ਸਚਿਆਰ ਸਿਖ ਬਹਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਾਸਿ ਘਾਲਨਿ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਨ ਲਭਨੀ ਕਿਤੈ ਥਾਇ ਭਾਲੇ ॥
sachiaar sikh beh satigur paas ghaalan kooRiaar na labhanee kitai thai bhaale ||
The truthful Sikhs sit by the True Guru's side and serve Him. The false ones search, but find no place of rest.
ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਆਖਿਆ ਸੁਖਾਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਤਿਨਾ ਮੁਹ ਭਲੇਰੇ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਦਯਿ ਗਾਲੇ ॥
jinaa satigur kaa aakhiaa sukhaavai naahee tinaa muh bhalere fireh dhay gaale ||
Those who are not pleased with the Words of the True Guru - their faces are cursed, and they wander around, condemned by God.
ਜਿਨ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਕੇਰੀ ਸੇ ਕਿਚਰਕੁ ਵੇਰਾਈਅਨਿ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬੇਤਾਲੇ ॥
jin a(n)dhar preet nahee har keree se kicharak veraieean manmukh betaale ||
Those who do not have the Love of the Lord within their hearts - how long can those demonic, self-willed manmukhs be consoled?
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁ ਥਾਇ ਰਖੈ ਓਹੁ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਥੁ ਨਾਲੇ ॥
satigur no milai su aapanaa man thai rakhai oh aap varatai aapanee vath naale ||
One who meets the True Guru, keeps his mind in its own place; he spends only his own assets.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਕਨਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਇਕਿ ਆਪੇ ਵਖਿ ਕਢੈ ਠਗਵਾਲੇ ॥੧॥
jan naanak ikanaa gur mel sukh dhevai ik aape vakh kaddai Thagavaale ||1||
O servant Nanak, some are united with the Guru; to some, the Lord grants peace, while others - deceitful cheats - suffer in isolation. ||1||

Fourth Mehla:
ਜਿਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਕਾਜ ਦਯਿ ਆਦੇ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
jinaa a(n)dhar naam nidhaan har tin ke kaaj dhay aadhe raas ||
Those who have the treasure of the Lord's Name deep within their hearts - the Lord resolves their affairs.
ਤਿਨ ਚੂਕੀ ਮੁਹਤਾਜੀ ਲੋਕਨ ਕੀ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅੰਗੁ ਕਰਿ ਬੈਠਾ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
tin chookee muhataajee lokan kee har prabh a(n)g kar baiThaa paas ||
They are no longer subservient to other people; the Lord God sits by them, at their side.
ਜਾਂ ਕਰਤਾ ਵਲਿ ਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਵਲਿ ਸਭਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥
jaa(n) karataa val taa sabh ko val sabh dharasan dhekh kareh saabaas ||
When the Creator is on their side, then everyone is on their side. Beholding their vision, everyone applauds them.
ਸਾਹੁ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਕੀਆ ਸਭਿ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਆਇ ਕਰਹਿ ਰਹਰਾਸਿ ॥
saahu paatisaahu sabh har kaa keeaa sabh jan kau aai kareh raharaas ||
Kings and emperors are all created by the Lord; they all come and bow in reverence to the Lord's humble servant.
ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੀ ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹਰਿ ਵਡਾ ਸੇਵਿ ਅਤੁਲੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
gur poore kee vaddee vaddiaaiee har vaddaa sev atul sukh paiaa ||
Great is the greatness of the Perfect Guru. Serving the Great Lord, I have obtained immeasurable peace.
ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੀਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਨਿਤ ਬਖਸੇ ਚੜੈ ਸਵਾਇਆ ॥
gur poorai dhaan dheeaa har nihachal nit bakhase chaRai savaiaa ||
The Lord has bestowed this eternal gift upon the Perfect Guru; His blessings increase day by day.
ਕੋਈ ਨਿੰਦਕੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇਖਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਸੋ ਕਰਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਪਚਾਇਆ ॥
koiee ni(n)dhak vaddiaaiee dhekh na sakai so karatai aap pachaiaa ||
The slanderer, who cannot endure His greatness, is destroyed by the Creator Himself.
ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗੁਣ ਬੋਲੈ ਕਰਤੇ ਕੇ ਭਗਤਾ ਨੋ ਸਦਾ ਰਖਦਾ ਆਇਆ ॥੨॥
jan naanak gun bolai karate ke bhagataa no sadhaa rakhadhaa aaiaa ||2||
Servant Nanak chants the Glorious Praises of the Creator, who protects His devotees forever. ||2||

