ਆਸ ਪਿਆਸੀ ਸੇਜੈ ਆਵਾ ॥

aas piaasee sejai aavaa ||

With hope and desire, I approach His Bed,

ਆਗੈ ਸਹ ਭਾਵਾ ਕਿ ਨ ਭਾਵਾ ॥੨॥

aagai seh bhaavaa k na bhaavaa ||2||

but I do not know whether He will be pleased with me or not. ||2||

ਕਿਆ ਜਾਨਾ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਗਾ ਰੀ ਮਾਈ ॥

kiaa jaanaa kiaa hoigaa ree maiee ||

How do I know what will happen to me, O my mother?

ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਰਹਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

har dharasan bin rahan na jaiee ||1|| rahaau ||

Without the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan, I cannot survive. ||1||Pause||

ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਨ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਤਿਸ ਨ ਬੁਝਾਨੀ ॥

prem na chaakhiaa meree tis na bujhaanee ||

I have not tasted His Love, and my thirst is not quenched.

ਗਇਆ ਸੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਧਨ ਪਛੁਤਾਨੀ ॥੩॥

giaa su joban dhan pachhutaanee ||3||

My beautiful youth has run away, and now I, the soul-bride, repent and regret. ||3||

ਅਜੈ ਸੁ ਜਾਗਉ ਆਸ ਪਿਆਸੀ ॥

ajai su jaagau aas piaasee ||

Even now, I am held by hope and desire.

ਭਈਲੇ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਰਹਉ ਨਿਰਾਸੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

bhieele udhaasee rahau niraasee ||1|| rahaau ||

I am depressed; I have no hope at all. ||1||Pause||

ਹਉਮੈ ਖੋਇ ਕਰੇ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥

haumai khoi kare seegaar ||

She overcomes her egotism, and adorns herself;

ਤਉ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਸੇਜੈ ਰਵੈ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥੪॥

tau kaaman sejai ravai bhataar ||4||

the Husband Lord now ravishes and enjoys the soul-bride on His Bed. ||4||

ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੰਤੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

tau naanak ka(n)tai man bhaavai ||

Then, O Nanak, the bride becomes pleasing to the Mind of her Husband Lord;

ਛੋਡਿ ਵਡਾਈ ਅਪਣੇ ਖਸਮ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥੨੬॥

chhodd vaddaiee apane khasam samaavai ||1|| rahaau ||26||

she sheds her self-conceit, and is absorbed in her Lord and Master. ||1||Pause||26||

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

aasaa mahalaa pehilaa ||

Aasaa, First Mehla:

ਪੇਵਕੜੈ ਧਨ ਖਰੀ ਇਆਣੀ ॥

pevakaRai dhan kharee iaanee ||

In this world of my father's house, I, the soul-bride, have been very childish;

ਤਿਸੁ ਸਹ ਕੀ ਮੈ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥੧॥

tis seh kee mai saar na jaanee ||1||

I did not realize the value of my Husband Lord. ||1||

ਸਹੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਏਕੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ ॥

sahu meraa ek dhoojaa nahee koiee ||

My Husband is the One; there is no other like Him.

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਮੇਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

nadhar kare melaavaa hoiee ||1|| rahaau ||

If He bestows His Glance of Grace, then I shall meet Him. ||1||Pause||

ਸਾਹੁਰੜੈ ਧਨ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ॥

saahuraRai dhan saach pachhaaniaa ||

In the next world of my in-law's house, I, the the soul-bride, shall realize Truth;

ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ਅਪਣਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥੨॥

sahaj subhai apanaa pir jaaniaa ||2||

I shall come to know the celestial peace of my Husband Lord. ||2||

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਐਸੀ ਮਤਿ ਆਵੈ ॥

gur parasaadhee aaisee mat aavai ||

By Guru's Grace, such wisdom comes to me,

ਤਾਂ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਕੰਤੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥੩॥

taa(n) kaaman ka(n)tai man bhaavai ||3||

so that the soul-bride becomes pleasing to the Mind of the Husband Lord. ||3||

ਕਹਤੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਭੈ ਭਾਵ ਕਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥

kahat naanak bhai bhaav kaa kare seegaar ||

Says Nanak, she who adorns herself with the Love and the Fear of God,

ਸਦ ਹੀ ਸੇਜੈ ਰਵੈ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੨੭॥

sadh hee sejai ravai bhataar ||4||27||

enjoys her Husband Lord forever on His Bed. ||4||27||

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

aasaa mahalaa pehilaa ||

Aasaa, First Mehla:

ਨ ਕਿਸ ਕਾ ਪੂਤੁ ਨ ਕਿਸ ਕੀ ਮਾਈ ॥

n kis kaa poot na kis kee maiee ||

No one is anyone else's son, and no one is anyone else's mother.

