਅਣਹੋਦੇ ਝਗੜੇ ਦਯਿ ਓਸ ਦੈ ਗਲਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
os a(n)dhar kooR kooRo kar bujhai anahodhe jhagaRe dhay os dhai gal paiaa ||
Within him is falsehood, and he sees everyone else as false; the Lord has tied these useless conflicts around his neck.
ਓਹੁ ਗਲ ਫਰੋਸੀ ਕਰੇ ਬਹੁਤੇਰੀ ਓਸ ਦਾ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
oh gal farosee kare bahuteree os dhaa boliaa kisai na bhaiaa ||
He babbles on and on, but the words he speaks please no one.
ਓਹੁ ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਹੰਢੈ ਜਿਉ ਰੰਨ ਦੋੁਹਾਗਣਿ ਓਸੁ ਨਾਲਿ ਮੁਹੁ ਜੋੜੇ ਓਸੁ ਭੀ ਲਛਣੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
oh ghar ghar ha(n)ddai jiau ra(n)n dhuohaagan os naal muh joRe os bhee lachhan laiaa ||
He wanders from house to house like an abandoned woman; whoever associates with him is stained by the mark of evil as well.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਅਲਿਪਤੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਓਸ ਦਾ ਪਾਸੁ ਛਡਿ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਸਿ ਬਹਿ ਜਾਇਆ ॥
gurmukh hoi su alipato varatai os dhaa paas chhadd gur paas beh jaiaa ||
Those who become Gurmukh avoid him; they forsake his company and sit near the Guru.
