ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥
jis no dhiaal hovai meraa suaamee tis gursikh guroo upadhes sunaavai ||
That person, unto whom my Lord and Master is kind and compassionate - upon that GurSikh, the Guru's Teachings are bestowed.
ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਧੂੜਿ ਮੰਗੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਕੀ ਜੋ ਆਪਿ ਜਪੈ ਅਵਰਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
jan naanak dhooR ma(n)gai tis gursikh kee jo aap japai avareh naam japaavai ||2||
Servant Nanak begs for the dust of the feet of that GurSikh, who himself chants the Naam, and inspires others to chant it. ||2||

Pauree:
ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਇਦੇ ਸੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਥੋੜੇ ॥
jo tudh sach dhiaaidhe se virale thoRe ||
Those who meditate on You, O True Lord - they are very rare.
ਜੋ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਇਕੁ ਅਰਾਧਦੇ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਖਾਹਿ ਅਸੰਖ ਕਰੋੜੇ ॥
jo man chit ik araadhadhe tin kee barakat khaeh asa(n)kh karoRe ||
Those who worship and adore the One Lord in their conscious minds - through their generosity, countless millions are fed.
ਤੁਧੁਨੋ ਸਭ ਧਿਆਇਦੀ ਸੇ ਥਾਇ ਪਏ ਜੋ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਲੋੜੇ ॥
tudhuno sabh dhiaaidhee se thai pe jo saahib loRe ||
All meditate on You, but they alone are accepted, who are pleasing to their Lord and Master.
ਜੋ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਖਾਦੇ ਪੈਨਦੇ ਸੇ ਮੁਏ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੇ ਕੋੜ੍ਹੇ ॥
jo bin satigur seve khaadhe painadhe se mue mar ja(n)me koRhe ||
Those who eat and dress without serving the True Guru die; after death, those wretched lepers are consigned to reincarnation.
ਓਇ ਹਾਜਰੁ ਮਿਠਾ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਵਿਸੁ ਕਢਹਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਘੋਲੇ ॥
oi haajar miThaa boladhe baahar vis kaddeh mukh ghole ||
In His Sublime Presence, they talk sweetly, but behind His back, they exude poison from their mouths.
ਮਨਿ ਖੋਟੇ ਦਯਿ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ॥੧੧॥
man khoTe dhay vichhoRe ||11||
The evil-minded are consigned to separation from the Lord. ||11||

Shalok, Fourth Mehla:
ਮਲੁ ਜੂਈ ਭਰਿਆ ਨੀਲਾ ਕਾਲਾ ਖਿਧੋਲੜਾ ਤਿਨਿ ਵੇਮੁਖਿ ਵੇਮੁਖੈ ਨੋ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
mal jooiee bhariaa neelaa kaalaa khidholaRaa tin vemukh vemukhai no paiaa ||
The faithless baymukh sent out his faithless servant, wearing a blue-black coat, filled with filth and vermin.
ਪਾਸਿ ਨ ਦੇਈ ਕੋਈ ਬਹਣਿ ਜਗਤ ਮਹਿ ਗੂਹ ਪੜਿ ਸਗਵੀ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਇ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਆਇਆ ॥
paas na dheiee koiee bahan jagat meh gooh paR sagavee mal lai manmukh aaiaa ||
No one in the world will sit near him; the self-willed manmukh fell into manure, and returned with even more filth covering him.
ਪਰਾਈ ਜੋ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਚੁਗਲੀ ਨੋ ਵੇਮੁਖੁ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਭੇਜਿਆ ਓਥੈ ਭੀ ਮੁਹੁ ਕਾਲਾ ਦੁਹਾ ਵੇਮੁਖਾ ਦਾ ਕਰਾਇਆ ॥
paraiee jo ni(n)dhaa chugalee no vemukh kar kai bhejiaa othai bhee muh kaalaa dhuhaa vemukhaa dhaa karaiaa ||
The faithless baymukh was sent to slander and back-bite others, but when he went there, the faces of both he and his faithless master were blackened instead.
ਤੜ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਸਭਤੁ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚਿ ਭਾਈ ਵੇਮੁਖੁ ਸਣੈ ਨਫਰੈ ਪਉਲੀ ਪਉਦੀ ਫਾਵਾ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਉਠਿ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
taR suniaa sabhat jagat vich bhaiee vemukh sanai nafarai paulee paudhee faavaa hoi kai uTh ghar aaiaa ||
It was immediately heard throughout the whole world, O Siblings of Destiny, that this faithless man, along with his servant, was kicked and beaten with shoes; in humiliation, they got up and returned to their homes.
ਅਗੈ ਸੰਗਤੀ ਕੁੜਮੀ ਵੇਮੁਖੁ ਰਲਣਾ ਨ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਵਹੁਟੀ ਭਤੀਜਂੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਣਿ ਘਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
agai sa(n)gatee kuRamee vemukh ralanaa na milai taa vahuTee bhateeja(n)ee fir aan ghar paiaa ||
The faithless baymukh was not allowed to mingle with others; his wife and niece then brought him home to lie down.
ਹਲਤੁ ਪਲਤੁ ਦੋਵੈ ਗਏ ਨਿਤ ਭੁਖਾ ਕੂਕੇ ਤਿਹਾਇਆ ॥
halat palat dhovai ge nit bhukhaa kooke tihaiaa ||
He has lost both this world and the next; he cries out continually, in hunger and thirst.
ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਨਿਆਉ ਸਚੁ ਬਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਇਆ ॥
dhan dhan suaamee karataa purakh hai jin niaau sach beh aap karaiaa ||
Blessed, blessed is the Creator, the Primal Being, our Lord and Master; He Himself sits and dispenses true justice.
ਜੋ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੀ ਸੋ ਸਾਚੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਪਚਾਇਆ ॥
jo ni(n)dhaa kare satigur poore kee so saachai maar pachaiaa ||
One who slanders the Perfect True Guru is punished and destroyed by the True Lord.
ਏਹੁ ਅਖਰੁ ਤਿਨਿ ਆਖਿਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਗਤੁ ਸਭੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
eh akhar tin aakhiaa jin jagat sabh upaiaa ||1||
This Word is spoken by the One who created the whole universe. ||1||