ਝੂਠੈ ਮੋਹਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ॥੧॥

jhooThai moh bharam bhulaiee ||1||

Through false attachments, people wander around in doubt. ||1||

ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਹਉ ਕੀਤਾ ਤੇਰਾ ॥

mere saahib hau keetaa teraa ||

O My Lord and Master, I am created by You.

ਜਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਹਿ ਜਪੀ ਨਾਉ ਤੇਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

jaa(n) too(n) dheh japee naau teraa ||1|| rahaau ||

If You give it to me, I will chant Your Name. ||1||Pause||

ਬਹੁਤੇ ਅਉਗਣ ਕੂਕੈ ਕੋਈ ॥

bahute aaugan kookai koiee ||

That person who is filled with all sorts of sins may pray at the Lord's Door,

ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਬਖਸੇ ਸੋਈ ॥੨॥

jaa tis bhaavai bakhase soiee ||2||

but he is forgiven only when the Lord so wills. ||2||

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥

gur parasaadhee dhuramat khoiee ||

By Guru's Grace, evil-mindedness is destroyed.

ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ॥੩॥

jeh dhekhaa teh eko soiee ||3||

Wherever I look, there I find the One Lord. ||3||

ਕਹਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਐਸੀ ਮਤਿ ਆਵੈ ॥

kahat naanak aaisee mat aavai ||

Says Nanak, if one comes to such an understanding,

ਤਾਂ ਕੋ ਸਚੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੪॥੨੮॥

taa(n) ko sache sach samaavai ||4||28||

then he is absorbed into the Truest of the True. ||4||28||

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਦੁਪਦੇ ॥

aasaa mahalaa pehilaa dhupadhe ||

Aasaa, First Mehla, Dho-Padhay:

ਤਿਤੁ ਸਰਵਰੜੈ ਭਈਲੇ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਾਵਕੁ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਕੀਆ ॥

tit saravaraRai bhieele nivaasaa paanee paavak tineh keeaa ||

In that pool of the world, the people have their homes; there, the Lord has created water and fire.

ਪੰਕਜੁ ਮੋਹ ਪਗੁ ਨਹੀ ਚਾਲੈ ਹਮ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਡੂਬੀਅਲੇ ॥੧॥

pa(n)kaj moh pag nahee chaalai ham dhekhaa teh ddoobeeale ||1||

In the mud of earthly attachment, their feet have become mired, and I have seen them drowning there. ||1||

ਮਨ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਸਿ ਮੂੜ ਮਨਾ ॥

man ek na chetas mooR manaa ||

O foolish people, why don't you remember the One Lord?

ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਲਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

har bisarat tere gun galiaa ||1|| rahaau ||

Forgetting the Lord, your virtues shall wither away. ||1||Pause||

ਨਾ ਹਉ ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਨਹੀ ਪੜਿਆ ਮੂਰਖ ਮੁਗਧਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਭਇਆ ॥

naa hau jatee satee nahee paRiaa moorakh mugadhaa janam bhiaa ||

I am not a celibate, nor am I truthful, nor a scholar; I was born foolish and ignorant.

ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨੑ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾ ਜਿਨੑ ਤੂੰ ਨਾਹੀ ਵੀਸਰਿਆ ॥੨॥੨੯॥

pranavat naanak tin(h) kee saranaa jin(h) too(n) naahee veesariaa ||2||29||

Prays Nanak, I seek the Sanctuary of those who do not forget You, Lord. ||2||29||

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

aasaa mahalaa pehilaa ||

Aasaa, First Mehla:

ਛਿਅ ਘਰ ਛਿਅ ਗੁਰ ਛਿਅ ਉਪਦੇਸ ॥

chhia ghar chhia gur chhia upadhes ||

There are six systems of philosophy, six teachers, and six doctrines;

ਗੁਰ ਗੁਰੁ ਏਕੋ ਵੇਸ ਅਨੇਕ ॥੧॥

gur gur eko ves anek ||1||

but the Teacher of teachers is the One Lord, who appears in so many forms. ||1||

ਜੈ ਘਰਿ ਕਰਤੇ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

jai ghar karate keerat hoi ||

That system, where the Praises of the Creator are sung

ਸੋ ਘਰੁ ਰਾਖੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਤੋਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

so ghar raakh vaddaiee toh ||1|| rahaau ||

- follow that system; in it rests greatness. ||1||Pause||

ਵਿਸੁਏ ਚਸਿਆ ਘੜੀਆ ਪਹਰਾ ਥਿਤੀ ਵਾਰੀ ਮਾਹੁ ਭਇਆ ॥ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਏਕੋ ਰੁਤਿ ਅਨੇਕ ॥

visue chasiaa ghaReeaa paharaa thitee vaaree maahu bhiaa || sooraj eko rut anek ||

As the seconds, minutes, hours, days, weekdays months and seasons all originate from the one sun,

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤੇ ਕੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਵੇਸ ॥੨॥੩੦॥

naanak karate ke kete ves ||2||30||

O Nanak, so do all forms originate from the One Creator. ||2||30||