Pauree:
ਤੂ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਅਗਮ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਹੈ ਵਡ ਦਾਤਾ ਦਾਣਾ ॥
too saahib agam dhiaal hai vadd dhaataa dhaanaa ||
You, O Lord and Master, are inaccessible and merciful; You are the Great Giver, All-knowing.
ਤੁਧੁ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਮੈ ਹੋਰੁ ਕੋ ਦਿਸਿ ਨਾ ਆਵਈ ਤੂਹੈਂ ਸੁਘੜੁ ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣਾ ॥
tudh jevadd mai hor ko dhis naa aaviee toohai(n) sughaR merai man bhaanaa ||
I can see no other as great as You; O Lord of Wisdom, You are pleasing to my mind.
ਮੋਹੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਦਿਸਿ ਆਵਦਾ ਸਭੁ ਚਲਣਹਾਰਾ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ॥
moh kuTa(n)b dhis aavadhaa sabh chalanahaaraa aavan jaanaa ||
Emotional attachment to your family and everything you see is temporary, coming and going.
ਜੋ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਚੇ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਦੇ ਸੇ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਕੂੜਾ ਤਿਨ ਮਾਣਾ ॥
jo bin sache horat chit laidhe se kooRiaar kooRaa tin maanaa ||
Those who attach their consciousness to anything except the True Lord are false, and false is their pride.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਤੂ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਚੇ ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਜਾਣਾ ॥੧੦॥
naanak sach dhiaai too bin sache pach pach mue ajaanaa ||10||
O Nanak, meditate on the True Lord; without the True Lord, the ignorant rot away and putrefy to death. ||10||

Shalok, Fourth Mehla:
ਅਗੋ ਦੇ ਸਤ ਭਾਉ ਨ ਦਿਚੈ ਪਿਛੋ ਦੇ ਆਖਿਆ ਕੰਮਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
ago dhe sat bhaau na dhichai pichho dhe aakhiaa ka(n)m na aavai ||
At first, he did not show respect to the Guru; later, he offered excuses, but it is no use.
ਅਧ ਵਿਚਿ ਫਿਰੈ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਵੇਚਾਰਾ ਗਲੀ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
adh vich firai manmukh vechaaraa galee kiau sukh paavai ||
The wretched, self-willed manmukhs wander around and are stuck mid-way; how can they find peace by mere words?
ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੁ ਕੂੜੀ ਆਵੈ ਕੂੜੀ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
jis a(n)dhar preet nahee satigur kee su kooRee aavai kooRee jaavai ||
Those who have no love for the True Guru within their hearts come with falsehood, and leave with falsehood.
ਜੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਤਾਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਵੈ ॥
je kirapaa kare meraa har prabh karataa taa(n) satigur paarabraham nadharee aavai ||
When my Lord God, the Creator, grants His Grace, then they come to see the True Guru as the Supreme Lord God.
ਤਾ ਅਪਿਉ ਪੀਵੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੇਰਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਾੜਾ ਅੰਦੇਸਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥
taa apiau peevai sabadh gur keraa sabh kaaRaa a(n)dhesaa bharam chukaavai ||
Then, they drink in the Nectar, the Word of the Guru's Shabad; all burning, anxiety, and doubts are eliminated.
ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦਿ ਰਹੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
sadhaa ana(n)dh rahai dhin raatee jan naanak anadhin har gun gaavai ||1||
They remain in ecstasy forever, day and night; O servant Nanak, they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, night and day. ||1||

Fourth Mehla:
ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਜੋ ਸਿਖੁ ਅਖਾਏ ਸੁ ਭਲਕੇ ਉਠਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥
gur satigur kaa jo sikh akhaae su bhalake uTh har naam dhiaavai ||
One who calls himself a Sikh of the Guru, the True Guru, shall rise in the early morning hours and meditate on the Lord's Name.
ਉਦਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਭਲਕੇ ਪਰਭਾਤੀ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਕਰੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਰਿ ਨਾਵੈ ॥
audham kare bhalake parabhaatee isanaan kare a(n)mirat sar naavai ||
Upon arising early in the morning, he is to bathe, and cleanse himself in the pool of nectar.
ਉਪਦੇਸਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਜਾਪੈ ਸਭਿ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਪਾਪ ਦੋਖ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
aupadhes guroo har har jap jaapai sabh kilavikh paap dhokh leh jaavai ||
Following the Instructions of the Guru, he is to chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. All sins, misdeeds and negativity shall be erased.
ਫਿਰਿ ਚੜੈ ਦਿਵਸੁ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਗਾਵੈ ਬਹਦਿਆ ਉਠਦਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥
fir chaRai dhivas gurbaanee gaavai bahadhiaa uThadhiaa har naam dhiaavai ||
Then, at the rising of the sun, he is to sing Gurbani; whether sitting down or standing up, he is to meditate on the Lord's Name.
ਜੋ ਸਾਸਿ ਗਿਰਾਸਿ ਧਿਆਏ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੋ ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
jo saas giraas dhiaae meraa har har so gursikh guroo man bhaavai ||
One who meditates on my Lord, Har, Har, with every breath and every morsel of food - that GurSikh becomes pleasing to the Guru's Mind.