Fourth Mehla:
ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਨੰਗਾ ਭੁਖਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਫਰੁ ਕਿਥਹੁ ਰਜਿ ਖਾਏ ॥
saahib jis kaa na(n)gaa bhukhaa hovai tis dhaa nafar kithahu raj khaae ||
One who has a poor beggar for a master - how can he be well-fed?
ਜਿ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਵਥੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਨਫਰੈ ਹਥਿ ਆਵੈ ਅਣਹੋਦੀ ਕਿਥਹੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
j saahib kai ghar vath hovai su nafarai hath aavai anahodhee kithahu paae ||
If there is something in his master's house, he can get it; but how can he get what is not there?
ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗੀਐ ਸਾ ਸੇਵਾ ਅਉਖੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
jis dhee sevaa keetee fir lekhaa ma(n)geeaai saa sevaa aaukhee hoiee ||
Serving him, who will be called to answer for his account? That service is painful and useless.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਫਲ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗੈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥੨॥
naanak sevaa karahu har gur safal dharasan kee fir lekhaa ma(n)gai na koiee ||2||
O Nanak, serve the Guru, the Lord Incarnate; the Blessed Vision of His Darshan is profitable, and in the end, you shall not be called to account. ||2||

Pauree:
ਨਾਨਕ ਵੀਚਾਰਹਿ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਚਾਰਿ ਵੇਦ ਕਹੰਦੇ ॥
naanak veechaareh sa(n)t jan chaar vedh kaha(n)dhe ||
O Nanak, the Saints consider, and the four Vedas proclaim,
ਭਗਤ ਮੁਖੈ ਤੇ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਸੇ ਵਚਨ ਹੋਵੰਦੇ ॥
bhagat mukhai te boladhe se vachan hova(n)dhe ||
that whatever the Lord's devotees utter with their mouths, shall come to pass.
ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਪਹਾਰਾ ਜਾਪਦਾ ਸਭਿ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਣੰਦੇ ॥
pragaT pahaaraa jaapadhaa sabh lok suna(n)dhe ||
He is manifest in His cosmic workshop. All people hear of this.
ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਮੁਗਧ ਨਰ ਸੰਤ ਨਾਲਿ ਖਹੰਦੇ ॥
sukh na pain mugadh nar sa(n)t naal khaha(n)dhe ||
The stubborn men who fight with the Saints shall never find peace.
ਓਇ ਲੋਚਨਿ ਓਨਾ ਗੁਣੈ ਨੋ ਓਇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਸੜੰਦੇ ॥
oi lochan onaa gunai no oi aha(n)kaar saRa(n)dhe ||
The Saints seek to bless them with virtue, but they only burn in their egos.
ਓਇ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਹਿ ਜਾ ਭਾਗ ਧੁਰਿ ਮੰਦੇ ॥
oi vichaare kiaa kareh jaa bhaag dhur ma(n)dhe ||
What can those wretched ones do, since, from the very beginning, their destiny is cursed with evil.
ਜੋ ਮਾਰੇ ਤਿਨਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਿ ਸੇ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਸੰਦੇ ॥
jo maare tin paarabraham se kisai na sa(n)dhe ||
Those who are struck down by the Supreme Lord God are of no use to anyone.
ਵੈਰੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਿਰਵੈਰ ਨਾਲਿ ਧਰਮ ਨਿਆਇ ਪਚੰਦੇ ॥
vair kareh niravair naal dharam niaai pacha(n)dhe ||
Those who hate the One who has no hatred - according to the true justice of Dharma, they shall perish.
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਸੰਤਿ ਸਰਾਪਿਆ ਸੇ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਭਵੰਦੇ ॥
jo jo sa(n)t saraapiaa se fireh bhava(n)dhe ||
Those who are cursed by the Saints will continue wandering aimlessly.
ਪੇਡੁ ਮੁੰਢਾਹੂੰ ਕਟਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਡਾਲ ਸੁਕੰਦੇ ॥੧੨॥
pedd mu(n)ddaahoo(n) kaTiaa tis ddaal suka(n)dhe ||12||
When the tree is cut off at its roots, the branches wither and die. ||12||
